1 PURPOSE AND STEPS purpose To be more aware that managing your personal energy is just as important as managing your time. suggested steps 1. Schedule your monthly follow-up conversation with your team to share the observations/learning about Listening and then introduce Energy. 2. Read the CONCEPT OVERVIEW and share this and/or the video with your direct reports. 3. Prepare for the Energy conversation by preparing your story and reviewing the CONVERSATION GUIDE. 4. Before you engage your team check your own Mood Elevator - if your Mood Elevator isn t above the center line - utilize the express button on the Mood Elevator by thinking of some areas of your life (people, processes, experiences) you are grateful for. 1
2 CONCEPT OVERVIEW While human energy is subjective, it also is very powerful. Sometimes we feel we have plenty of energy to do what we need to do; other times, we feel short of energy both at work and after work. There are certain people around us that seem to increase our energy, while others seem to drain it. We all have been on teams or in environments where energy was absent, or very negative, and results were poor and/or extremely stressful. We have also experienced teams and environments with lots of positive, creative energy where results flowed easily. Positive energy isn t always high energy. While we need bursts of high energy, too much eventually wears us out. There is another type of positive energy that can be very productive. This energy is calmer, more reflective and we can be very resourceful and creative. We can focus our energy by practicing the 5Ps for excellent hand-offs: Patient/Project-Plan-Purpose-Problems-Precautions a demonstration of our Core Value of Excellence. Negative, non-productive energy can also be high or low. Worry and depression are examples of lower negative energy; anger and self-righteousness are examples of high negative energy. At work and outside of work, we each need to be more aware of our energy. A noted leadership and productivity expert contends that managing personal energy is more important than managing time. To manage our energy, we each need to find ways to better create positive energy in ourselves and share it with those we influence and care for. Since energy is a feeling, one tool we have to help notice our feelings/energy is the Mood Elevator. We encourage you to not only be more aware of your mood, but also to be more aware of the energy you experience related to your moods. 2
3 PREPARATION The elements of your Energy story should follow this sequence: 1. A time you tried to do something with a team/group that was experiencing high or low negative energy 2. What were the results like and how did it feel? 3. A time you did something with a team/group that was experiencing high/low positive energy 4. What were the results like and how did it feel? 5. How would the concept of energy be relevant to the 5 P s (Patient/Project, Plan, Purpose, Problems, Precautions)? 3
4 CONVERSATION GUIDE SHARING LISTENING 1. Say: Share with a fellow employee what you have observed/learned about the concept of Listening and its impact on your work environment since the last meeting. 2. Ask: Who would like to share an example with the larger team? 3. Ask: What have you observed/learned about Listening that will help you positively impact what you do every day? 4. Appreciation: Who have you seen Listening more attentively since our last discussion? 4
5 CONVERSATION GUIDE INTRODUCTION: ENERGY 1. Share your negative and positive energy examples. 2. Read: THE CONCEPT OVERVIEW Energy. 3. Say: Turn to a fellow employee and share an example of a time when you experienced working with a team/group with there was negative energy. Ask: How did it impact the results and the way the people involved felt about it? 4. Ask: What are some of the most common things that can drain our energy around here? Ask: What are some of the things we can do to conserve our energy? Ask: What boosts your energy? 5. Ask: How is the concept of energy relevant to the 5 P s (Patient/Project, Plan, Purpose, Problems, Precautions)? 6. Present the application assignment: Until our next meeting, be more aware of your own personal energy as well as your teams and see if you notice a connection between energy and the 5 Ps. Come prepared to our next meeting to share some examples that you ve observed. 7. Thank the team for participating. TO DO 1. Send a recognition to those noted above. 2. Share a success story that others would benefit from hearing with your Master Champion. 5
