1 CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHODOLOGY This chapter presents the research methodology that carries out the research object, research design, data collection and data analysis. 3.1 Research Object The object of this study is taken from Nicholas Spark s novel entitled A Walk to Remember and its Indonesian translation Kan Ku Kenang Selalu that was translated by Kathleen SW. The analysis is on the romantic idiomatic expressions, the classifications and strategies used in translating romantic idiomatic expressions. 3.2 Research Design According to Ary (2010), research design is the overall strategy that is chosen for carrying out the research which is typically classified into two broad categories: quantitative and qualitative research. Quantitative research deals with numerical data that is gathered by using objective measurement to answer questions or statement of problems. Nevertheless, qualitative research is used in gaining the understanding of social phenomenon such as the reasons, opinions, motivations and other perspectives of human. The research design which is applied in this study is qualitative. Qualitative is used because it is designed to get the information regarding the romantic idiomatic expressions, and describing the classification and strategies 17

2 used in translating the romantic idiomatic expressions used by Landon Carter in A Walk to Remember novel. Moreover, this study is considered as descriptive research. Based on Ary (2010), descriptive research is the research that asks questions about the nature, incidence, or distribution of variables. In addition, the data that will be analysed in this study are in the form of words and phrases that are used by Landon Carter in the novel. Therefore, this study is categorized into descriptive qualitative research since this study is going to be done by describing and elaborating the romantic idiomatic expressions used by Landon Carter in the novel entitled A Walk to Remember novel. 3.3 Data Collection Data collection is the process of gathering and measuring information on variable of interest, in an established systematic fashion that enables one to answer stated research questions, test hypothesis, and evaluate outcomes. The data collection comparises the technique, instrument and procedures employed in this study. They are stated as follows: Instrument and Technique Research instrument is a tool or requirement use in collecting the data. Method is away used in collecting the data (Arikunto as cited in Nafiah, 2013). The researcher uses research instrument and technique to obtain the data. Since 18

3 this study is includes in qualitative research, so the key instrument is researcher herself. To support the needed data, researcher also uses documentary as a technique. When the researcher collects the data through analysis the books, magazine, or document, so it is called as documentary technique. In this research, researcher uses documentary technique to collect the data about romantic idiomatic expressions used by Landon Carter in A Walk to Remember novel Procedure There are four steps to collect the data, namely: 1) Reading and understanding the whole content of English and Indonesian translation novels. 2) Finding and writing the whole idioms and meanings in the paper. 3) Selecting the romantic idiomatic expressions and checking in idiom dictionary. 4) Fixing the romantic idiomatic expressions by rechecking in both English and Indonesian translation novels. 3.4 Data Analysis The focus of this study is analysing the romantic idiomatic expressions used by Landon Carter in A Walk to Remember novel. It also focuses on the classification and strategies used in translating romantic idiomatic 19

4 expressions. The data obtained from the data source that are analysed in the following steps. 1. Identifying the romantic idiomatic expressions used by Landon carter in A Walk to Remember novel is shown in the following table. Romantic Idiomatic Expressions Used by Landon Carter in A Walk to Remember Novel No Text Idiom Translation Source This table is used to answer the question number one in chapter one. The text column stands for the words where the romantic idiomatic expressions are found. The idiom column represents to the romantic idiomatic expressions used by Landon Carter. The meaning column shows the meaning of romantic idiomatic expressions. Then, the source column represents the position of the data in the novel based on the chapter, page, paragraph, line and sentence. 20

5 2. Classifying the romantic idiomatic expressions into the classifications is explained in the table below. Romantic Idiomatic Expressions Used by Landon Carter in A Walk to Remember Novel No Idiom Classification This table is used to answer question number two in chapter one. The idiom column shows the romantic idiomatic expressions used by Landon Carter in A Walk to Remember Novel. Then, the classification column represents the classification of idiom based on Fillmore s theory. 3. Analysing the strategies used in translating romantic idiomatic expressions is shown in the next table. 6 This table is used to answer the question number three in chapter one. The ST column represents the data in SL which consists of romantic idiomatic expressions used by Landon Carter in the novel. The TT columns show the translation form which consists of romantic idiomatic expressions in TL which is Bahasa Indonesia. Then, source column is used for representing the position of the data in the novel based on the chapter, page, paragraph, line and sentence. 4. Drawing conclusion out of the process of data analysis. In drawing conclusion, researcher analyses the findings based on the tables. Each table represents its finding. The first table shows the total of romantic idiomatic expression used by Landon Carter in A Walk to Remember novel. The second table proves the most classification used, and the last table also shows the most strategy used by translator in translating the romantic idiomatic expressions. This chapter summarizes the descriptive qualitative that is used as a research design in this study. In line, the research object analysed in this study is the romantic idiomatic expressions used by Landon Carter in A Walk to Remember novel, and its Indonesian novel entitled Kan Ku Kenang Selalu. In collecting the data, researcher uses four steps that have been explained in the previous point, and in analysing the romantic idiomatic expressions, researcher also applies the tables to explain more detail. Moreover, the further chapter will explain the findings of this study. 22
