Module 2: Foundational Principles of Coaching Lesson 4 Teaching 1 The Presuppositions of Professional Coaching (Pt: 1) Program
Instructions This journal/workbook is an integral part of your learning experience. Eye to hand coordination, coupled with focused attention and active listening, accelerates and intensifies the learning process. Complete each section, be it text or graphical, and make notes on what you are observing. This record will provide an invaluable source of reference for you both now and in the future. The Presuppositions of Professional Coaching The presuppositions are so essential because they form the bedrock, the core foundations of a model of excellence from which Professional level coaching emerges. So what are presuppositions? They are that if acted out as if true allow us to get better results for ourselves and when working with other people. So the context is that the presuppositions may not be, but by adopting them as if they are, they allow us to get better. There are 16 presuppositions, and in this first teaching of 2 we ll be covering the first 8, with the final 8 in the second teaching segment 1. Everyone has a unique model of the world. Page 2
All of the external information that comes in through our 5 physical senses is,, and and _ by our conditioning. Every person walking this planet sees the world in a different way. The only guarantee is that no one has the same model of the world than you do. 2. Respect other people s model of the world. You do not have to with someone else s map of the world in order to it. The first step is recognizing it s a different model of the world, and then respecting it for what it actually is just another model of the world. No right, no wrong, just different. If we are going to influence someone to improve their results then we have to the model of the world they have now, and then assist them in it. 3. The map is not the territory. All of our experience of the world is within our own ; the only thing we can experience directly is our own internal representation. Page 3
We can t actually experience any given event as it is in. So the map that we are operating from, our internal representation, is not actually the, which is outside of us. 4. People are not their behavior. Not matter how someone is behaving, no matter how destructive and damaging the behaviour may be to them or to others, whatever the behavior is, it isn t the is. What we must do is accept the and work with them to change the, realizing that we can always the, who you truly are stays the same and will remain so forever. 5. The answer is always in the individual * Note, this presupposition is not in the video, please stop and read. Conventional education assumes that human beings are empty cups, requiring information and data to be poured into them in order to make them successful and effective. There is substantial and unquestionable evidence that supports the broader array of human intelligences, an inherent wisdom within us that Page 4
can, when unlocked through the right approach, be accessed and utilized to bring about powerful and life-changing insight. Coaching embraces all levels of human intelligence, underpinned by the presupposition that the answer is always within the individual. The person concerned may not be aware of it yet, they may not become aware of it in the coaching session itself, however the answer will be forthcoming. 6. The meaning of all is dependant upon the it appears in. The meaning we give to any is always dependant upon the in which the behaviour appears. If we change the context on the behaviour, the meaning on the behaviour changes. 7. All behavior has a intention. No matter how inappropriate the behaviour may be, not matter how destructive for the person involved or damaging for others, the intention, the highest-level intention behind the behaviour is always. The behaviour gets something for the person that they or. Page 5
If it s a problem behaviour that is being worked with, then the higherlevel positive intention is what is termed in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) as a. To enable someone to change the behaviour they need to find other ways of achieving the intention the current behaviour serves; otherwise they won t be able to change the behaviour. 8. The most important information about a person, right now, in the moment, is how that person is. The way a person is is much more important than what they are ; it is the that will tell you exactly what s going on for the participant. Always with the, not the words words are the most means of understanding what is happening with another person. Congratulations! You are at the end of the teaching! Take 10 minutes straight away to reflect, evaluate and record your learning points from this lesson. Notes: Page 6
