Historical and current theories will be discussed concerning various topics including: research methods, states of consciousness, learning, memory, intelligence, human development over the entire life span, personality, emotions, gender roles and psychological disorders and their treatments. Other topics will include: the human brain and the nervous system, sensation and perception, stress and social interactions. 1

A) Define psychology B) Describe various research methods of study/experiments in psychology C) Trace the history of psychology from its beginnings to current theories and practices D) dentify main structures of the human nervous system, their functions, and their impact upon behavior ) dentify the processes which allow human beings to sense and perceive information from their environments F) Discuss biological influences upon behavior G) dentify and differentiate between the types (levels) of consciousness H) Describe the stages of sleep and list possible sleep problems ) Discuss principles of learning, remembering, and forgetting J) Define intelligence and discuss various types thereof, and testing methods ) Describe types of human development and stages throughout the life cycle L) Define and give examples of types of motivation M) Discuss various emotions and their affects on individuals N) Differentiate between theories concerning emotions O) Compare/contrast the current theories of personality P) dentify gender roles, their origins and how they have changed through time Q) dentify stress, types of stressors, and coping methods R) dentify major symptoms (behavioral & cognitive) which define each category of psychological disorder S) dentify categories of psychological disturbances and their treatments T) dentify factors which influence an individual s thinking and/or behavior in social situations U) dentify factors which influence social interactions/situations 2
