2 Welcome Dear Applicant We are delighted to introduce you to a new training programme to enhance your surgical skills in cataract surgery. This Visiting Fellowship and Hands-on Training in Cataract Surgery is designed as a special hands-on training on cataract surgery that will be held at the L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) in Hyderabad, India. ESASO offers to young ophthalmologists the opportunitiy to practice their surgical skills at the LVPEI. The duration of this Visiting Fellowship and Hands-on Training in Cataract Surgery is four weeks. As Fellow you will be assigned to a tutor surgeon and will perform at least one cataract surgery daily. Expect a minimum of 24 surgeries in cataract with IOL implantation. 3 Visiting Fellowship and Hands-on Training in Cataract Surgery 3 Objective This post-graduate Visiting Fellowship and Hands-on Training in Cataract Surgery for young ophthalmologists is designed around a combination of practical and theoretical approaches. All Fellows will report their experience to the Head Office in Lugano on a weekly basis. A through quality management and continous programme improvement will secure expected outcome and value of the common initiative for the Fellows and their patients. 4 4 Daily Schedule A regular day is scheduled as follows: 7 am Academics 8 am Surgical case 9 am Post-operative round 10 am 3 pm Operating Room (OR) 3 pm Wetlabs (first and second week) 4.30 pm 5.30 pm Video (teaching videos and the recording of previous days surgery)

5 Visiting Fellowship and Hands-on Training in Cataract Surgery 5 Phacoemulsification Programme Details 1st Week Objectives 1. To become familiar with the surgical steps of phacoemulsification performed at L V Prasad Eye Institute by assisting faculty in surgery. 2. To understand the concept of phacoemulsification by performing practice surgery in wetlab on animal eyes supplied by the Institute. 3. To learn pre-operative work up and post-operative of the cataract patient. Assisting surgery The Fellow may request to assist the surgeons in the Operating Room (OR). It is recommended that the Fellow assists the Consultant in as many as possible cases to become familiar with different techniques. Practice surgery Will be performed in wetlab during the hours allotted (2 3 pm). The animal eyes may be obtained by contacting the education department An entry must be made in the register while borrowing the eyeball. While a set of surgical instruments are available in wetlabs, you are advised to bring a set of your own instruments. Please clean and replace the instruments after use.

6 6 Phacoemulsification Programme Details 2nd & 3rd Week Objectives 1. To perform phacoemulsification under supervision. 2. To continue assisting faculty in surgery to appreciate techniques and understand problems. Pre-operative and post-operative care The Fellow should accompany the Consultant (tutor) on pre-operative rounds to become familiar with pre-operative evaluation of the patients. Post-operative cases are seen at 8 am every day I OPD. The Fellow should actively participate in the post-operative care of the patient. The Fellow should see the post-operative cases of the Consultant he assisted the previous days. Supervised surgery The Fellow shall co-ordinate the scheduling of the cases with the Consultant. The Fellow will practice surgery at the wetlab to enhance surgical skills.

7 Visiting Fellowship and Hands-on Training in Cataract Surgery 7 4th Week Objectives 1. To become proficient in the management of the cataract by performing surgery independently. 2. To become proficient in the management of the patient by participating in the preo-perative and post-operative treatment of patients. Independent surgery During surgery Consultant will assist with advice. Any deviations from the surgical plan need to be discussed prior to execution. Refinement of surgical skills by taping all surgeries and reviewing each case subsequently. Outpatient care Review of surgical results, and modification of surgical techniques based on surgical results. Periodical review of patient records to assess personal progresses. Total of cataract surgery performed At the end of the 4 weeks (training), the Fellow has performed at least 24 surgery of phacoemulsification of cataract and IOL implantation as first surgeon.

8 8 Library & Video Material The Fellow is expected to familiarise with all the literature related to phacoemulsification available in the library during the first week of the training. It is strongly recommended that each Fellow spends as much time as possible in the library and goes through the literature video and audio tapes available on phacoemulsification. It is recommended to tape all surgeries and review them regularly.

10 10 General Information Admission Requirements Eligible candidates must be subscribed in the ESASO modular programme. Master of Medicine obtained from a recognised university within the concerned country. Specialisation degree in Ophthalmology obtained in accordance with current regulations. Have participated in at least one ESASO Module (preferential title is the Module of Cataract Surgery). Formal request to be admitted in the Visiting Fellowship and Hands-on Training in Cataract Surgery. The candidates will be selected according to the rank of evaluation of the ESASO Modules. Fee for Visiting Fellowship and Hands-on Training in Cataract Surgery The costs are as follows: USD 5,000 for 4 weeks of Visiting Fellowship and Hands-on Training in Cataract Surgery at LVPEI, Hyderabad, India. USD 300 for accommodation at the guest professor apartments on the LVPEI campus. USD 2/day for vegetarian Indian food at the campus canteen, comprehensive of breakfast, lunch and dinner. ESASO Grant ESASO will support each young ophthalmologist participating in the Fellowship programme with a grant (the budget is set yearly in advance).

11 Visiting Fellowship and Hands-on Training in Cataract Surgery 11 Obligations of the Fellow Here after are the obligations according to Indian regulartory and compliance guidelines for international education programmes. The Fellow must follow these requirements closely. The Fellow must have a valid international health insurance (accident and illness). The Fellow must have a valid international occupational hazard insurance. The Fellow must sign a declaration of total discharge of responsibility for ESASO and LVPEI.
