1 5 March 2018: How you can promote the Live Stronger for Longer movement in your community Please follow and print this reference guide that provides information and advice to help you promote the Live Stronger for Longer movement in your community. We are calling Live Stronger for Longer a movement, as it s about our combined and collective efforts to support our older people, their friends and family and help prevent falls and fractures. We all want to help older people stay independent and injury free. If you have any questions or queries about Live Stronger for Longer movement, brand, images or resources please contact the Falls team on preventfalls@acc.co.nz Promotional activity Live Stronger for Longer website Here s what you can do Go to the website There is a host of practical advice and information for our Older People, 65 years and older, their family and friends, and those who care for them - all available on the website. Including how to find out and where to book local community strength and balance classes in your area. Material examples Accessing Live Stronger for Longer images You can all access most of the Live Stronger for Longer images and logos to help you with your own promotions. It is a simple step by step process all you need to do is :- 1

2 and logo Go to You will need to Register (there is a link in the middle of the page or top right corner) Then anna.shanahan@acc.co.nz to let Anna know you have registered and that you want access to the Live Stronger for Longer images and logos Once you ve and requested the Live Stronger for Longer images and logos it can take up to 24 hours for approval Then you ll then get an so you can access and download your images and you re ready to use them. If you ve got any queries the Falls team: preventfalls@acc.co.nz Note: We will be adding more images of our older people exercising to our image library soon so bear with us. Live Stronger for Longer Brand Guidelines The Live Stronger for Longer Brand Guidelines are located under the Our Identity tab on the image library at the bottom of the page or you can go directly to the from here: Using Facebook, social media and your website to promote your classes We encourage you to use your own channels to promote Live Stronger for Longer and your Strength and Balance classes. Go to the Brand Guidelines and refer to Social Media Guidelines for Lead Agents - it s towards the end of the guidelines. Ordering brochures and We are creating a user friendly system so our older people, Providers/Lead Agents and stakeholders can download, or order resources sent to them directly from Live 2

3 posters direct from the ACC website NB: This is an interim function Stronger for Longer website - however, this functionality in progress. In the meantime you can order resources from the ACC website: go to Print the Live Stronger for Longer resources poster to see the range of material available We ve created a poster that you can print out and have on hand, this shows all the resources that available for you to order. Where to find Strength and Balance classes Strength and Balance classes are growing in number across the country and we are updating these classes on the website as they come into the movement. Go to: If you have any questions about the classes the Falls team: preventfalls@acc.co.nz Live Stronger for Longer Key messages Key statistics Below are some generic key messages and statistics about Live Stronger for Longer movement that you can use in your promotions: Live Stronger for Longer key messages: Falling over is not a normal part of the ageing process Many falls are preventable, and our aim is to help you stay on your feet and living the 3

4 life you want to live People who have good lower leg and core strength that s the thighs, mid-section and back also have good balance One of the best and easiest ways to avoid falling over is to build your core strength [Organisation name] is proud to be appointed lead agency for the [location] district Our role is to create and grow access to approved community strength and balance classes [Organisation name] are part of a nation-wide movement to reduce falls and fractures and support older people to live stronger for longer We live in the community, and want to see as many of our friends, relatives and neighbours involved in community strength and balance classes as possible Only providers who meet nationally approved evidence-based criteria for community group strength and balance will be eligible to use our approved quality tick logo Look for the tick when selecting a class to know that it meets national agreed standards If people can t get to a class they may be able to get support for strength and balance exercises at home Live Stronger for Longer key statistics: People over 65, have a 1 in 3 chance of falling, and between 10% and 20% of these falls result in an injury such as a hip fracture and often a long recovery after a stay in hospital For people aged 80 and over, the risk of falling increases to 1 in 2 Falls are the most common and costly cause of injury in older people Falls cause around 40% of ACC claims for people aged between 65 and 69, and around 60% of claims for those aged over 85 Severity of fall-related injury increases with age an 80-year-old has 15 times the risk of a hip fracture compared with a 65-year-old A hip fracture for someone aged 80 or over is associated with a 33% chance of entering residential care, and a 20% chance of dying within 12 months Using the approved tick Only classes that meet the assessment criteria for community strength and balance classes, or in-home strength and balance programmes are eligible to use the approved quality tick logo. 4

If you want to run exercise classes We re looking for exercise providers to join a nation-wide movement to reduce the incidence and severity of falls in our older adult population. If you want to run an exercise class and be part of the Live Stronger for Longer movement, please contact your Lead Agent, or if you want more information about the movement the Falls team on preventfalls@acc.co.nz Bone Health Bone health is very important. For more information visit: Key messages: It s never too late to improve our bone health If you have a family history of osteoporosis or are over 50 and have broken a bone after a minor bump of fall, talk to your Doctor you may benefit from treatment that can prevent another fracture There are lifestyle changes that can improve bones health, as well as safe and effective treatments that can prevent fractures Simple things like increasing exercise, maintain a healthy weight, reducing alcohol consumption, and cutting out smoking can all improve your chances of a fracture free retirement You can order All about Osteoporosis ACC 7430 via 5
