1 EXTENSION ACTIVITIES REPORT OF DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY MEDICINE FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER Participatory Mapping Exercise by 3 rd term FCP batch students: Organized by: Department of Community Medicine, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University). Date: 04/09/2018 Time: 9:30 am to 11:30am Venue: Malar Anganwadi. Faculty in-charge: Dr.Navya N., Assistant professor, Dr Pracheth R., Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine Postgraduate: Dr. Subhashree Nandy Other team members: Mrs.Ranjitha, Health Inspector Beneficiaries: Mothers of under-five children and residents of the village Number: 10 Brief Summary: As a part of teaching and training Community Diagnosis, 3 rd term MBBS students posted with the Department of Community Medicine were taught about participatory approaches for understanding health problems and needs of the community. Dr.Navya N., Assistant professor, Dr. Pracheth R, Assistant Professor, Dr. Subhashree Nandy Postgraduate Tutor, explained the students in detail about the exercise and briefed how to conduct it effectively in a field setting. Participatory mapping was conducted with 10 mothers of under-five children and residents of the village to understand health care utilization and geographical accessibility pertaining to Health care facilities. After a brief introduction to the target audience their consent was taken. Thereafter, the participants were asked to depict their locality in the form of a map with assistance from Mrs.Ranjitha, Health Inspector, after which they were asked to depict their houses in the map. Important landmarks like healthcare facilities, schools, colleges,

2 Anganawadis and places of worship were depicted in the map. The participants were then enquired regarding their health-seeking behavior thoroughly. Moreover, they were also asked if there were any problems which they encountered as far as accessibility, availability and utilization of health care services were concerned. Lessons learnt through these participatory approaches are: Type of health care facilities available in and around the study area. Barriers for utilization of health services Health-Seeking behavior of the reidents. The session concluded with advice regarding the type of health care facilities available. This would facilitate immediate health care for the needy. On request of the ASHA worker a health talk regarding Nutritious and Balanced diet for all age groups was imparted to the audience. The participants were then thanked for their active participation.

3 2. Health check- up at Thilak Nagar anganwadi Organized by: Department of Community Medicine, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University). Date: 7/9/2018 Time: am pm Venue: Thilak Nagar Anganwadi, Amblamogaru Faculty-in-charge: Dr Akshaya KM (Associate Professor), Department of Community Medicine Postgraduate: Dr Revathi TM Medical Intern: Dr Suhail Medico social worker: Mrs. Shwetha Beneficiaries: 6 children (5 girls and 1 boy) who attended Thilak Nagar Anganwadi Brief Summary A health check-up was organised at Thilak Nagar Anganwadi, Amblamogaru where 6 children (5 girls and 1 boy) under the age group of 0-6 years who attended the Anganwadi on the day of check up utilised the services. Various parameters like anthropometry, nutritional status and health status of the beneficiaries were assessed. It was found that the children received nonformal preschool education, supplementary meals regularly and vitamin and deworming tablets periodically. On examination 2 children common health condition observed was dental caries and were found to be underweight for the age.

5 3. Street play and Role play by 3 rd term FCP batch students Organized by: Department of Community Medicine, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University). Dates: 08/09/2018 Time: 9.00AM-12PM Topics covered: 1) First aid in case of unconscious persons. 2) Ill effects of substance abuse. Venues: 1. Harekala village bus stop 2. General Medicine ward and waiting area Yenepoya Medical College Hospital Faculty in-charge: Dr.Navya N., Assistant Professor, Dr Pracheth R., Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine Planning phase: The batch 3 rd term students posted in the Department of community medicine as a part of Family care programme were divided into two groups, one worked on first aid care in case of unconscious persons while the other on ill effects of substance abuse. Initially Dr.Pracheth R., Assistant Professor, Dr. Navya N., Assistant Professor and Dr. Subhashree Nandy, Postgraduate, explained the principles of health education. Following this the students decided to communicate the essence of both the topics through role plays. The scripts were prepared in local language (Kannada) covering important aspects of topics with a take home message. The contents were reviewed and necessary modifications were made. Delivery of the session: Session 1: Date: 08/09/2018 Venue: Harekala village bus stop Target audience: Auto rickshaw drivers and residents of Harekala

6 Number: 15 The session was delivered in the rural field practice area of Yenepoya Medical College, namely Harekala village. The students started off by introducing themselves and explaining the purpose of the session. They enacted a role play on first aid in case of unconscious person by highlighting an accident scenario. The purpose, principles of first aid, the technique involved in administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation was explained. The audience was asked if they had any queries. A concluding message was given. The session was delivered in Kannada language. Session 2: Date: Venue: Medicine ward, YMC hospital Target audience: Patients and attendants of the hospital Number: 30 The session was delivered in the in-patient ward attached to the department of General Medicine. The students introduced themselves to the audience, thereafter proceeding to the role play. Information regarding ill-effects substance abuse was conveyed through the role play. The topic was explained to the audience in a understandable manner i.e., in the local language, Kannada. Moreover, emphasis was given to what needs to be done to prevent substance abuse. A take-home message was given. Session 3: Date: Venue: Entrance (waiting area) of YMC hospital Target audience: Patients and attendants of the hospital Number: 20 The students enacted a role play on first aid in case of an unconscious person in the hospital entrance as well. The session was held in an interactive way to give the audience an opportunity to ask questions and clarify their doubts.

8 4. Health camp in Pandeshwar colony, Mangalore Organized by: The Department of Community Medicine, Yenepoya Medical College, Mangalore and Urban Primary Health Centre, Bunder. Date 20/09/2018 Time: 10AM -12:30PM Venue: Pandeshwar colony, Mangalore Faculty in Charge: Dr. Santosh K Yatnatti Post graduates: Dr. Roshan K (Pediatrics) Dr Sindhura Reddy (OBG) No of Beneficiaries: 20 Brief Summary: Dr Santosh K Yatnatti along with two post graduate students conducted a health checkup camp at Pandeshwar Colony, Mangalore. Most common symptoms encountered were common cold, headache, anemia and body ache. Adequate treatment was given and patients were referred to Yenepoya hospital for further management.

Memory assessment at the World Alzheimer s Day function organized by People s Association of Geriatric Empowerment (PAGE) at Town Hall Organized by: Department of Community Medicine, Yenepoya Medical College. Supported by: Medical Social Work Department and Marketing Department, Yenepoya Medical College Hospital. Date: 22/09/2018 Venue: Town Hall, Mangalore Team members: Time: 9:00am- 1:30pm 1. Mr. Mohammed Nibras, Intern posted in Urban Health Training Centre, Bunder 4. Ms. Hana EA, Intern posted in Urban Health Training Centre, Bunder Beneficiaries: Elderly persons (aged 60 years) and other adults (aged 18 years) who attended the World Alzheimer s Day function organized by PAGE at Town Hall and who voluntarily gave consent for memory assessment. Total number of beneficiaries: 75 adults of which 68 were elderly persons. Brief summary of the program: People s Association of Geriatric Empowerment (PAGE), Mangalore, is an association of Non- Governmental Organizations (NGOs) working for empowerment of the geriatric population of Mangalore. As a part of the World Alzheimer s Month, which is being observed by PAGE every year in the month of September, numerous programs were held. The month was launched in Kadri Park on 1 st September, 2018, which was witnessed by a huge assembly of elders and youth, from medical students, doctors, engineers, businessmen, government officers, a whole across section of society. This month long program culminated in the World Alzheimer s Day, observed on the 22 nd of September at Town Hall, Mangalore. As a part of this program, memory screening was conducted by a team of doctors from the Department of Community Medicine, Yenepoya Medical College, Mangalore. Mini-Cog which is a brief, simple and validated tool to screen for

10 cognitive impairment of older adults was used for the memory assessment. It is a 3-minute instrument that can be used effectively after brief training in both healthcare and community settings. It consists of two components, a 3-item recall test for memory and a simply scored clock drawing test. Those scoring less than 3 out of 5 in the Min-Cog assessment, were further screened using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), which is a brief instrument developed for the screening of milder forms of cognitive impairment. It is a single-page, 30-point test, which assess functions like short-term memory, working memory, visuospatial function, executive function, attention, concentration, language and orientation. A score of 26 out of 30 is considered as normal cognitive function. Those who scored <26 on MoCA were advised to consult a specialist for diagnostic work up and further management. A total of 75 adults were screened for memory impairment, of which 68 were 60 years old. A total of 14 persons had memory impairment and were advised further assessment by a specialist. Simultaneously, a team from Medical Social Work Department, Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, conducted free Blood Pressure and Random Blood Sugar estimation on 67 persons, who voluntarily agreed for the same. A representative from the Marketing Department, Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, promoted the services and schemes available at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital. 11 6. Free health check-up camp at Dubai Market, Mangalore. Organized by: Department of Community Medicine, Yenepoya Medical College. Total number of beneficiaries of the camp: 108 Most common condition: Blood pressure and sugar check-up Total number of referrals to Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, Deralakatte or other health facility: 14 Ms. Ayisha and Mrs. Sujatha who are employed in Urban Health Training Centre, Bunder, discussed with the management and authorities of Dubai Market, Mangalore, after their request to conduct a health check-up camp for the benefit of the people working in the market. Permission was obtained by Principal, Yenepoya Medical College, after which a banner displaying the date and time of the camp was displayed in the camp site, two days prior. A team of doctors and paramedical staff conducted the camp. A total of 108 beneficiaries were

12 examined in the health check-up camp. Blood pressure was examined for all the beneficiaries while blood sugar using glucometer was estimated for 87 beneficiaries. Essential drugs like amoxicillin, paracetamol, chlorpheniramine, diclofenac and ranitidine were dispensed to 49 of the beneficiaries. The camp concluded by 1.30 pm Health check-up being conducted by the team Blood sugar estimation being carried out by Mrs. Kavitha, laboratory technician
