3 What is the DAAT Training Programme? The East Berkshire Drug and Alcohol Action Teams (DAATs) Training Programme has been developed in response to the National Drug Strategy by Slough, Windsor & Maidenhead and Bracknell Forest DAATs. For any other information about the courses, please contact the East Berkshire DAATs. Slough DAAT: (FOR BOOKINGS) T: E: In order to get more drug users to access treatment, it is important to ensure staff are trained to be able to identify, signpost and refer substance misusers to the specialist treatment services that are available. All of the courses in this brochure are mapped to the Drug and Alcohol National Occupational Standards (DANOS), incorporate Models of Care and are delivered by the Training Exchange. The Training Exchange has 13 years experience of delivering drug and alcohol awareness training to thousands of people. 4 Enrolment Information Who can attend?: This training programme has been designed for staff and volunteers in East Berkshire, but is open to people from other areas. Staff who would benefit from the training include: Youth workers Teachers Housing Officers Supported Housing Workers Anti-Social Behaviour Workers Youth Offending Teams Health Visitors Practice Nurses Doctors Receptionists School Nurses Community Wardens PCSO s Police Officers Social Workers Social Work Assistants Probation Staff Enrolment: To enrol on any of these courses please phone Slough DAAT on , daat@slough.gov.uk, or complete the application form on Page 14. Cost: 120 for a 2 day course (volunteers 80) 60 for a 1 day course (volunteers 40) This cost includes refreshments and lunch. NB. You will be invoiced by Bracknell Forest DAAT following the course. Cancellations If you are unable to attend a course you have booked, please let us know as soon as possible. Call and follow with an to daat@slough.gov.uk. If you fail to give us a minimum of 10 working days notice to withdraw from the course (except in the case of illness, please give 48 hours notice) you will be charged the total cost of the training as a cancellation fee. It is not viable to offer courses for fewer than 8 participants. If a course is undersubscribed, we may have to cancel the course. You will need to enrol at least 1 WEEK PRIOR to the date of the course. This will ensure that materials and refreshments can be provided. 4 East Berkshire DAAT s Training Programme 2015/2016
5 An Introduction to Drugs & Alcohol - 1 day Aim: This course has been designed to provide key information to help workers begin to assess clients for drug and alcohol problems. It will address some of the key background information about substances (including alcohol) and the impact their use may have. Course Rationale: This course will look at the different types of drugs that are commonly misused and how these may cause problems for an individual. By demystifying the drugs and the terminology, it will develop workers ability to provide support in a way that is evidence based and client focussed. Target Audience: All those in day-to-day contact with members of the general public, (whether their role involves working with adults or children) who may be affected by Substance Misuse, this should include staff regardless of whether they are professionals, administrators or volunteers. Objectives/Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, participants will be able to: Describe how various drugs affect the body Clarify terms like addiction, dependency, misuse and abuse Use the unit measuring system to work out how much a client is drinking Identify reasons why people use illegal drugs Clarify when drug or alcohol use becomes a problem Use the cycle of change model to find ways to work with clients effectively DANOS Modules: AA1: Recognise indications of substance misuse AA3: Support individuals to access services and facilities AB2: Support individuals who are substance users AD1: Raise awareness about substances, their use and their effects AD4: Develop and disseminate information and advice about substance misuse, health and social wellbeing 5 East Berkshire DAAT s Training Programme 2015/2016
6 Dual Diagnosis (Mental Health) - 1 day Aim: This course aims to provide core information on how drugs, alcohol and mental health issues interrelate. Course Rationale: The interface between mental health, drugs and alcohol is highly complex and not necessarily well understood. Phrases like 'dual diagnosis' cause workers considerable anxiety. Many feel unskilled in dealing with it and as a consequence, clients often feel caught between services and struggle to get appropriate help - this short course introduces the issues and enables workers to examine their role. Target Audience: Workers in contact with mental health clients using illegal substances e.g. Community Mental Health Teams, Child and Adolescent Mental Heath staff, General Practitioners, Practice Nurses, Accident and Emergency Staff, Social Workers, Supported Housing Workers, Probation Staff. Objectives/Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, participants will be able to: Discuss how illegal substances alter emotional states List ways in which patterns of substance use impact on a client s mental health Describe how illegal drugs may negatively affect mental health Examine the implications for clients of models like dual diagnosis Review respective roles, information sharing and referral pathways DANOS Modules: AA1: Recognise indications of substance misuse AB2: Support individuals who are substance users MH2: Enable people with mental health needs to access and benefit from a service Dates / Venues / Times: Please see pages for details of course dates, times and venues. 6 East Berkshire DAAT s Training Programme 2015/2016
7 Parental Substance Misuse - 1 day Aim: To support practitioners working with families where substance misuse may be an issue. It will address the impacts of substance use on parenting and children. Course Rationale: The problematic use of drugs and alcohol by parents has the potential to have a huge impact on the lives of their children in many negative ways. A major for workers is how confident they can be that a child is safe and getting what they need to thrive. Drawing on the insights of Hidden Harm and other relevant evidence, this course looks at what workers need to do to help parents and families minimise the potential harm that could is caused by drugs and alcohol. Target Audience: Workers in contact with families where drug use is an issue e.g. Youth workers, Foster Carers, Education Welfare, School Nurses, Community Mental Health Teams, Social Workers, Housing Officers, Domestic Abuse Workers, Anti- Social Behaviour Workers. Objectives/Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, participants will be able to: Describe how parental substance use can cause risk to children Consider the strategies for addressing substance use in families Help families to minimise the impact of their substance use Be more confident in responding to familial substance use and how to refer and report effectively Decide when it is relevant to make a referral to the local authority DANOS Modules: AB2: Support individuals who are substance users HSC377: Work in collaboration with carers in the caring role HSC388: Relate to families, parents and carers 7 East Berkshire DAAT s Training Programme 2015/2016
8 Working with Young People with Substance Misuse Issues - 1 day Aim: This course will help workers understand the types of drugs and alcohol young people use, why they use them, and how things are changing. Course Rationale: There is increasing evidence of young people using substances, such as, ketamine, GHB, steroids and a range of legal highs, including alcohol. The course will help workers to recognise drug/alcohol issues with young people, respond to them appropriately, and know when to refer to specialist help. Target Audience: All those in day-to-day contact with young people, regardless of whether their role involves working predominantly with substance misuse or more general issues e.g. youth workers, social workers, community leaders etc. Dates / Venues / Times: Please see pages for details of course dates, times and venues. Objectives/Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, participants will be able to: Describe the nature and extent of substance use amongst young people List factors that influence young people to become involved in drugs and alcohol Identify factors that increase the vulnerability of young people through their own and others substance misuse Provide some substance related advice and information to young people Clarify their role in supporting a young person s substance misuse Describe when to involve other agencies DANOS Modules: AA1: Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists AB2: Support individuals who are substance users HSC330: Support individuals to access and use services and facilities AD1: Raise awareness about substances, their use and effects 8 East Berkshire DAAT s Training Programme 2015/2016
9 Motivational Interviewing - 2 day Aim: This course introduces the concept of Motivational Interviewing (MI) which helps people to recognise their problems and do something about them. Course Rationale: MI is a person-centred counselling style designed to strengthen an individuals motivation to change and move them towards a specific goal. It can be used in many situations, but has been found to be particularly successful in the field of drug and alcohol treatment. Target Audience: Workers in regular contact with those who misuse drugs or alcohol such as Substance Misuse Workers, Social Workers, Supported Housing Workers. By the end of the course participants will have had opportunities to: Identify when it would be appropriate to use MI Use basic MI techniques to help motivate service users. Develop reflective listening skills Deliver the Motivational Interviewing within the four key phases of motivational interviewing Understand the role of Motivational Interviewing within a wider process of change. 10 Cannabis: interventions, trends in use and mental health affects - 1 day Aim: This course focuses on cannabis, its effects, the risks associated with it and the interventions that can be used to help people reduce their use. Course Rationale: Cannabis is the most widely used illegal drug in Britain. The majority of cannabis smoked today is Skunk which has been linked to mental health problems. Target Audience: All those in day-to-day contact with members of the public, particularly young people, regardless of whether their role involves working with predominantly individuals with substance misuse or more general issues. Objectives/Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, participants will be able to: Understand how cannabis is used and the effects upon an individuals physiology and neurology. Identify different interventions DANOS Modules: AA1: Recognise indications of substance misuse AB2: Support individuals who are substance users AD1: Raise awareness about substances, their use and effects HSC33: Reflect on and develop your practice 10 East Berkshire DAAT s Training Programme 2015/2016
11 Mephedrone, legal highs, new psychoactive substances - 1 day Aim: This course has been designed to increase workers knowledge and awareness of Legal highs or New Psychoactive substances (NPS) as they are also known. It will also focus on Mephedrone (which was a Legal High until 2010). Course Rationale: Legal Highs mimic the effects of Illegal substances. They are widely available through the internet and in head shops, but there is limited information available relating to their potency, risk and long term effects. The first part of this course is aimed to increase knowledge relating to Legal Highs. The second part, focuses on Mephedrone; a powerful stimulant that was initially a Legal High, but was made illegal due to the harm it was causing. The course looks at the way the drug is used and its effects. Target Audience: All those in day-to-day contact with members of the public particularly young people regardless of whether their role involves working predominatly with those with substance misuse or more general issues e.g. Youth Workers, Social Workers, etc. Dates / Venues / Times: Please see pages for details of course dates, times and venues.
