My doctoral dissertation research at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas was completed in April 1985, under the direction of Jim Hom, Ph.D. My research involved an investigation of the neuropsychological status of patients medically diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease as compared to that of normally aging individuals. This study investigated a broad range of neuropsychological functions and demonstrated major cognitive deficits in all areas of more complex cognitive functioning in the Alzheimer group which clearly surpassed the age-associated deficits of the normal aging group. However, simple sensory and motor functions were found to be intact in the Alzheimer group. Although memory functions were the most potent discriminators between the two groups, attention, concentration, and abstraction abilities were also found to be comparably impaired in the Alzheimer group.
