2 ~ AN OPPORTUNITY TO EARN SIX HOURS OF CATEGORY A CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT ~ Participants may attend ONE morning workshop & ONE afternoon workshop. MORNING WORKSHOPS: 9 AM - 12:15 PM Diagnosis and Treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder Lauren Turner-Brown, Ph.D. Assistant Director, UNC TEACCH Autism Program This workshop will provide a basic introduction to autism spectrum disorder with a focus on best practices in diagnosis and treatment. We will cover changes in DSM-V, assessment tools for diagnosis across the lifespan. We will also describe current knowledge about effective early interventions and interventions across the lifespan for individuals with autism spectrum disorder. By the end of this Workshop, participants will be able to: 1. state the diagnostic criteria for ASD as applied to a 3 year old and 21 year old; 2. list and describe 3 assessment tools useful to psychologists in assessing individuals with ASD; 3. list common differential diagnoses to consider when assessing for ASD; 4. describe 2 evidence based practices for targeting challenging behavior in ASD; 5. describe 2 evidence based practices for targeting social skills in ASD; and 6. list 2 online resources where clinicians can fine detailed instructions for implementing evidence based practices can be found. Instructional Level: Basic Educational Format: Lecture and Discussion About the Presenter Dr. Lauren Turner-Brown is the Assistant Director of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill TEACCH Autism Program and an Assistant Director in the Department of Psychiatry. She earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Vanderbilt University and completed postdoctoral clinical and research training at UNC- Chapel Hill with TEACCH and the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities. She has extensive clinical and research experience with autism spectrum disorders across the lifespan. Her current research focuses on early identification of ASD and interventions for toddlers as well as adolescents and adults.
3 Untangling Alzheimer s Care: Collaborative Perspectives on the Diagnosis, Assessment, and the Ongoing Management of Dementia Ellen Nicola, Ph.D. Psychologist, Cornerstone Behavioral Medicine Chester Haworth, M.D. Neurologist, Cornerstone Neurology Karen Pollard, Psy.D. Clinical Neuropsychologist, Cornerstone Neurology Timothy Ainger, Ph.D. Neuropsychology Fellow, Cornerstone Neuropsychology As psychologists, we need to recognize the importance of memory in the healing process. Understanding the disorders that cause our clients to have cognitive disruption that could impact the therapeutic process is vital. The goal of this workshop is to provide information on various cognitive disorders, including warning signs to know when a referral for further examination may be necessary. Additionally, we will provide up-to-date information on current treatments for cognitive disorders, namely Alzheimer s disease, as well as future directions in dementia treatment. Finally, participants will hear information on strategies that can be used in therapy to assist patients and caregivers. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to: 1. know the difference between normal aging, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia; 2. increase awareness of warning signs that could signal that a client needs formal cognitive assessment; 3. gain a deeper understanding of the processes involved in formal cognitive assessment; 4. state commonly prescribed medications; 5. state where dementia treatment is headed; and 6. understand strategies in therapy that could assist patients and caregivers. Instructional Level: Intermediate Educational Format: Lecture, Q&A About the Presenters Dr. Ellen Nicola is a licensed psychologist with Cornerstone Behavioral Medicine, High Point, NC. She attended Gettysburg College for her bachelor s and University of Pittsburgh for her Ph.D. from the counseling psychology program. She has practiced in NC for 22 years, providing primarily psychotherapy and psychological evaluations for adults. Her first 11 years were in the community mental health system in Forsyth County. The last 11 years have been in small and large private practices, an adult inpatient unit, and an LME/MCO. In the 4 and a half years she has been with Cornerstone, she spent 1 year co-located in 2 primary care practices and currently is co-located with the Cornerstone neuropsychologists.
4 Dr. Chester Haworth s long career as a neurologist began when he graduated from Duke University Medical School in He completed his residency at Duke and NC Memorial Hospital. He has been with Cornerstone Health Care since it was founded 20 years ago, and serves as the Medical Director of the Cornerstone Memory and Aging Care Clinic, a joint venture between Cornerstone Neurology and Cornerstone Neuropsychology practices. He is certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and ASN certified for neurological MRI and CT. Dr. Karen Pollard was awarded her undergraduate degree from California State University, Northridge where she graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors. She earned her M.A. and Psy.D. Degrees from the University of La Verne in La Verne, CA. Dr. Pollard completed an internship specializing in Clinical Neuropsychology at the Coatesville VA Medical Center in Coatesville, PA. She completed her postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology at the University of Virginia, Department of Neurology in Charlottesville, VA, where she performed neuropsychological assessments of patients, including working on an interdisciplinary memory and aging care clinic where she performed assessments on individuals with a plethora of neurological conditions, including: Alzheimer s disease and other dementias, Parkinson s disease, MS., stroke, traumatic brain injury, and many others. Dr. Pollard has been employed at Cornerstone Healthcare as a neuropsychologist since 2012 and is actively involved with Cornerstone s Memory and Aging Care Clinic. She continues to perform assessments on individuals with various neurological conditions as outpatients. She also consults with Cone Health on an inpatient rehabilitation unit, where assessments are performed on individuals in the setting of acute stroke, traumatic brain injury or spinal cord injury. Dr. Timothy Ainger earned a master s degree and a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Gallaudet University in August of His dissertation is entitled, Examining and Understanding the Executive Functioning Capabilities of a Schizophrenic Inpatient Population. He also holds a bachelor s degree from the University of Tennessee (psychology) and a master s degree from Barry University (clinical psychology). He completed his clinical internship at the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia, and is currently a postdoctoral fellow in clinical neuropsychology at Cornerstone Neuropsychology in High Point, NC. His research and clinical work have focused largely on neurodegenerative disorders, the seriously mentally ill, the d/deaf, and forensics, having been previously employed by both the District of Columbia and the United States governments. **12:15 PM: LUNCH & ANNUAL DIPP MEETING** Both lunch and the Annual DIPP Meeting are included with registration and open to all conference participants.
5 AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS: 1:30-4:45 PM Differential Diagnosis and Comorbidity in ASD Lauren Turner-Brown, Ph.D. Assistant Director, UNC TEACCH Autism Program A majority of the increase in prevalence in Autism Spectrum Disorders is in individuals without intellectual disability. The question of ASD is raised at older ages than for individuals with ASD and intellectual disability. In addition, many of these individuals are treated under various other diagnostic categories (e.g., ADHD, learning disorders, depression, anxiety disorders) before realizing ASD is the most appropriate diagnosis. This workshop will present current knowledge about differential diagnosis between ASD and these other conditions as well as issues about comorbidity and treatment for complex cases. By the end of this Workshop, participants will be able to: 1. describe how changes from DSM-IV to DSM-V affect ASD diagnosis and comorbidity; 2. list 5 conditions that are commonly comorbid with ASD; 3. describe symptom differences for ASD, ADHD, OCD; 4. list 3 assessment tools for high functioning ASD and limitations; and 5. state 3 strategies for adapting cognitive behavior therapy to target comorbid anxiety and ASD. 6 The Current State of Integrated Care Neftali Serrano, Psy.D. Director of Clinical Training, Center of Excellence for Integrated Care A Program of the N.C. Foundation for Advanced Health Programs The integration of primary care and behavioral healthcare has become a central aspect of service delivery reform efforts. This seminar will introduce participants to the prevailing models, current state of the literature and an orientation to the roles that psychologists can play in leading the way towards meaningful integration. By the end of this Workshop, participants will be able to: 1. identify the current models of integrated care; 2. identify common barriers to integrated care; 3. describe the challenges for psychologists in transitioning to the integrated environment; 4. name and describe the core components of a typical behavioral health consult; and 5. describe the business challenges associated with integrated care. Instructional Level: Intermediate Educational Format: Lecture About the Presenter Dr. Serrano is Director of Clinical Training at the Center of Excellence in North Carolina where he provides technical assistance to health organizations across the state to improve or initiate integration projects. The center is a part of the non-profit foundation, The North Carolina Foundation for Advanced Health Programs. He has devoted his entire career to working with federally qualified health centers (FQHC), starting integrated care programs and consulting with clinics in underserved settings to assist with implementation of primary care behavioral health (PCBH) programs. Dr. Serrano's research interests include program development evaluations and outcome studies related to PCBH, particularly in underserved settings. In 2014 Dr. Serrano edited an e-book, The Implementer s Guide to Primary Care Behavioral Health, a practice management handbook.
