CARDI research grants agreed and Call 2 coming up CARDI was delighted to receive a large number of applications for Call 1 of the grants programme and has now informed applicants if they have been successful or not. We have also put a short document on our website giving advice on the factors that distinguished the successful applications. The 4 th Living Knowledge Conference - Engaged Communities, Engaged Universities: Developing policy and practice in participatory research This conference takes place from August 2009 in Belfast. Recent CARDI publications include: Stocktake of Ageing Public Policy Initiatives in Ireland, North and South This document gives researchers, policy makers and members of the voluntary and
2 community sector an easy to navigate overview of existing ageing policy initiatives on the island of Ireland and at EU and International level. Government Structures in Ireland North and South This resource sets out government structure across the island Ireland. All publications are available at: Forthcoming CARDI publications include: Goods, Facilities and Services: Lessons from Ireland on Equality for Older People This research briefing will highlight key findings and look to lessons from other countries where age discrimination in the provision of goods, facilities and services has been prohibited. Ageing Research Updates Research into pensions reform reveals Ireland is not prepared for demographic change This research from the Centre for Economic Studies and Institute for Economic Research (CESifo) indexes pension reform measures across 17 EU countries. Businesses in UK not reaching older market Latest research from Age Concern and Help the Aged finds 57% of older people feel that businesses in the UK ignore them and focus most of their attentions on the 'youth' market. Does free medical care increase GP use by older people? New research asks if the abolition of charges for GP visits for all those over 70 years of age in 2001 led to a significant change in their GP visiting behaviour. Submit abstracts now for the Irish Gerontology Scientific Meeting 09 The deadline for abstracts is 31 st May, The meeting will take place at the Spires Building, Belfast (opposite Europa Hotel) on September 25th-26th Early bird registration offer closes on 30 th June. 9 out of 10 older people failed by adult protection system Action on Elder Abuse (AEA) study shows adult protection systems did not work for 90% of older people who suffered elder abuse Ageing Policy Updates NI Assembly debates healthcare for older people On the 18 th May Assembly members called on the Minister of Health, Social Services and Public Safety to reconfigure and enhance services for older people and to ensure that these services are integrated, person-centred and well-staffed. Read the full debate at: Update on status of the National Council on Ageing and Older People The Bill to suspend the National Council has been referred to the Joint Committee on Health and Children. Further information available at:
3 Treatment of Alzheimer s disease questioned at the NI Assembly The Minister of Health, Social Services and Public Safety was questioned on drug treatments available for Alzheimer s disease patients in Northern Ireland Further information is available at : UK Government publishes Equality Bill outlawing age discrimination. A national review of age discrimination in health and social care is taking place and a report will be published in October AGE calls for a ban of mandatory retirement ages Age, European Platform for Older People, publishes its general declaration. Read more at /pdf_age_general_assembly_final_declaration_8_may_2009.pdf Research and Policy Publications Adequacy of Pension Systems in Europe: An Analysis Based on Comprehensive Replacement Rates This paper looks at individuals access to appropriate pension entitlements, public and/or private, which allow them to maintain reasonable standard of living after retirement Options for care funding: What could be done now? This report looks at how the current economic climate could negatively impact the present long term care funding model. According to Government figures the present model is already unsustainable and funding would need to be trebled to maintain the status quo. Falls and fear of falling: burden, beliefs and behaviours Research looks into falls and fear of falling, poor health outcomes including decreased quality of life, functional limitations, restricted activity and depression. Work orientations of older employees change over the 90s and into the 00s The Policy Studies Institute reports that older employees have become relatively disillusioned in the work place, and show that their negative feelings are aimed at their employers rather than the general employment situation. End of life care - House of Commons Public Accounts Committee Report This report by the Comptroller and Auditor General highlights evidence from witnesses of the Department of Health and the NHS on the provision of end of life care. It examines the scale and quality of end of life care, the current and future approach to commissioning and funding of services, and the ability of NHS and social care staff to provide such care.
