5 Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center In 2015 and 2016, we were named as one of the top 10 best hospitals for pediatric cancer treatment by U.S. News and World Report. We are the pediatric component of Emory University s National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated Winship Cancer Institute, the first and only NCI designated cancer institute in Georgia. We are among the four largest pediatric cancer centers in the country, and the largest in the Southeast. In 2016, we performed 78 BMTs, making us one of the largest pediatric BMT programs in the country. We are the largest pediatric hematology program in the country, including the largest pediatric sickle cell disease program. Of the 200+ leading children s hospitals that care for children with cancer and participate in the Children s Oncology Group (COG), we ranked in the top 2 percent nationally for enrollment in clinical trials. We have more than 300 clinical studies available to our patients. We have one of the largest pediatric brain tumor and leukemia/lymphoma programs in the country (we follow more than 580 and 780 children and young adults each year with brain tumors and leukemia/lymphoma, respectively). We generate direct costs of over $16 million per year in extramural research funding, including more than $9.4 million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). 5
