6 Speakers Dr Gabriele De Luca Dr Gabriele De Luca is a clinician-scientist in Clinical Neurology at the University of Oxford. He completed his neurology training at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA where he was Chief Resident and an Assistant Professor of Neurology. During his time at Mayo Clinic, he won several clinical awards including the Robert J. Filberg Fellowship, an award given to the top Canadian trainee at Mayo Clinic, and the Henry W. Woltman Award, a prize given to the top resident/fellow for clinical excellence in Neurology at Mayo Clinic. On completion of his Neurology training, he returned to Oxford supported by the prestigious AANF/CMSC John F. Kurtzke Clinician-Scientist Development Award. His research work has resulted in numerous publications, awards, and invited platforms both nationally and internationally. Prof Gavin Giovannoni Professor Gavin Giovannoni was appointed to the Chair of Neurology, Blizard Institute, Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London and the Department of Neurology, Barts and The London NHS Trust in November In September 2008 he took over as the Neuroscience and Trauma Centre Lead. Gavin did his undergraduate medical training at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, where he graduated in He moved to the Institute of Neurology, University College London, Queen Square, London in 1993 after completing his specialist training in neurology in South Africa. After three years as a clinical research fellow, under Professor Ed Thompson, and then two years as the Scarfe Lecturer, working for Professor W Ian McDonald, he was awarded a PhD in immunology from the University of London in He was appointed as a Clinical Senior Lecturer, Royal Free and University College Medical School, in 1998 and moved back to Institute of Neurology, Queen Square in He was promoted to Reader in Neuroimmunology in His clinical interests are multiple sclerosis and other inflammatory disorders of the central nervous system. Gavin is particularly interested in clinical issues related to optimising MS disease modifying therapies. Dr David Hunt David Hunt is a Wellcome Trust Clinician Scientist and Honorary Consultant Neurologist who leads clinics and research in the field of brain inflammation. He trained in medicine at Cambridge, London and Basel. His PhD research at Cambridge University was in the field of developmental neuroscience and neuroinflammation. In 2009 he moved to Edinburgh where he completed his neurological training and established a Wellcome Trust-funded laboratory to study the molecular basis of neuroinflammatory diseases such as multiple sclerosis and lupus. David runs a weekly clinic for patients with complex neuroinflammatory diseases.

7 Dr David Paling Dr David Paling is currently a Consultant Neurologist at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, visiting Consultant Neurologist at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield and Clinical Lead for the MS Centre, Sheffield. David s clinical training was in Manchester and Queen Square London where he completed a PhD under the supervision of Dr Kapoor and Prof Miller in novel MRI imaging techniques in patients with progressive MS. His current research interests include integrating MRI into clinical practice, novel imaging techniques in patients with progressive MS, technology aided assessment of disability, MS symptom management and clinical trials. Prof Basil Sharrack Professor Basil Sharrack is Consultant Neurologist and Honorary Professor of Clinical Neurology at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield. His main areas of interest are neuro-inflammation and degeneration in MS, therapeutic clinical trials in MS, autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) and cognitive rehabilitation for people with MS, and idiopathic intracranial hypertension. Basil has authored over 90 peer reviewed original articles and received over 8 million in grants and income from commercial clinical trials. He plays a leading role in the design and conduct of MS clinical trials in the UK, which include the first gene therapy trial at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the first phase III AHSCT treatment in patients with MS. Funding sources are the MS Society, National Institute of Health Research, and Biogen. Basil is the Director of the Sheffield MS Research Clinic. He is also Chair of the Sheffield Research Ethics Committee and a member of the EBMT Autoimmune Diseases Working Party.

8 Alison Thomson Alison Thomson is a designer and a researcher who has worked with the Barts MS Research team at Queen Mary University of London for over seven years. A core empirical part of her research investigates how the patient experiences of people with MS might be improved by way of design-research and design-led interventions. Part of this research involves understanding how health-care users can contribute to codesigned health services and how health-care futures might be reimagined through design research. In her current role as a Lecturer in Patient Public Involvement and Public Engagement at Queen Mary University of London, Alison established the Barts MS Patient Advisory Group. This group of expert patients reviews all projects that the Barts MS team are working on to ensure that they are in line with what the patient community would want or need. They have developed a number of award winning initiatives that have improved the patient experience and peoples understanding of MS Research on a global level. John Thorpe Dr John Thorpe has been a consultant neurologist at Addenbrooke s Hospital, Cambridge and Peterborough City Hospital since He studied medicine in Oxford and London and trained in neurology at St Thomas and the Royal Free Hospitals and the National Hospital, Queen Square. His MD research was carried out in the Institute of Neurology, Queen Square in MRI applications to the study of MS and related disorders. He set up the MS disease modifying service at Addenbrooke s and has been involved in its running since inception.

9 Organisational Team Sarah Gillett Managing Director, Neurology Academy Sarah Gillett was previously manager of a qualifications authority and has now been Managing Director of the Neurology Academy for 15 years. Sarah s has over 20 years experience of event management and educational courses that are delivered to maximize beneficial impact on the NHS. Sarah has grown the Neurology Academy from what was just a few Parkinson s disease courses to a company that now specialises in three different conditions - Parkinson s, dementia, and multiple sclerosis with new disease area courses in the pipeline. Jackey Spiers Academy Partnership Manager Jackey brings a diverse skill set to her role as Academy Partnership Manager at the Neurology Academy. Originally trained as a chef, Jackey has over 25 years experience in business administration, project coordination and event management in a range of different environments from hospital administration to the education sector to IT Supplier Management. Since joining us in 2017, Jackey brings her efficient, organised approach to organising and delivering the MasterClass courses. Jon Johnson AV Technician Jon has spent 28 years working in the live event industry, both nationally and internationally. He started working with the Neurology Academy in 2004 while managing the South West Branch of an Audio Visual Company. Apart from a short break while he built his house, he has been working with the Academy ever since. Jon currently works as a Theatre Technician at Truro College and freelance Audio Visual Technician. Johanna Marx Media Coordinator Johanna is new to the team and joins us as a Media Coordinator. Originally from Germany, she studied Communication Design in Hamburg. She brings a range of skills to the Neurology Academy, such as graphic design, website administration and marketing and is the GDPR officer for the company.
