Hompes Method Prac00oner Training Level II Lesson Forty Three Sex Hormones Health for the People Ltd not for reuse without expressed permission Hompes Method is a trading name of Health For The People L< Registered in England & Wales Company # VAT #
Main Sex Hormones Several hormones play primary roles in the menstrual cycle While they re known as sex, or reproduc:ve hormones, they exert many more influences on metabolism energy, mood, cardiovascular, etc. If only doctors acknowledged and honoured this!
Main Sex Hormones Pituitary gonadotropins: Follicle s:mula:ng hormone Luteinising hormone Ovarian: Estrogens (1, 2, and 3) Progesterone Testosterone Note that these hormones can be made outside the ovaries The brain, adrenals and fat cells can produce these hormones They are all steroid hormones (derived from cholesterol)
Follicle S0mula0ng Hormone FSH: Produced in anterior pituitary In women S:mulates growth of ovarian follicles before the release of the egg from the follicle at ovula:on S:mulates oestrogen produc:on in ovaries» Massively important hormone in PCOS In men Acts on Sertoli cells of the testes to s:mulate sperm produc:on
Luteinizing Hormone LH: Produced in anterior pituitary In women Acute rise in mid-cycle triggers ovula:on and development of corpus luteum Triggers oestrogen produc:on in ovaries In men S:mulates produc:on of testosterone in Leydig cells
FSH and LH Summary (Wikipedia)
Puberty Hypothalamus begins secre:ng GnRH Triggers FSH and LH Age 11 in girls, age 12 in boys Influenced by gene:cs (small), inflamma:on, other hormones (e.g. insulin, cor:sol, lep:n), autoimmune issues (possibly), etc.
Estrogens (E1, E2, E3) Produc:on Ovaries Follicle around the ovum (egg) Adrenal glands Fat cells Exogenous Birth control HRT (menopause) Environmental estrogens and estrogen mimickers
Estrogens (E1, E2, E3) E1 Estrone Made axer menopause in fat cells from androstenedione, and also in ovaries Correlates with being overweight E2 Estradiol Most ac:ve and potent Most cells have E2 receptors E3 Estriol Weakest and least ac:ve Predominantly made by placenta (some in liver) Affects vaginal walls Receptors on hair, nails, skin, mucosal membranes
Estrogen general effects Reproduc:ve: Maintains and lubricates vagina, vulva and cervix Helps to maintain vaginal microbiome Causes egg to mature inside follicle Supports growth of follicle Makes uterine lining grow to prepare for pregnancy Helps breast :ssues grow in prepara:on for making milk Promotes foetal growth S:mulates body fat accumula:on to help the foetus grow
Estrogen general effects Non-Reproduc:ve: Prevents bone destruc:on by osteoclasts Protects against high blood pressure S:mulates lipoprotein lipase Reduces insulin Relaxes blood vessels in heart Feelings of femininity Improves libido/sex drive Supports memory Improves skin tone Mood (protects against depression) Supports sleep
Progesterone Produc:on: Corpus luteum axer ovula:on Only while a woman is ovula:ng Produced in high amounts by placenta once pregnancy occurs Adrenal glands Via pregnenolone Testes Brain Very high concentra:ons found here
Progesterone general effects Reproduc:ve: Pro-gesta*onal hormone (pro-gest-erone) Improves sex drive (including men I can a\est to this!) Prepares endometrium for implanta:on of fer:lised ovum Cri:cal to survival of ovum once fer:lized Ensures foetal survival Prevents overgrowth of endometrium and breast :ssue Prevents fibrocys:c breasts Increases estrogen receptor sensi:vity
Progesterone general effects Non-reproduc:ve: Acts against estrogens as a protec:ve measure and to maintain op:mal balance Pro-metabolic (supports thyroid, burns fat) Natural an:-anxiety / calming effect and an:depressant Improves sleep Helps to maintain op:mal blood sugar and insulin Helps to build bone Protects the brain and prevents epilep:c seizures Essen:al for thymus and immune func:on Needed for detoxifica:on Improves cardiovascular func:on and reduces clo_ng Relieves arthri:s Significantly effects diges:on in some women
Testosterone Produc:on (women) Ovaries Adrenals Via steroid hormone pathways Corpus luteum Men Testes Adrenals Via steroid hormone pathways
Testosterone general effects Reproduc:ve: Improves sex drive/libido in men and women Increases sexual fantasies Enlargement of penis Enlargement of clitoris Clitoral sensi:vity Orgasm strength
Testosterone general effects Non-reproduc:ve: Promotes muscle strength Libido means drive for life Improved sense of confidence and well-being Improves bone density Feelings of security Boundary se_ng Body hair (subject to individual taste!)
What Affects Sex Hormone Func0on? Hormone produc:on Transport and availability Receptor availability and binding Breakdown and excre:on Many things can interfere and compromise these It s not just about the hormone level in a lab test
What Affects Sex Hormone Func0on? Hormone produc:on Transport and availability Receptor availability and binding Breakdown and excre:on
Hormone Produc0on Hormone Produc:on: Raw materials Cholesterol is needed for steroids Diet, diges:on and absorp:on Nutri:onal / enzyme co-factors T3, vitamin A, vitamin B5, etc. HPG axis func:on Hypothalamus, pituitary, gonads Toxins, infec:ons, inflamma:on Mold (CIRS) Stress in all forms
Transport & Availability Transport & availability: Only 1-2% of ho Transcor:n / Cor:costeroid-binding globulin Binds progesterone and cor:sol SERPINA6 gene polymorphisms are being inves:gated Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) Glycoprotein produced in liver, brain, uterus, testes and placenta Binds estrogens and androgens, rendering them inac:ve Insulin, thyroid, prolac:n, growth hormone influence levels Also transported on albumin to a lesser extent SHBG Gene polymorphisms are being inves:gated
Receptor availability and sensi0vity Possible problems: Gene:c Estrogen insensi:vity syndrome (EIS) rela:vely rare Androgen insensi:vity syndrome (AIS) rela:vely common Complete androgen insensi:vity syndrome (sterility) Blocked sex hormone receptors High insulin The pill, HRT, etc. Other xenoestrogens plas:cs, pes:cides, etc.? Medica:ons (usually for breast cancer) Selec:ve estrogen receptor modulators SERM
Hormone breakdown and excre0on Factors affec:ng hormone clearance: Ongoing exposure Not just to hormones, but also stressors and toxins (e.g. mold) Gene:c polymorphism issues MTHFR, COMT, SULT, NAT, CYP, etc. Enzyme/nutri:onal cofactors Iron, B vitamins, glutathione, etc. Microbiome and beta-glucuronidase Elevated b-glucuronidase enables estrogen reabsorp:on

Summary The pituitary hormones are FSH and LH The main sex hormones are progesterone, estrogens x3 and progesterone They run the menstrual cycle They have far-reaching roles beyond reproduc:on It s not just about hormone produc:on and levels it s also about transport, receptors and breakdown
Thank you! Thanks a mill for devouring. Next up, we ll look at what can go wrong with the menstrual cycle and its associated hormones, and begin looking into WHY it can all go wrong.

The Sex Hormone Players (func0ons)
The Sex Hormone Players The table is not exhaus:ve, but it goes some way to showing you how hormone imbalances can have a profound systemic effect that goes way beyond just the func:ons of sex and procrea:on.
The Sex Hormone Players (deficiency Sx) I also created a li\le summary table of symptoms that may develop due to deficiencies of the aforemen:oned hormones. We commonly observe hormone excesses as well or various combina:ons. Cor:sol excess with thyroid deficiency Cor:sol excess with progesterone deficiency Oestrogen excess with progesterone deficiency Etc
The Sex Hormone Players
My Top Resources I ve read dozens of books about hormone balance in my :me and s:ll have few on the shelf that have as yet gone unopened. On the following pages you ll find my top three or four picks. I ve provided plenty of videos and ar:cles in your resources sec:on, as well.
