1 Featured News Get Ready to Earn Your up to $480 Discount for 2016! Healthy Living Newsletter It s never too soon to plan ahead. So, as you think about your New Year s resolutions, make sure better health and earning your $40 per month up to $480 per year off your M Medical Plan premium* are on the list. In January, you can take the first step toward earning your incentive discount by completing an online health assessment. You ll be asked questions about your diet, exercise, sleep, stress and general lifestyle to discover how healthy you are and how healthy you could be. When you ve finished the assessment, you ll receive: A dashboard summary of your health assessment results Access to your 2014 wellness screening results Activity options to help you follow your path toward better health and earn your incentive discount for 2016 Connection to 1-on-1 support to help you better manage your health and reach your goals We hope you ll take advantage of the opportunity to participate and live healthier 365 days a year. A healthier lifestyle results in more energy and an improved mood which is good for you. It also means a positive, healthier work culture, which is good for the future of 3M. This year, 7 out of 10 employees took charge of their health and earned their $40 per month up to $480 per year off their M Medical Plan premium.* We want to keep that momentum going. We still have a few months to go before we get started on earning your 2016 incentive discount, but you can make better health a priority every day. For a little encouragement, read some of your colleague s success stories by visiting 3MHealthyLiving.com. If you have a story to share, healthy-living-resources@mmm.com. To learn more about 3M Healthy Living, go to 3M Source > Life & Career > 3M Healthy Living. We are committed to helping you achieve your best health. Incentives for participating in a wellness program are available to all employees. If you think you might be unable to meet a standard for receiving a discount on your 2016 premiums under this wellness program, you might qualify for an opportunity to earn the same incentive by different means. Contact JourneyWell at (877) and we will work with you (and, if you wish, with your doctor) to find a wellness program with the same incentive that is right for you in light of your health status. *Employees covered under a 3M Medical Plan were eligible to earn $40 per month - up to $480 a year - off their M Medical Plan premium for completing program requirements. The program was available to employees participating in one of the following 3M Medical Plans: Basic PPO Plan (BCBS), Basic PPO Plan (HealthPartners), Prime Advantage Plan, Choice Advantage Plan and 3M HMSA Preferred Provider Plan (Hawaii).
2 Featured News The Power of Gratitude Did you know that gratitude is good for our bodies, spirits and relationships? Appreciating the simple, daily pleasures in life can improve our mood, general outlook and sense of connection to others. Research by Robert Emmons, the leading researcher on the science of gratitude, shows that gratitude is also good for our physical wellbeing. Emmons work shows that people who consistently practice gratitude tend to have stronger immune systems, lower blood pressure and fewer aches and pains and they are apt to exercise more and sleep better. Given these powerful benefits, why not add cultivating gratitude to your tool box of stress management skills? Here are some ideas for cultivating gratitude in your daily life: Pause throughout your day: notice what is going well and what you appreciate. Keep a gratitude journal where each day you list the things you appreciate. Maybe it was a good meal, a beautiful sunset or time spent laughing with a friend. Create family rituals such as having each family member at dinner or bedtime identify something good that happened each day. Express your appreciation. Let someone know that you appreciate their help and how they impacted your life. For more information about using gratitude and other stress management techniques, contact the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) professional who serves your location or call 3M EAP at (877) (toll free). 3M EAP is one of 3M s Healthy Living resources.
3 Information Bits Quick Quiz Which of the following can boost your metabolic rate? A high-fat diet A high-carbohydrate diet A high-protein diet None of the above [Answer: A high-protein diet! Studies show that the body requires more energy to process a high-protein diet, which means that as your body digests high-protein foods, your metabolic rate rises.] (Source: WebMD) Fitness Fact Key Components of Fitness Fitness is often misunderstood and oversimplified. In fact, we can think of fitness consisting of five key components. You might be strong in one component and weak in another. Stop by one of the onsite fitness centers and speak with a health fitness professional about scheduling a full fitness assessment of your key components of fitness. You can learn more about your level of fitness plus, take a moment to think about how all five of the following factors promote optimum health and prevent the onset of disease and other problems associated with physical inactivity: Cardiorespiratory fitness your body s ability to supply oxygen to muscles for energy production Muscular strength the maximum amount of force a muscle can exert against an opposing force Muscular endurance the ability of the muscle to work over an extended period of time without fatigue Flexibility the ability to move a body part through a full range of motion at a joint Body composition the ratio of body fat to lean body mass. (Source: move.va.gov) Did You Know Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or electronic nicotine delivery systems) are now widely available online and in retail outlets in many countries across the world. Although the overall harm of using e-cigarettes (vaping) seems to be less than smoking cigarettes, the lack of undesired secondary effects is questionable. For instance, in addition of highly addictive nicotine delivered directly into the lungs, e-cigarettes contain propylene glycol. Thermal degradation of propylene glycol can generate propylene oxide, which is classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a possible carcinogen. Moreover, Public health experts are concerned that e-cigarettes may perpetuate use of tobacco products among those who otherwise might attempt to and successfully quit. In fact, many e-cigarette users are dual users. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed a new rule in April 2014 which extended the agency s tobacco authority to cover additional tobacco products including e-cigarettes. The proposal bans e-cigarette sales to minors and requires the placement of warning labels in e-cigarette packages.
