As he recalls it, Mr. D Ferrell tells of a trip through Texas, beginning when he was 19 and ending when he was 21. Mr Ferrell is now 84 years of age. He left his home in Tennessee in March, riding horseback to Lebanon, Tenn. where he took the first steam car he had ever seen. He landed in New Orleans, took a boat and crossed the Mississippi river. He went by train to Burnswick Bay, where he boarded a ship and crossed the Gulf of Mexico, landing at Galveston, Texas. He then boarded another train for Columbus (Texas). Mr Ferrell, on this trip saw as many as forty deer in one herd. He walked all of one day, spending the night with Tom Guin, then drove a team three hundred miles to the northern part of West Texas. Mr Ferrell relates that he drove forty miles without seeing a person or a horse. He camped at a settlement on Placon Bayou, remaining there for three weeks. One morning, he decided to go on a turkey hunt. He found, instead of turkeys, a wolf. Following the wolf, he discovered an Indian camp and hastily returned to his own camp. He did not return to that place to hunt again. His first work was at a saw mill. Then a widow hired him to hunt some horses. With his partner, he set out. They slept beneath the trees and one morning they awoke to find a large turkey gobbler in the branches of the oak tree overhead, but they could not shoot for fear of alarming the Indians. After some time Mr Ferrell returned to Comanche, a town where he hired on a saw mill and worked one year. He recalls working three months for a horse, which he sold for 70 dollars. Then he went to the home of an uncle in Texas. In this part of the country they were making crops with cattle. His uncle had two farms in Jackson County, but unfriendly Indians made it unsafe to go to these. Marquis married Sophia Elizabeth Holley daughter of John S Holly and
