SUPPORT FOR TOBACCO-FREE

Campuses Are Worksites Too! As of July 1, 2017, there were at least 1, % smoke- or tobacco-free campuses with no exemptions (ANRF, 2017). Of these, 1,611 were 100% tobacco-free and 1,504 prohibit e-cigarettes.
LOOK HOW FAR WE HAVE COME ON CAMPUSES Let s do the same with ALL worksites. Join the tobacco-free movement!
IMPLEMENTATION TIMELINE

MODEL TOBACCO-FREE POLICIES

THE 3-T S APPROACH Tell Treat Train Hahn EJ, Fallin A, Darville A, Kercsmar SE, McCann M, Record RA. (2012) The three Ts of adopting tobacco-free policies on college campuses. Nursing Clinics of North America, 47 :
3-Ts: TELL Communication of the tobacco-free policy should occur at multiple levels including signage, advertisements, and integrating the message into all worksite events/materials.

Follow us on Like us on Facebook

Consider others you may want to communicate with.
3-Ts: TREAT Without any support, only about 4-7% of cessation attempts will be successful. Free nicotine replacement products and a menu of group and individual counseling options should be offered to employees.
SUCCESS OF TOBACCO TREATMENT
Figure 1. Request for Tobacco Treatment and NRT Coupons Redeemed Pre- and Post Tobacco-free Policy Note. Pre-policy, 11/08-11/09. Post-policy, 10/09-09/11 4-fold increase in quit attempts. An average of 3 enrolled in cessation programs per month before to 11 after the policy. 4-fold increase in treatment utilization. An average of 10 NRT coupons redeemed per month before to 41 after the policy. Only 1.4-fold increase in cost per 2-week NRT coupon. An average of $ per month before to $ per month after the policy. Lower cost per NRT coupon negotiated by UK Pharmacy after policy took effect. $47.60 per coupon before to $17.15 after the policy.

HOW MIGHT YOU MAXIMIZE RESOURCES?
3-Ts: TRAIN Empower administrators, faculty, and student leaders to remind violators of the policy and report if necessary using firm, yet compassionate scripting.
Importance of Compliance Efforts Enforcement efforts on smoke- and tobacco-free campuses present an ongoing challenge (Plaspohl et al., 2012). Without clear messaging, consistency, and consequence, the intent behind such policies has little effect on outcomes (Plaspohl et al., 2012).

COMPLIANCE IS EVERYONE S BUSINESS! Tobacco-free Take Action! is a team of employees and students who are committed to improving compliance with our tobacco-free policy. Ickes, M.J., Hahn, E.J., McCann, M., & Kercsmar, S. (2013). Tobacco-free Take Action! Increasing policy adherence on a college campus. World Medical and Health Policy, 5(1),
Importance of Scripting Making sure the same language is being used with employees, patients, and visitors about the policy ensures a firm, polite, and compassionate message.
Scripting example Response: Hello, my name is, and I am a(n) (state your title) at XYZ. Are you aware that our worksite is tobacco-free? I ask you to please respect others and put your cigarette out (or other tobacco product) and dispose of it in a trash can. Violator: Okay (puts it out) Response: Thank you. We have low-cost ways of helping you quit when you are ready. (Can also give them a TF information card)
Role Play Situation: You see two grounds crew employees standing in the parking lot while taking a break. One is smoking a cigarette and the other is using smokeless tobacco. Practice scripting The one individual approached grunts at you that this is his place of employment, he should be able to do what he wants. He reluctantly complies. How would you end your conversation?
COMPLIANCE IS EVERYONE S BUSINESS Report violators of the tobacco-free policy to: ReportTFviolation@uky.edu OR submit via the online form on our website
ONLINE VIOLATION REPORT FORM
HOW WILL YOU HANDLE COMPLIANCE & ENFORCEMENT?
EVALUATION EFFORTS

TOBACCO USE & ATTITUDES
Tobacco Use: Impact of Tobacco-free Executive Order
Cigarette Butts The Tobacco-free Compliance Assessment Tool (Fallin et al., 2013) Cigarette butts collected on three subsequent days at the same time each day Hot spot locations visited in the same order Boundaries recorded to be consistent each time
OBSERVED VIOLATORS
HELP WITH SUCCESS! Allow cessation classes to be held on the clock Reimburse employee for successful completion of cessation class Invite employees with tobacco using spouses, family, friends to participate in cessation class Provide NRT to employees for a set number of week if enrolled in cessation class. Reimburse employees for fitness efforts to assist quitting Gift card after completing class or quitting Additional paid time off Public recognition at staff meetings or office celebration to support quit attempts
WHAT CAN WORKSITES DO TO SUPPORT A SMOKE-FREE ORDINANCE IN YOUR COMMUNITY?

YOUR WORKSITE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE Add smoke-free workplace ordinance to your Community Outreach Plan Become a visible member of a local smoke-free coalition Host a forum on the benefits of smoke-free policy Sign a resolution or letter of support for smoke-free policy Use marketing dollars or outreach efforts to educate on the dangers of secondhand smoke and the benefits of smoke-free laws as the solution
