4 Impact of Tobacco in LA 13.8 Million packs of cigarejes bought or smoke by kids in Louisiana each year. 294,000 kids exposed to second hand smoke at home. Smoking costs more than $1.47 billion each year in direct medical costs. Each year Louisiana spends $663 million in Medicaid funds to treat tobacco related illnesses. 11 What are Our Goals? To provide community educa9on on the dangers of tobacco use. Raise awareness about the free cessa9on services available in Louisiana. Stay in compliance with state law RS40: (Act 815) & RS 17:

12 Louisiana Law: RS40: (ACT 815) What does this mean for my school? The Louisiana Smoke- Free Air Act (Act 815) is a statewide law that prohibits smoking in most workplaces and public places, including primary and secondary schools (pre- K through 12th grade). Schools in Louisiana with grades pre- K through 12th must prohibit smoking on school property, including buildings, grounds (outdoor and off campus school ac9vi9es) and buses. Policies of this sort are generally referred to as 100% smoke- free policies. Fines for Individuals are up to $100 and for employers up to $

13 Louisiana Law: RS17: 240 Provides provisions for the prohibi9on of tobacco in Louisiana schools (K- 12). It also prohibits smoking on any school bus transpor9ng children. Schools in Louisiana (K- 12) must prohibit any person from carrying or using a lighted cigar, cigareje, pipe, or any other form of smoking objects on its grounds. The Board of Secondary and Elementary Educa9on were responsible for rules, regula9ons, and penal9es pursuant to this law. Superintendents or their designee are responsible for enforcement. 13

14 How can you help? Post Quit Line Materials around school to promote cessa9on for students as well as staff & faculty. Support the Implementa9on of a strong Tobacco- Free school board policy. Raise awareness with parents about the school board policy and Louisiana s Smoke- Free Air laws. Encourage coaches to implement a Tobacco- Free policy for their teams.
