Creating a Carbon Neutral IMPACT Why does it matter? What is it? How did we achieve it?
Why Does it Matter?
What is Carbon Neutral? 2. Reduce Direct Emissions Behaviour (energy use) Purchasing Infrastructure 1. Understand Your Emissions Utilities Fuel Travel Paper Shipping Packaging Commuting Waste 3. Offset the Balance (with high quality carbon credits) Report Publicly 4. You re Carbon Neutral (net zero emissions)
Understanding IMPACT Understand Engage Reduce Offset
IMPACT s Footprint Carbon Footprint Analysis Total Emissions (tco 2 e) kgco 2 e per delegate Analysis Total emissions for the Impact - Sustainability, Travel & Tourism conference came to 24.4 tco₂e, with average emissions per delegate of 0.19 tco₂e. Impact has arranged for all emissions to be offset, resulting in a net-zero emissions event. 77 Barrels of Oil 6.5 Cars per Year 0.02 Hotels per Year tco 2 e (Total) 24.4
Carbon Footprint (By Activity) Emissions by Activity (tco 2 e) Electricity 0.5% Accomodation 13.5% Service Calls 0.0% Waste 0.3% Water 0.1% Paper 0.1% Travel 85.5% Scope 1 Scope 2 Scope 3
Paper Paper (kg) % PCR % Stationery Paper Products 0.1 kg per delegate Analysis Stationery required for IMPACT was copy paper used during planning and execution of the event. All printing was made from 100% post consumer materials. Well done! Paper products recorded for the Victoria Conference Center included paper towel and toilet paper. These products both have a PCR content of 88%, bringing the total PCR content to 96%. Treeless Content 96% tco 2 e 0.03 % of Total 0.1% 0.0 Trees Used
Waste Waste (kg) % Diversion Rate Recycling Organics Landfill 2.69 kg per delegate Analysis Waste at the Victoria Conference Center translated to a total of 0.08 tco₂e for the IMPACT conference, or 2.68 kgco₂e per delegate. This is the third largest contributor to overall emissions. The diversion rate at VCC is quite low at just 64%. IMPACT should strive to lead the way during their event and aim to increase this rate to 80% during the conference. * VCC waste data for 2017 was not yet available, so 2016 data was used tco 2 e 0.3% kg / Delegate 0.08 % of Total 64.3% Diversion Rate
Accommodation Accomodation Room nights Analysis The number of room nights for the Impact conference was caluclated using 3 nights per out of town delegate, with an additional night for each out of town PIA tour guest. Total emissions came to 3.3 tco₂e, or 0.02 tco₂e per delegate, and at 17% is the second highest contributor to overall emissions. 0.0 Accommodation tco₂e / Delegate 0.02 tco 2 e 3.3 % of Total 13.5% 264 Room Nights
Travel Total Emissions Total Emissions (tco₂e) Flights Ferries Ground Transit 20.9 Travel by Type Ground Transit 8% Ferries 2% Flights 90% kgco 2 e/km 0.11 Analysis (Breakdown) Travel to and from the Impact conference is the largest contributor to total emissions. At 20.9 tco₂e, this represents 85.5% of emissions. Travel was calculated by assuming all Vancouver Island delegates were assumed to drive, and all Vancouver and Whistler delegates were assumed to drive with a ferry trip. Remaining delgates were assumed to fly direct from the airport nearest to their city stated on registration. Total Distance Traveled (km) 186,043 kgco₂e/ Delegate 151 tco 2 e / Delegate 0.15 tco 2 e 20.9 % of Total 85.5% 5.5 Cars / Year
