8 Why do Social Norms Work? Conformity to group expectations and standards is fundamental to social cohesion and cooperation. Conformity is a protective adaptation for social survival. It is innate, unconscious, and powerful. Michael Haines 2016

12 Social Norms Premises Every functioning social system has health positive social norms. (a majority who hold pro-social attitudes and/or practice protective behaviors). Healthy norms are often misperceived. (Problems are over estimated and solutions are under estimated) Michael Haines 2016

14 Preventing Alcohol Related Harm on Campus Social Norms Approach: 1. 57% of students drank 5 or fewer drinks per drinking occasion. 2. Moderate drinking was the norm but heavy drinking was the perceived norm. 3. Moderate drinking and abstinence was negatively associated with physical injury to self or others. 4.
