3 Fact or Fic&on? You need to limit the amount of tuna you eat 3
4 Fic&on! Tuna is safe. For the general population, there is no limit on the amount or kinds of Fish to eat Research supports the benefits of eating seafood, including tuna - yet less than 25% meet the recommendations for seafood intake and consumption continues to drop. Dietary intake of seafood (including tuna) is associated with a reduced risk of primary cardiac arrest, stroke, high blood pressure and can help lower triglyceride levels. Moderate evidence shows that consumption of about 8 ounces per week of a variety of seafood, which provide an average consumption of 250 mg/ day of EPA and DHA, is associated with reduced cardiac deaths among individuals with and without pre- existing cardiovascular disease. 4

6 Fic$on! 2004 FDA/EPA Dietary Advice for Women who are pregnant, might become pregnant, breastfeeding and young children Fish and shell;ish contain high- quality protein and other essential nutrients, are low in saturated fat, and contain Omega- 3 fatty acids. A well- balanced diet that included a variety of ;ish can contribute to heart health and children s proper growth and development. Eat up to 12 oz per week of a variety of ;ish and shell;ish, including up to 6 ounces of Albacore Tuna a week. Avoid shark, sword;ish, king mackerel and tile ;ish. What was heard It s confusing and better to be safe than sorry! Fish intake, all intake, dropped signi;icantly. 6
7 Signi-icant, growing body of evidence to support the bene-its of a higher intake of Omega- 3 fatty acids from marine sources during pregnancy and while breastfeeding Moderate evidence indicates that intake of Omega- 3 fatty acids from at least 8 ounces of seafood per week is associated with improved infant health outcomes, such as visual and cognitive development. Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010 Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) Mothers who eat the most seafood during pregnancy - - more than 12 ounces per week - - have children with the highest developmental outcomes. Joseph R. Hibbeln, et al. National Institute of Health, The Lancet, ,000 Danish mother/child pairs followed: Highest ;ish intake = 25% more likely highest developmental scores at 6 months and 30% more likely at 18 months compared to lowest ;ish intake. Am J Clin Nutr, 2008 Seychelles Islands Child Development Study. Followed Mother/Child pairs over 17 years (Seafood consumption is 10X the US). Higher serum prenatal n- 3 PUFA levels were associated with higher verbal language skills and no evidence of harm from methylmercury. (NeuroToxicology, 2011 & J Nutr 2012) 7
