2 GOALS andobjectives The healthy benefits of the Mediterranean Diet continue to be a focus of international interest, with a constant supply of more in depth knowledge based on scientific evidence. A principal aim of the V Congress is to provide updated information on new aspects of diet quality, food and nutrient synergy and novel technologies and their impact on the main pathologies affecting modern society. Communicating the health benefits and cultural heritage of the Mediterranean Diet constitutes another key role of the V Congress. Knowledge isn t enough. Policies must be implemented that assure the sustenance and promotion of this valuable legacy. Efforts should address not only the dissemination of scientifically based health information and unequalled gastronomic qualities of the Mediterranean Diet, but also how to create supportive environments to ensure its permanence, ranging from community based efforts to government initiatives. Also, the research on determinants that favour compliance with Mediterranean Diet patterns at family and institutional levels may provide better and more effective interventions to guarantee its continuity and survival. The inclusion of oral communications (posters) in this V Congress aims to enhance such efforts. Being aware of a variety of activities addressing diverse aspects of the Mediterranean Diet will enrich and stimulate Congress participants to build networks and share valuable experience with the goal of enhancing the global undertaking of promoting and maintaining the healthy and appetizing Mediterranean Diet.
