The Weight Loss Dilemma: Evidence-Based Use of Dietary Supplements Stephen Holt M.D., LLD(Hon), MRCP(UK), FRCP(C), FACG, FACP, FACN, FACAM
SUPER-SIZING AMERICA Americans exude complacency about their overweight status Obesity is part of a metabolic syndrome Syndrome X is under diagnosed and often mistreated by conventional and integrative medicine
Accepted Facts About Weight Control There is not a diet described in the history of medicine that has resulted in sustained weight control Atkins Diet Revolution was a step in the right direction, but Robert Atkins was addressing the important issues of insulin resistance and the Metabolic Syndrome X with its excessive morbidity and mortality Atkins was not preoccupied with cosmetic issues
Accepted Facts About Weight Control Weight control programs must involve calorie controlled diets, behavior modification, exercise, and adjucntive therapies eg evidence based dietary supplements or drugs Regulations do not permit stand-alone weight loss claims for dietary supplements
Evidence Base For Weight Control With Dietary Supplements Ephedra was effective for weight control, but it had dangerous side effects when misused. Some people who took Ephedra had CVS and stroke risk, probably as a consequence of the presence of the Metabolic Syndrome X. The industry is cutting the fat from many weight loss claims which must be evidence based.

CARDINAL FEATURES OF SYNDROME X Abdominal Obesity. Waist M > 100, F > 88cm Hypertriglyceridemia > 150mg/dL Low HDL, M < 40mg/dL, F < 50 mg/dl Hypertension > 130/85 mmhg High fasting blood glucose > 110mg/dL
REDEFINING SYNDROME X Classic Definition: Obesity, Hypercholesterolemia, High Blood Pressure, Linked by Insulin Resistance. Syndrome X, Y and Z.., an expanded definition incorporating a novel unifying concept of common diseases
SYNDROME X,Y AND Z S.Holt MD expanded Reaven s concept to Syndrome X,Y and Z to define the global health threat of Syndrome X which causes : Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes Mellitus, Thrombosis, Female Endocrine Disorders, Acne, Infertility (PCOS), Impaired Immunity, Inflammation and Cancer etc. STUDIES DESCRIBE MANY DISEASES ASSOCIATED WITH SYNDROME X

CONCLUSION Weight control is a serious public health initiative. Hoodia gordonii will ignite the industry in Low carb diets interventions alone invariably fail. Low carb diets require facilitation with lifestyle change, modification and the right supplements, with a primary focus on overcoming insulin resistance in many but not all people. Calorie control, key step, HOODIA SUPREME.
