1 Volume 13, Issue 12 December 2018 It is important to keep the foods in the Emergency Diet Plan on hand, incase a disaster strikes our area and/or dialysis is unavailable. You will need to follow this Emergency Diet to keep your potassium and fluid down until dialysis becomes available. Fluids: limit 2 cups per day -Choose shelf-stable almond or rice milk -Limit milk products to ½ cup per day -Avoid dark colas Protein: limit meat to 2-3 ounces per day (7g protein=1 ounce) -Use canned, slat-free such as chicken, turkey, tuna, shrimp, crab, or salmon (check for potassium in low sodium/no salt added options) -2 Tbsp peanut butter=1 ounce of peanut butter Fruits: limit two 1/2 cup servings per day (no dried fruit) -Choose Fresh Fruit: apples, grapes, pears -Choose Canned fruits: applesauce, fruit cocktail, pears Vegetables: limit two 1/2 cup servings per day -Choose NO SALT ADDED canned vegetables like cabbage, carrots, corn, green beans, green peas Grains: 4-6 servings per day -1 serving=1 slice bread, 1/2 cup cooked pasta, 1 cup cold cereal, or 1/2 cup cooked hot cereal) - Dry cereal: Corn flakes, Crispix, Kix, Puffed Rice, cream of rice, grits - Pasta or white rice - White bread or dinner roll, English muffin, or bagels - Unsalted crackers Fats: Six or more teaspoons per day. -Use salt-free salad dressing, margarine, oils, and mayonnaise. 4 Ingredients 1/2 cup softened unsalted butter 1 cup brown sugar, packed 1 medium egg 1/4 cup almond milk 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, sifted 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar 15 large gumdrops, chopped Gumdrop Christmas Cookies Recipe makes 50 cookies Nutrients for 2 cookies serving: Directions Calories 104kcal 1. Preheat oven to 400 F Fat 1g 2. Cream butter, sugar and egg Carbohydrates 22g thoroughly Protein 1g 3. Stir in milk and vanilla Sodium 9mg 4. In a separate bowl, mix flour Potassium 29mg with baking soda and cream Phosphorus 16 mg of tartar, add to above Calcium 13mg ingredients 5. Mix in gumdrops and chill dough for at least one hour 6. Drop dough using a tablespoon onto greased cookie sheet 7. Bake 8-10 minutes until golden brown. Recipe adapted from Georgia Council on Renal Nutrition Ingredients 1, 64 fl oz bottle cranberry juice 1, 64 fl oz bottle pineapple juice 1 frozen lemonade from concentrate 4 cups water 1, 2 Liter bottle ginger ale Directions 1. Mix all ingredients together 2. Chill 3. 6 Tips to Keep Moving this Winter It s the time of year we move in doors, try to keep moving. Aerobics make great a great living room exercise routine. Exercise has multiple health benefits including: Controlling body weight Improving blood sugar control Increasing strength Reducing risk of falls Improving mood and sleep Use these tips to get started: 1. Talk to your doctor Your doctor will make sure starting an exercise program is safe for you. 2. Start at your own pace Start with a short amount of time and/or low intensity routine. As little as five to ten minutes have health benefits. Three, 10 minute bouts of exercise have the same health benefits as one 30 minute session. Start with chair/bed exercises and increase activity as ability/stamina improves. Don t over do it too quickly, talk with your doctor on what routine may be best for you. 3. Find activities you like If you like to exercise with others, consider walking with a friend. If you prefer to be at home, ride your stationary bike while you read a book or watch TV. If you prefer swimming find a local class that works with your availability. 4. Make small lifestyle changes Making small lifestyle changes will help you live a more active life without even stepping foot in a gym. Try: set your alarm across the room in the morning, stand during TV commercials, keep the remote by the TV set so you need to get up to change the channels, park further away at the grocery store, take the stairs. 5. During Winter Storms and Extreme Cold: Stay indoors and dress warmly Walk carefully on snowy and ice Limit your time outside. Frostbite action: go to a warm room, soak in warm water, use body heat to warm, do not massage or use a heating pad. Hypothermia signs: shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech, and drowsiness. Hypothermia action: go to a warm room, warm the center of the body first chest, neck, head, and groin. Keep dry and wrapped up in warm blankets, including the head and neck. If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55o F. Drive only if it is absolutely necessary. If you must drive: travel in the day, don t travel alone, keep others informed of your schedule, stay on main roads, and avoid backroads. Let someone know your destination, your route, and when you expect to arrive. Create an emergency supply kit for your car: jumper cables, sand, a flashlight, warm clothes, blankets, bottled water, non-perishable snacks.
