1 Hua Fei Hua (A Flower in the Haze) by Tristen Wang Hua Fei Hua (A Flower in the Haze) is a four minute long Choral piece accompanied by an electronically produced track I decided to compose an electronic piece because I felt that the emotions and meaning of the music can be expressed more precisely since I can create and use all kinds of sounds Composing and performing an electronic piece with the choir is also unusual so that will be very unique to the ISCMS in 2016 The lyrics are based off the famous Chinese poem written by Bai Juyi The poem does not have a definite meaning because it is meant to be abstract and perceived differently by people themselves Chinese poetry has a history of having a wide room of interpreting, so there are a lot of uncertainties left to be decided by the readers themselves From my interpretation, the poem is set between midnight and early morning with a melancholy and gloomy atmosphere The moon shines bright upon the cloudy sky at midnight and the poet is just mystified by the strange emotion he had towards the moon By the next morning, the emotion stayed with the poet and left him feeling dreamy which resulted in him writing this poem My piece is split into two main sections The first section introduces the setting of the poem and is in a minor tonality to bring out the melancholy atmosphere The Sopranos and the Tenors will be singing the melody of this section while the Altos and Basses support them with long held notes and short notes The second section portrays the emotions felt by the poet by gazing at the moon It is mainly in a major tonality with minor inflections to show the mysteriousness of the poet s feelings The Altos and Basses for this section will now be sing the melody The Sopranos and Tenors will be supporting them this time Original Poem: hua fei hua wu fei wu 雾雾 ye ban lai, tian ming qu 来 lai ru chun meng ji duo shi, 来梦几时 qu shi chao yun wu mi chu 觅处 Translation: In bloom, she s not a flower Hazy, she is not a haze She comes out at midnight hour, she goes with starry rays She comes like vernal dreams that cannot stay And goes like morning clouds that melt away
