3 natural recipes for healthy dogs Here are some other recipes for you to consider including in your pet s diet. Where necessary add water to cook rice and mix. These recipes are from Dr Barbara Fougere s The Pet Lovers Guide to Natural Healing for Cats and Dogs, available from the CIVT book shop. We encourage a diet based on wholefoods and real foods! 3
4 mutley muesli breakfast for dogs Apple Sunflower oil Nutritional yeast Oats rolled, cooked Natural yoghurt Egg raw 1 average, grated 1/4 tbs 1/4 tbs 50 grams 1 average Mix all together and serve (can be divided into 2 or 3 serves). This recipe provides 360 calories (you can replace of dry food, 7oz of canned food, or 1/3 of any of the homemade recipes). It provides 15 per cent protein, 35 per cent fat and 46 per cent carbohydrate contributions to energy. It is not complete and balanced, but provides a nutritious breakfast two to three times weekly. 4
5 chicken & rice recovery Rice, white, raw (then cook) Chicken breast, raw, lean, skinless Chicken liver 2/3 cup 4 halves 1oz Cook chicken liver and rice together, and poach chicken lightly. Mix recipe together and divide into several small meals. Energy from protein 44 per cent, fat 13 per cent, carbohydrate 40 per cent calories This diet is for short-term use only because it is not complete or balanced. It is designed for times when a bland diet is required and, because of the very low fat content, it is suitable for short-term use with diarrhoea. 5
6 doggy dinner loaf chicken, beef or fish Rice (brown or white), raw Water Pasta (wholemeal or plain), dry Oats rolled, raw Eggs, raw Flour, wholemeal Calcium carbonate 1 litre 4 average 1.5 tsp Cook rice in boiling water, add potato, sweet potato and pumpkin and pasta and cook for further fifteen minutes. Add remaining, choosing the fish, beef or chicken. The mixture should be moist but firm, add more oats if necessary. Place mixture in oiled loaf tin for up to one hour at 180 degrees. Remove loaf from the tin, and place in oven for further ten to fifteen minutes to set. Vegetables: Potato, raw chopped 1 average Sweet potato, raw chopped Carrot, raw grated 1/4 cup Pumpkin, raw chopped Spinach or silver beet, raw and Chicken, raw, with skin 14oz plus chicken liver 3.5oz or Beef mince, regular, raw 2 cups plus 3.5oz liver or Fish, raw 14oz plus olive oil 2 Divide the loaf into: 6 slices of 500 calories 10 slices of 300 calories 20 slices of 150 calories Energy from protein 25 per cent, fat 35 per cent, carbohydrate 39 per cent. 6
7 chicken wing dinner beef & potatoes Rice, white, raw Chicken wings Vegetables Oil, sunflower Chicken liver Chicken lean, raw 2 average 1/2 tbs 25 g 80 g Hamburger mince, raw Beef, raw, lean Vegetables Oil, sunflower Liver Calcium carbonate Potatoes 3/4 cup 1/4 tbs 1oz 1.5 tsp 3 medium Cook chicken meat (remove bones), liver and rice together and vegetables. Add oil when cooled. You can also leave the wings raw and feed separately. Energy from protein 28 per cent, fat 38 per cent, carbohydrate 34 per cent calories (complete and balanced but high in calcium and phosphorus so should be given a maximum of three times a week). Cook all but oil together, cool then add oil. Energy from protein 40 per cent, fat 39 per cent, carbohydrate 21 per cent. Calories
8 lamb crockpot Rice, white, raw Vegetables Oil, sunflower Lamb liver Lamb tongue, raw Lamb kidney Lamb heart Bone-meal 1/4 tbs 1oz 2 average 2 average 1 average 1.5 tsp Cook all but oil in a pot on a slow heat. Alternatively cook rice and leave the rest raw. Energy from protein 30 per cent, fat 35 per cent and carbohydrate 33 per cent. Calories
9 doggy oat surprise cookies (your dog will be surprised because there s no meat but they still taste delicious!) Oats, rolled, raw Wheat bran or rice bran Olive oil Wholemeal flour Sunflower seed Sesame seed Yeast Salt Egg, raw Milk 1.5 cup 1 tbs two pinches 1 average In a large bowl, combine all, mixing thoroughly. Sunflower and sesame seeds should be lightly crushed to aid digestion. Form into 40 large balls, or 60 medium balls or 80 small balls, depending on the size of your pet, and flatten them on a baking tray. Bake in a medium oven for 40 to 50 minutes, depending on the size of the biscuits. Energy from protein 12 per cent, fat 62 per cent, carbohydrate 24 per cent. Large pet: 40 biscuits each have 100 calories. Medium pet: 60 biscuits each have 70 calories. Small pet: 80 biscuits each have 50 calories. Best for multi-pet homes. Halve recipe for single-pet homes. These are high fat biscuits designed for travelling purposes, or when you want to provide a quick snack, and they should be fed sparingly. They are not complete and balanced. Store in an airtight container. 9
10 soups for pets Broths are useful for many pets. They are good when your pet s appetite is poor, in warm weather, or when you need to feed lightly for a couple of days. They are also good meal substitutes for pets which are overweight, as part of a weight loss program, and can be used for modified fasting too. Here are some recipes for you to try... lamb broth Lamb, raw, lean Water Carrot, raw, grated, diced Barley, raw, pearl Parsley, raw 25 oz 2 litres 1/4 cup 1 tbs Cut up meat and place in pan. Cover with water and bring to boil. Simmer for 90 minutes then add barley and carrot and simmer for a further 60 minutes. Add parsley towards the end of cooking. Allow to cool, and remove any excess fat. Divide into several meals over 1 to 2 days. This recipe provides 1000 calories, energy from protein is 62 per cent, fat 22 per cent and carbohydrate 14 per cent, and is excellent following surgery, where appetite is poor and protein needs are high. 10
11 chicken soup Chicken breasts, raw, diced 2 Barley, pearl, raw Olive oil 1/4 tbs Chicken liver 2oz Carrot, raw, finely chopped or grated Egg, raw 1 average Water 1 litre chicken broth Chicken lean Water Salt Carrot, raw, grated Celery, raw, grated Rice, white, raw, dry 10oz 2 litres 1 pinch 2 sticks 1/4 cup Lightly fry chicken and liver in oil. Gradually add water to pan, and add barley and carrot. Once the barley is soft and cooked, turn heat down, and whisk in 1 egg. Cool broth. This provides approximately 1000 calories, and is designed to be fed in fuls to whole cupfuls every couple of hours. The energy supplied by protein is 33 per cent, fat 39 per cent and carbohydrate 25 per cent. The fluid can be given on day one, offering more liquid than energy, and then on day two the meaty broth mixture can be fed in several small meals. Place diced chicken in pan and cover with water, adding vegetables and rice. Cover and bring to boil, and then simmer for two hours, adding more water if necessary. Allow to cool and remove fat if there is any. Strain to remove solids and keep. Provide half cupfuls to whole cupfuls every couple of hours for a pet that has lost his appetite, or is recovering from tummy upsets. When there is improvement divide the meat, rice, vegetable mixture into several very small meals and gradually go onto solid foods again. This recipe supplies approximately 400 calories; energy from protein is 33 per cent, fat 13 per cent and carbohydrate 50 per cent. Fish or turkey can be substituted for chicken. 11
