Dear Friends, For ten years, it has been my great honor to work for the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Our mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of women and their families in Wisconsin and beyond. We, the UW Ob-Gyn faculty and staff, fulfill this mission in an environment of collaboration, humility, integrity and respect. As you will see in our 2017 annual update, our five outstanding clinical divisions General Ob-Gyn, Gynecology and Gynecologic Subspecialties, Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal- Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility provide state-of-the-art, patient-centered care for women throughout their lives. The newly launched Division of Reproductive and Population Health investigates innovative and practical solutions to the health issues that face women locally, nationally and globally. Our Reproductive Sciences Division conducts cutting edge research into the cellular and molecular functions of pregnancy in animal and human models. Advancing our field importantly includes training the physicians and scientists of the future, including medical students, residents, and fellows, as well as undergraduate and graduate students in related fields. What our department has accomplished in 2017 is truly remarkable. I hope you enjoy reading and learning more about our year of advancing women s healthcare via our integrated efforts. On Wisconsin! Dr. Laurel Rice Ben Miller Peckham, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health

Clinical Providing Exceptional Clinical Care Top 1% in the country Our gynecology program ranks #13 in the nation in U.S. News and World Report Best Hospitals rankings our 5th top-50 ranking in as many years. IVF success rates IVF success rates at Generations Fertility Care are consistently higher than national averages. In the last reporting year, Generations clocked in at nearly 9% higher than the national average. Pioneering precision medicine UW Gynecologic Oncologist Lisa Barroilhet, MD counsels patients with increased genetic risk of cancer at the UW Prevention, Assessment and Tailored Health Screening clinic. Extraordinary care across a lifespan General ob-gyns launched two new clinics to meet the needs of women at particular times in their lives: Kristen Sharp s Hope After Loss Clinic supports women experiencing pregnancy loss, and Makeba Williams Menopause Clinic helps women navigate mid-life changes.
Clinical Providing Exceptional Clinical Care Supporting women with PFDs Our Women s Pelvic Wellness Program 3 fellowship-trained urogynecologists, a fellowship-trained urologist, pelvic floor physical therapists, colorectal surgeons, and gastroenterologists now see patients five days a week. This year, our providers took more than 3,000 clinic visits and performed more than 550 urogynecology surgeries. Building a community of Dane County moms CenteringPregnancy group prenatal care builds a supportive community of peers and medical providers for pregnant women. UW Ob-Gyn now facilitates the CenteringPregnancy program at two clinical locations in Madison. Since 2016, 93 women have joined 14 Centering groups! Better cancer care across the region Our Division of Gynecologic Oncology established a clinical outreach program at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford, IL to help improve clinical care for gynecologic cancer patients in the region.
Research Advancing Cutting Edge Research Ten years of health disparities innovation The Health Disparities Research Scholars Fellowship has trained 21 scholars since it started, and its institutional training grant (T32) from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development was renewed, supporting the program through Women helping women with tissue donation Our Institutional Review Board-approved tissue bank collected 32 specimens of obstetric tissues and fluids in , 52% more than last year. These provide a valuable research resource for investigators in Ob-Gyn and other UW-Madison departments. Mind over matter Heidi Brown, MD, of the Division of Gynecology & Gynecologic Subspecialties, launched a study to test effectiveness of the Mind Over Matter curriculum in 120 Wisconsin women with urinary and fecal incontinence. Seeing placenta from a new angle UW Ob-Gyn investigators enrolled their first subjects in a $4 million National Institute of Child Health and Human Development grant-funded project to develop new techniques for imaging the placenta, potentially providing an early warning system for pregnancy complications.
Research Advancing Cutting Edge Research Changing the landscape of women s health research In response to persistent gender and racial health disparities in Wisconsin and across the country, UW Ob-Gyn launched the Division of Reproductive and Population Health. This cross-disciplinary division pulls together 22 researchers from across UW-Madison to conduct research that informs health care, public health, and community-based strategies to improve reproductive and maternal child health. Helping new moms take control of hypertension Kara Hoppe, DO, of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, enrolled more than 100 patients in an ongoing study that helps new moms with hypertension monitor their blood pressure and other vitals from home. The women leave the hospital with a tablet and blood pressure cuff, and communicate daily with staff nurses. So far, the study has resulted in zero readmissions for hypertensionrelated issues.
Education Training Tomorrow s Leaders National leaders in rural healthcare In order to address the growing crisis in rural healthcare, UW Ob-Gyn created the first-in-the-nation rural ob-gyn residency track. 160 people applied to the program, and the Laura McDowell, MD, joined the department as the first-ever rural ob-gyn resident in June Unique resident research experiences Our redesigned resident research program gives residents an opportunity to pursue unique clinical and translational research projects. In 2017, UW Ob-Gyn residents presented original research at the ACOG Clinical Meeting, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine Scientific Congress, and more. Competitive residency program Our Residency Program has become more competitive over the past five years, improving in terms of CREOG scores, board examination pass rates, and volume of applicants. Exceptional training for basic science researchers Ob-Gyn trainees in the UW Endocrinology and Reproductive Physiology Program received national recognition in 2017, including a Pfizer President s Presenter Award from the Society for Reproductive Investigation (SRI) and scholarships to attend the SRI conference.
Education Training Tomorrow s Leaders Successful futures for 2017 grads The UW Ob-Gyn Class of 2017 left their residency exceptionally well-prepared for future success. Graduates went on to fellowships at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Washington University, and the University of Michigan; academic medicine positions at the University of Iowa and UW-Madison; and successful private practice in Madison. Nationally-known subspecialty program The UW Ob-Gyn gynecologic oncology fellowship and maternal-fetal medicine fellowship tracks remain highly sought-after. More than 130 people applied for two fellowship spots in 2017.
People Building a World-Class Team Welcome new physicians The UW Ob-Gyn faculty are leaders and experts in their fields. This year, we recruited six physicians: General Ob-Gyns Luther Gaston, Laura Jacques, Jennifer Karnowski; Gynecologic Oncologist Sumer Wallace; Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist Janine Rhoades; and Reproductive Endocrinology specialist Laura Cooney. New addition to reproductive sciences The Division of Reproductive Science recruited Irene Ong, PhD, to join the research faculty. Ehrenthal leads Population Health Deborah Ehrenthal, MD MPH, became Director of the newly launched Division of Reproductive and Population Health. Williams leads General Obstetrics & Gynecology Makeba Williams, MD, was appointed Director of the Division of General Obstetrics and Gynecology. Williams served as co-director of the division since 2016.
People Building a World-Class Team Stewarding UW Ob-Gyn s future Lily Johnson brings her significant fundraising and engagement expertise to the department as the new Director of Development. Internal leadership transitions Greg Bills, MD, assumed the role of Vice Chancellor for Clinical Operations. Dobie Giles, MD, became Vice Chair for Finance.
Community Encouraging Healthy Communities Improving HPV vaccination rates A quality improvement program led by Jacob Lauer, MD, of the Division of General Ob-Gyn makes it easy for postpartum women in the catch-up age group (through age 26) to access human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines. Women s health community outreach In 2016 and 2017, our faculty and clinicians engaged more than 3,100 community members at 12 free community events. These included our quarterly Healthy Women Community Talk series, Generations Fertility Care Community Talks, Facebook Live events and appearances as other community events. Connecting Wisconsin women to comprehensive contraception The LARC Task Force continued to spearhead local and statewide activities. Notably, Deborah Ehrenthal, MD and others were instrumental in the creation and launch of the Wisconsin Contraceptive Access Network (WI-CAN). WI-CAN is a network of diverse organizations and individuals committed to creating systems and policy change to improve contraceptive access in Wisconsin. WI-CAN s vision is that the full range of safe and effective contraceptive health care is available, affordable and accessible in Wisconsin. Record-setting Diaper Drive During the 2017 Diaper Drive, UW Ob-Gyn collected enough diapers and cash donations to distribute more than 20,000 diapers to community organizations around Madison.
Community Encouraging Healthy Communities Engaging community leaders Members of our Community Advisory Council meet quarterly to discuss and provide feedback on department research, outreach, and other programs. The council is comprised of community and organizational leaders from the Madison area. Committed to improving women s health worldwide We continue to expand and deepen our partnership with our colleagues in Hawassa, Ethiopia. Cynthia Anderson, MD, Dobie Giles, MD, and Nicholas Schmuhl, PhD traveled to Hawassa for a summit to plan the upcoming three to five years of academic and clinical partnership with Hawassa University (HU) and the Department of Ob-Gyn. The two institutions signed an official institutional MOU of collaboration this year, and together received a grant from the US- Ethiopian University Linkage Seed Grant Competition. The $15,000 seed grant will support a joint effort to develop a fellowship program to train more subspecialist ob-gyns in Ethiopia.
