Subject area: Science Teacher: David Klang Title of Lesson: Skeletal System Grade Level: 8 Time Needed: 2 days of 43 minutes State Core Objective: F.8.1 Understand the structure and function of cells, organs, tissues, organ systems, and whole organisms Goals: Students will identify the layers of bone. Students will identify the names of the bones of the skeletal system. Students will state the functions of the skeletal system. Objectives: Students will use prior knowledge to define vocabulary words associated with the skeletal system. Students will state 3 functions of the skeletal system. Students will differentiate between the layers of the bone. Students will describe ways to keep their bones healthy. Students will label the bones of the skeletal system. Methods: Pre-reading- Introduce unit with a video (65 seconds): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1abt50xxyk Brainstorm reasons why you think your bones are an important part of your body- list on the board Using Word Splash, students will be asked to use their prior knowledge in an attempt to define words pertaining to the skeleton system. Take pretest to determine students prior knowledge. Reading- Students will read and fill-in-the-blank notes pertaining to the skeleton system using information from the site: http://hes.ucfsd.org/gclaypo/skelweb/skel01.html#what Responding- A worksheet will be used to have students reflect on main ideas and information presented. Exploring- (Multiple levels based on ability) Using the following sites, the students will explore by using on-line diagrams and labeling the correct bone. http://hes.ucfsd.org/gclaypo/skelweb/hotpot/osteo01.html (more challenging) http://www.abcya.com/skeletal_system.htm (label bones and assemble a skeleton) http://www.dairy.edu.au/discoverdairy/teachers/games-interactives/build-a- Skeleton.aspx (On-line (skeleton with parts to identify)

Applying- Students will compile a list of potential ways that they can keep their bones healthy. Students will also cut apart the bones that make up the skeleton, attach the bones in the correct location, and label each bone correctly. Assessment Pre-reading- The Word Splash vocabulary activity and pretest will be collected to see how much the students already know about bone terminology and use that to determine areas that may need further clarification. During reading- We will assess students by the discussions/comments that are made during the group reading and note taking sections; assessment will also be done by observing students when completing the worksheet and by labeling the bones of the skeleton. Post-reading- Take post-test to see what knowledge students have gained. The list will be collected and graded to ensure students understanding of how they can keep their bones healthy and why this is important. Students will also cut apart the bones that make up the skeleton, attach the bones in the correct location, and label each bone correctly. Strategies used: videos, Word Splash, note taking, on-line games, pre and post tests, worksheet, skeleton paper doll
