Oaks North Community Center Center Office Hours: Monday - Thursday 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Friday 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM After 5:00 PM Hours are available by appointment Closed Saturday & Sunday 12578 Oaks North Dr. San Diego, CA 92128 858-487-0120 Labor Day Holiday Hours Monday September 3rd Pool and Fitness Center are open from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM The Locker Room will close promptly at 7:00 PM NO other rooms will be open Please Take Note of the New Hours 2018-2019 Board of Directors To Be Announced Following the Annual Meeting held on August 27, 2018 Board of Directors Meetings Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018 At 6:00 PM Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018 At 10:00 AM **In the Auditorium** OAKS NORTH COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION - CODE OF CONDUCT FOR DIRECTORS ADOPTED: May 16, 2018 WHEREAS, the Board of Directors of Oaks North Community Association ( Association ) has the power and fiduciary responsibility to make decisions for the entire community, and WHEREAS, the leaders of the Association are responsible to set a standard and a tone for behavior that is conducive to the best interests of the entire community, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Directors of the Oaks North Community Association hereby adopt the following code of conduct for the Board and Committee members. This policy is intended to provide guidance with ethical issues and a mechanism for addressing unethical conduct. (The entire policy is posted on the business bulletin board for review). It has been said that serving on a board of directors can be a thankless job, and as a result it is difficult to find members who wish to serve. It can also be very rewarding. Serving on a board without clearly adopted policies in place has proven to be a liability for ONCC, with increased legal costs. As a result, our current legal counsel recommended an updated version of this policy. In the world of Common Interest Developments, it is no secret that the unsanctioned or unapproved actions of one board member who violates corporate policies will in fact cause the remaining board members to seek legal counsel for the protection of the entire association and its staff. The document is used to set a tone for meetings and daily operations under the advisement of legal counsel. In addition, nowhere in the document does it state that board members are not permitted to work with the General Manager. It does state that the GM works primarily with the President. The GM works for and with the ONCC Board of Directors to carry out association business. The GM is an employee of the association. The GM has very little decision making power. The job of the GM is to assist the board by performing research, providing information and advising the board to seek counsel from industry professionals when necessary. The GM who holds State Certified designations has met industry standard education requirements for common interest developments. The GM is to guide boards away from risk and liability and move towards safety and productivity by education and utilizing other legal and professional resources. Why is it necessary to put this policy in the Bylaws? It becomes enforceable. This allows the board, for instance, to implement the compliance process outlined in the legal document for the board member who violates corporate and board policies. Thus minimizing the need to call legal counsel. You may not be aware but the ENTIRE policy is amendable by a majority vote of the board at any time. It may be changed from time to time to fit the dynamics of the current board. Placing the code in the Bylaws, making it a requirement for a board member to agree and abide by, is the necessary legal step to enforce corporation accountability. The main benefit is create an avenue of protection for the entire association and minimize legal costs. The purpose of the document is to encourage compliance not punishment in setting proper decorum for the board. Every professional entity possesses corporate policies or codes of conduct. This is a widely acceptable business practice. AMENDING BYLAWS To make an ethics pledge mandatory, associations must amend their bylaws to make the pledge a qualification for serving on the board. Once the pledge becomes mandatory, candidates can be disqualified from serving on the board if they refuse to sign the pledge. Depending on the wording of the bylaw amendment, a violation of the pledge could also result in disciplinary action against a director up to and including removal from the board. For a valid removal by fellow directors, due process must be followed. For removal by the membership, no hearings are required. (Board Code of Conduct) From Adam Stirling (Legal Law Firm) Help make the Code of Conduct a necessary board member requirement to serve on the ONCC Board of Directors. Side note: Laws are created to control anarchy, and are for the lawless. People who obey laws don t usually worry about the consequences of breaking the laws. ~Nina Stanley, General Manager There is a bill that is proposing to do away with board member qualifications, including allowing felons to serve. The legal and CID proponents are lobbying against this bill in order to continue protecting associations. We are hopeful it will not pass.
September - October 2018 2 After months of deliberation and patience, the completion of a second Pickle Ball court was celebrated at a Ribbon-Cutting Pot Luck event, organized by Susan Christ, along with Carole Fultz. There were many who contributed time and talent to the effort. Shown cutting the ribbon, are Viki and Jim Lassiter, who were most instrumental in getting a second court installed. Other "picklers" shared the special event! The afternoon continued with rotating Pickle Ball games and good food and drink enjoyed by all! The courts are open to ONCC members. September - October 2018 3 Introducing A New Fitness Level II Instructor Our beloved Sharon Kearin has been teaching fitness classes at the Oaks North Community Center for the past 15 years. She is moving away from the area and will be missed by many. She leaves behind a fabulous legacy. But worry not! She is sending a wonderful replacement to continue her legacy. His name is Shawn Thompson! He has been under her mentorship since he was 21 years of age and he also currently teaches at Casa De La Campanas. He recently co-taught a class with Sharon at ONCC and has met many of the members. He made quite an impression because a few members attended the August Board Meeting to express how much they enjoyed his teaching and instruction. We are very sorry to see you leave Sharon and we welcome Shawn whole-heartedly! FITNESS CENTER PERSONAL TRAINERS Members who wish to have a personal trainer for the Fitness Center, must obtain registration documents in the office for their trainers to complete and return to the office staff. Personal Trainers must provide proof of licensing and/or certification. Personal trainers must sign-in at the Association Office prior to each training session. Please review the rules And regulations prior to use. Be mindful of others using he equipment and adhere to the 20 minute courtesy rule. Think picnics and BBQs and loafing around the house. We have a live 3-piece band that plays popular ballroom dance music. The Club provides snacks and a special dessert at break time as well as ice, water, tea and coffee. It is BYOB for any members and their guests who choose to do so. The theme for the October dance on Saturday, October 20 th is Harvest Moon. It will be a potluck dinner so we will be starting at 6:00 PM instead of 7:00 PM that evening. Please bring your contribution to the Oaks North Auditorium by 5:30 PM (no later than 5:45 PM) so the Board members can set out the food on the tables and have everything ready by 6:00 PM Dancing will start at 7:00 PM as usual. All residents of the Oaks North community are cordially invited to attend and may bring guests. First time attendance is free. Charge is $10.00 for all others who are not members of the Dance Club. At 7 PM, the tour guides will discuss the various trips being offered and an opportunity to sign up will be provided for trips and our membership which entitles you to a discount on the trips! It's okay to join us solo, players change partners for each round. A round is usually six hands. Experience bidding and playing is essential, but a time gap in your bridge experience shouldn't stop you from checking out the game. Nothing gets the rust off like playing. If you are not sure whether this is the right game for you, the best thing to do is to go to the La Piñata Room on a Monday afternoon and play or just observe. We usually go out for lunch together after our meeting. Don t let our name fool you- some of our members are not educators. They just like our group and our socials. All Oaks North residents are Welcome to join our group. In July we went to the Del Mar Races. In August, we went to see Spamalot and had dinner at Old Town afterwards. September - October 2018 6 La wn Bowling Club As we move into cooler weather (thank heaven!), more and more Lawn Bowling Club members will be out on the green enjoying the friendly competition. You can be one of them! And if you don't want to bowl, you can also join as a social member. "What does that mean?," you ask. For example, on September 1st, as a part of our Labor Day special event, you can join us for a fun and yummy brunch following the game of bowls. And if you like donning a costume for Halloween, we'll have a lunch following the game on that day, as well. These social activities are included in the cost of your membership. New York Group Hello All! In July we had two large groups attend the Bernardo Winery. Residents and friends had a really good time. We had so much fun we went twice. Thank You to those who were there. On Thursday, September 27th the film will be, Engineering The Twin Towers - The Reconstruction, in honor and memory of 9/11. A very moving PBS documentary. On Thursday, October 25th a New York theme movie will be shown TBD. The New York Group meets the fourth Thursday of every month at the Oaks North Community Center Auditorium from 7 PM - 9 PM. Marshall travels to conservative Connecticut when wealthy socialite Eleanor Strubing accuses black chauffeur Joseph Spell of sexual assault and attempted murder. He soon teams up with Sam Friedman, a local Jewish lawyer who's never handled a criminal case. Together, the two men build a defense while contending with racist and anti-semitic views from those who deem Spell to be guilty.
