Homework 1- respiratory system 1. The diagram below shows part of the human respiratory system. (a) Match each letter to the part of the respiratory system it represents. Letter A B C D Name of part Alveolus Bronchus Trachea Bronchiole 3 (b) State which letter identifies the site of gas exchange. 1 2. The table below shows how the volume of air in Jonny s lungs changed during different activities. Activity Sitting Walking Breathing rate (Breaths per minute) Climbing stairs Playing basketball 12 16 20 29 (a) Calculate how many breaths Jonny will take if he plays basketball for 30 minutes. Space for working breaths 1 (b) Calculate the increase in Jonny s breathing rate between sitting and climbing the stairs. Space for working breaths per minute 1

(c) Select one word in the brackets to correctly describe the relationship between Jonny s breathing rate and the demand of the activity. As the demand of the activity increases, Jonny s breathing rate { increased / decreased / stays the same }. 1 (d) Present the information about Jonny s breathing rate as a bar graph. 3 Total mark 10

Homework 2- circulatory system 1. Read the passage about the pathway of blood through the heart. The heart is responsible for pumping blood around body. The walls of the heart are made from muscle tissue. The heart consists of two separate sides, and the blood does not mix between the two. The right-hand side of the heart only pumps blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen, whilst the lefthand side of the heart pumps blood to the rest of the body. Each side of the heart is made up of two chambers - meaning that there are four in total. The atrium is at the top and the ventricle is at the bottom. Blood enters the heart through a vein and collects in the right atrium. The first part of a heart beat causes the atrium wall to contract, which pushes the blood into the ventricle. The second part of a heart beat then causes the muscular wall of the ventricle to contract - forcing the blood out of the heart. The heart contains valves which keeps the blood flowing one way. There are two sets of valves in the heart. The first is between the atria and ventricles. The other set is between the arteries leading out of the heart and the ventricles. Answer the following questions based on the information in the passage. (a) State the function of the heart. (b) Name the chamber at the top of the heart. (c) (i) State the location of the valves within the heart. (ii) Describe the role of the valves within the heart. (d) Apart from picking up oxygen, describe what else happens to the blood when it travels to the lungs.

2. In a survey, S2 pupils were asked how often they exercise. The results are shown in the table below. Frequency of Exercise Everyday 3 times a week Once a week No exercise Number of pupils 5 30 45 20 (a) Display the results above as a pie chart. 2 (b) Exercise is an example of a positive lifestyle choice which can help maintain good health. Give another example of a positive lifestyle choice. (c) Body measurements can be used to indicate a person s health. (i) Give an example of a piece of equipment which is used to monitor a person s health. (ii) Name the health condition your piece of equipment is used to indicate. Total mark 10

Homework 3- digestive system 1. The diagram below represents some parts of the digestive system. (a) Using information in the diagram, complete the table below about the digestive system. Letter Name of part Function B Mixes food with acid and enzymes D Small intestine F Produces bile 3 (b) Enzymes are found throughout your digestive system. Their job is to help break down large food molecules into smaller molecules. The diagram below represents a large food molecule. Draw what the molecule might look like after it has been digested by enzymes. 1

(c) The table below shows the volume of juices released into the digestive system each day. Digestive juice Volume (cm 3 ) Saliva 1400 Gastric juice 2500 Bile 500 Pancreatic juice 700 Intestinal juice 3000 (i) State which digestive juice has the smallest volume released into the digestive system. (ii) Calculate how many times great the volume of intestinal juice released compared to the volume of bile released. Space for calculation times 1 (iii) Calculate the simple whole number ratio of the volume of saliva compared to the volume of pancreatic juice released. Space for calculation : 1 Saliva Pancreatic 2. Some people have problems with their digestive system. Using available resources, complete the table below about a problem with the digestive system. Name of condition Symptoms Treatment 3 Total mark 10
