MINDEN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND CITY OF MINDEN ROLL OUT NEW SHOP IN MINDEN CAMPAIGN The Minden Chamber of Commerce is organized for the purpose of advancing the economic, commercial, industrial, professional, civic, and cultural interests and general welfare of the City of Minden, Nebraska and its trade area. The Board of Directors take this mission statement very seriously. In this day and age where consumers have so many options for their shopping needs, it s even more important that we help our small business owners fight to keep those sales in our community, says Chamber President Marcy Brandt. It s part of our mission as a Chamber to do everything we can to help our businesses thrive and grow. It was during a presentation about how to become a Main Street Community that Brandt, Chamber Administrator Marcia Davis, Chamber Vice President Kevin Krull, City Administrator Matthew Cederburg, and City Clerk Abbey Jordan all started to realize the importance of creating a Shop in Minden campaign. The five started meeting regularly to create a plan, which they City of Minden and Minden Chamber of Commerce will be rolling out in phases, starting in November. Having the support of the City has been very important, says Davis. And they did not hesitate to come alongside the Chamber as we began to talk about this campaign. They ve been a great partner. City Administrator Matthew Cederburg says, When local residents shop within their community, these tax dollars stay within the local economy, helping to improve our wonderful community. Our community sees a direct impact by shopping local; not only does going local create more local wealth and local jobs, it improves and supports essential City services. As sales go up, the City can provide additional support towards these vital functions. During the first phase of the Shop IN Minden campaign, the Chamber of Commerce will provide all of their current members with various marketing materials such as digital logos, shopping bag stuffers, and window signs to use in their stores, on their websites and on social media. The Chamber will also be featuring a Deal of the Week on their Facebook and Twitter pages to help promote local businesses. In the future they hope to create video testimonials, group advertising opportunities, Shop IN Minden merchandise, informational articles in the Chamber s monthly newsletter and other media outlets. We realize that there are things you simply can t get in Minden. However, what we want to challenge people to do is to at least stop and consider buying as much as possible here in town, comments Chamber Vice President Kevin Krull. We want people to stop and think about how it benefits not only our local economy, but the impact it has on their friends, their neighbors, and even their own quality of life. We want people to think about the bigger picture. Rowe Adventures Winter Walkabout Sunday, December 4 1:00 pm 4:00 pm Explore the trails along the Platte River to discover that even in winter, animals and insects find ways to adapt. Families and participants of all ages will also enjoy making bird feeders together and conducting a bird survey while watching the feeders from the windows of the center. Halloween Parade, 2016 Thank you Miss Christmas City, Courtney Thompson for leading the parade around the square and all the businesses that participated. It was great day for the parade. $5/person or $10/family. Hot cider and treats will be served Dress for a walk outdoors.

The event ran smoothly and the weather was beautiful. Marcia will take care of thanking everyone who helped. II. 2017 Membership: Marcia Davis has been working on freshening up the membership brochure. The Board reviewed the brochure and made a few suggestions. Discussion was held on membership dues for 2017. Board members did not feel any increase was needed at this time. Marcia will complete the brochure once the election results are in and it should be ready for the 2017 campaign drive at the first of the year. III. 2017 Budget: Marcy Brandt and Marcia Davis presented a 2017 budget for review. A line item discussion was held. Carol Loschen asked if it was still necessary to continue with the Century of Light budget item and if there were any excess funds in the Century account? It was suggested that Century of Lights could fall under the Christmas Traditions event now. Carol Loschen moved to close the Century of Lights checking account and move those funds into the general account. Jordon Patterson second, motion carried. The Christmas Traditions budget was set at $2,000.00 for the coming year. Marcia and Marcy will update the budget per Board recommendations and bring it to the December meeting for approval. IV. Shop Minden: The campaign is almost ready for kick off. Chamber members should be watching for more information and a marketing packet in the near future. V. Christmas Festival: Marcia reported that the event is progressing nicely. There have been 4 nominations for Miss Christmas City. Kevin is working with the people on the Bounce houses and Marcia has contacted food vendors for the event. Kevin reported that the Christmas Fun Run is moving forward. New Business I. Event Budget Policy: Marcy Brandt asked the Board for guidance on an event planning policy. She presented a worksheet that she felt might be useful for the committees to use in the planning process. Discussion was held on the need for the event committees to be fiscally responsible and for committees to report monetary expenses to the board prior to the event date, especially if they are going to be over budget. Discussion was also held on the need for each event to have some type of history so new chairpersons have a starting place in planning events. Marcia and Marcy will begin developing some type of event reporting procedures. II. Nominations for Board Members 2017/2020: Board members brought forward several names for people who would be excellent additions to the Chamber Board. Members will contact these potential candidates and see if they would be willing to run. Marcia needs to put the ballot together yet this month, so responses need to be back to her no later than November 14th. III.
