We will be starting off with our Annual General Meeting and Quiz on Sunday afternoon 1 October 2017 at 3 pm during which matters concerning our Society will be discussed. Venue is De Schalm. We ll be saying goodbye to our secretary AnneMarie Meijer who has carried out the secretarial tasks with great dedication for 7 years. It was AnneMarie who introduced our much appreciated film events at Het Filmhuis de Keizer. The committee is very pleased that our former treasurer Paul Lössbroek will succeed her. AnneMarie has kindly promised to continue looking after our website. After the AGM we will continue with The Quiz concerning all things British. You will be split up into groups of four and you decide together which answer should be correct. The winning group receives a prize and the wooden spoons will be for the group which comes last. SAD NEWS In June we received the sad news of the passing of our former Secretary of Genootschap Nederland-Engeland Henk Kluiwstra on 17 June 2017 at the age of 94. This was so shortly after his dear wife Attie died on 8 June 2017, to whom he had been married for 67 years. 3

Henk had been secretary of our branch since 1989 and retired as such in 2007 owing to his declining health and advanced age. Henk was a very kind, loyal and committed member of the GNE committee. We owe him our gratitude for his dedication to GNE and passing on the inspiration to carry on our activities as British Society Deventer. His amiable personality, his love of England and its language and culture, will make us remember him with great fondness. We extend our condolences to his relatives and friends. A WARM WELCOME We extend a warm welcome to Mrs Mensje Griffioen from Apeldoorn who recently joined our society. We hope she will enjoy her membership and will soon feel at home with us. READING GROUP In September our reading group will discuss My Name is Lucy Barton by the American writer Elizabeth Strout. (2016) Lucy Barton, the protagonist of the story, has been in hospital for three weeks with an undiagnosed illness. She misses her husband and two small daughters desperately. Unexpectedly, her mother, from whom she has been estranged for years, arrives at her bedside. Lucy is now a successful writer but her mother s presence evokes memories of her childhood - of poverty, abuse and social isolation. Her mother s presence brings hope of a reconciliation. Her mother tells her stories about people they used to know and their failures and miseries thus avoiding the family s troubled history. Even this makes Lucy very happy in spite of her mother not being able to express her emotions. This is a novel about the complicated love of mothers and daughters, written with compassion and insight. In 2017 Elizabeth Strout s latest novel Anything is Possible was published. If you would like to join our book club or just attend one of our meetings to see if it might appeal to you (now on Friday afternoons every two months) please contact Els Vorenkamp 06-50451466. MEMBERSHIP FEES Our treasurer would like to remind you of your membership fees for the season 2017-2018. Again there has been no rise in fees. Please remit your fees ( 54 for couples, 30 for single members) before 1 October to Bank number NL25INGB0003158375 to British Society Deventer. Thank you for your early remittance! 4
