May 2017 Welcome to the Spring/Summer newsletter. In this newsletter you will find details of forthcoming meetings as well as recent events and news of how you can take part in the running of the group Last-minute news!! special talk Tuesday 16 May Please come to our meeting on Tuesday 16 th May for an exciting talk on The 100,000 genomes project and myeloma, by Suriya Kirkpatrick, the senior cancer clinical trials nurse at Southmead. We are lucky that Bristol is taking part in this ultra-new research, and Suriya herself is involved. The most remarkable treatments will come from modern genetics! Tue 16 th May, 7:00, Upper Horfield Community Trust, Eden Grove BS7 0PQ NEW! Coffee cake and, Wed 21 June 10:30am A new idea for the group! We will meet for coffee at the Pitcher and Piano on Bristol BS1 5UH, from 10.30am. Please come! Cake and crafts at BHOC, Tue 27 June help please! Following our successful Christmas stall at BHOC in December, we have decided to hold another cake/handicraft stall on Tuesday 27 th June from 10.00am to help promote Myeloma Awareness week (June 21-27) and our group. Any donations on the day will be gratefully received. The more we receive the more we can sell! If you have any cakes or craft items to sell, and you cannot get to BHOC on that day, please be in touch and we ll arrange for someone to collect them. If you can spare an hour or two to help run the stall we d be very grateful please be in touch.

Pub lunch with Bath group Wed July 12th At the Bath Infoday some of us met Denis, leader of Bath Myeloma Support Group, and other members of the Bath group. They were very friendly and keen to have a joint social event with us. Now we have received an invitation from them for lunch on July 12 th at The Globe Inn, Newton St. Loe. This is a great opportunity to meet fellow patients and carers in a relaxed environment. Please put it in your diary now! Plans decided at our recent meetings Many of you will have received an email with the outcome of our March meeting, and notes from the subsequent Team meeting on April 1 st. Very briefly, the group has decided to continue to run with a team organising activities and discussing the organisation of the group. If you haven t received the notes please let Sarah Rossiter know. The team is open to anyone who would like to join; there will be three or four meetings a year. The dates for these meetings will be given in future newsletters. If you have any suggestions for the group or ideas for speakers, but are unable to come to the team meeting, please be in touch. The next team meeting is Saturday July 1 st, 2:00pm at Claire s house. If you d like to join us please get the address from Sarah Rossiter If you missed it - Infoday at Bath racecourse The Myeloma UK Infoday held at Bath Racecourse on April 8 th was very well attended. All the tickets were sold. Our group was well represented, and a few new members signed up to join the group. If you missed it, all the talks of the day are available on the Myeloma UK website.

What are Themed meetings? Themed meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of every other month, from 7-9pm, as in the past. We aim to invite a speaker or arrange a theme. The meetings will be advertised in the local hospitals. Tea, coffee and cake are readily available, and a warm welcome to new and existing members. Next meeting is on May 16 th, when Suriya Kirkpatrick, the senior cancer clinical trials nurse at Southmead, will be talking on genetics research. Upper Horfield Community Trust, Eden Grove BS7 0PQ What are Coffee, cake and dates? Many members of our group find it difficult to get to the evening meetings. So we ve decided to try social daytime events which work well for other groups like ours. We will meet at the Pitcher and Piano on Bristol just off the centre. Coffee, cake and will be held there on the third Wednesday of every other month. The first date is June 21 st. Anyone is most welcome. Please contact Barbara (01275 851086) if you need more information. There will be an orange Myeloma Buddy on the table to welcome you! Please come to this new event! So with the help of Myeloma UK our aim is to encourage new members. Myeloma UK has produced business cards for us and will help us produce leaflets with our events for the year. The local hospitals are also keen to promote our group. If you can use the business cards, leaflets or posters to advertise the group please be in touch.
