PHYSICAL EDUCATION III (Aerobics) Instructor: Ms. Bailey Room: Gym COURSE DESCRIPTION: PE III (Aerobics) PE III (Aerobics) is general course in physical education with fitness and wellness components. The fitness component will be activities such as; aerobic dancing, circuit training, weight lifting, yoga, Pilates, step aerobics, Zumba, kickboxing, power walk and run, team and individual sports. The wellness component will be classroom activities focusing on nutrition, eating disorders, body composition testing, and injuries. PHILOSOPHY: As a Fitness and Wellness instructor, I believe every student is entitled to a quality, positive learning experience and atmosphere in their fitness and wellness class. Students will be provided with a basic understanding of exercise and how cardiovascular conditioning can occur. Students will become aware of their own bodies responses during exercise and develop an understanding of what exercises to avoid and why. To make sure each student has a positive experience, they must be in class and participate. There are several regulations, rules, and policies that each student will need to adhere to so I can provide every student their opportunity and right to learn in a positive and safe environment. I will provide sessions where the students can improve their overall fitness level and have fun doing it. PARTICIPATION/DRESSING DOWN 1. All students will dress down and participate every class period. Dress Down - each student will need to have the following physical education clothing on a daily basis: (1) Clean court shoes (2) T-shirt appropriate for physical education activity. (3) Physical education shorts (4) Clean Socks (5) Sweatshirt & Sweatpants. (For cool, damp weather conditions) 2. All students will participate unless participation is limited by a written physician s excuse. Limited means: students will be required to dress down and participate with accommodations to their condition of illness or injury. PARENTS WRITTEN REQUEST FOR NON-DRESS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Parents are requested to contact the teacher by phone prior to the start of the school day. 3. Every effort will be made to have every student dress down and participate every day. If available, we will offer clean PE clothing for the student to use on a temporary basis. Students that refuse to dress down will have a conference with their teacher and will contact a guardian/parent. If the student still refuses to dress down he/she is subject to the following discipline options exercised at Coach Bailey s discretion. Participation in school clothes Garbage patrol Weight Room cleanup Janitor assistant Referral to administration 4. Students will be allowed 3 extracurricular as well as 3 doctor excused absences with no penalty. After three, the student is responsible to make up participation points for each additional day they are absent or cannot participate. ATTENDANCE: 1. Attendance will be taken 7 minutes after the tardy bell rings. 2. Students need to be in their assigned area for attendance or they will be marked absent/tardy. 3. Do not touch or play with the equipment prior to instruction from the teacher.
4. Students will remain in the locker room until the dismissal bell rings. ABSENCE MAKE-UP: 1. Make-up for excused as well as unexcused absences will be a fitness run. Dates and times to be announced. 2. Tardy no make-up!!! GYM RULES: 1. Gym and Locker room doors will be locked during all lunches. 2. Food or drink will not be allowed in the gym, weight room, or wrestling room. 3. Horseplay of any type will not be allowed in the locker room or during class. 4. Do not bring valuables to class. 5. Keep the locker room clean. 6. No student will remain in the locker room during activity times. 7. No student will leave the activity area without permission from the teacher. 8. NO GUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GRADING POLICY: 1. PARTICIPATION (40%) each student is responsible for dressing down every class period. -20 points for 1 st unexcused non-dressing down, Verbal Warning & Cleanup Duty/work out in street clothes (teacher decision). -20 points for 2 nd unexcused non-dressing down, meeting w/vp -20 points for 3 rd unexcused non-dressing down, VP, & mtg. w/parents -20 points for 4 th unexcused non-dressing down & possible removal from class. Each student starts class with 20 points. Infractions of rules result in loss of points. -10 points = inappropriate or partial dressing down. -5 to -20 points = poor conduct, lack of effort, attitude, and cursing. -10 points = leaving the locker room prior to dismissal bell. -5 points = being tardy to class. 2. Folders/Assignments (30%) each student is responsible for keeping track of their workout folder. Assignments are to be kept in this folder and turned in at the end of each quarter. LATE WORK IS NOT ACCEPTED!!!!! 3. Fitness Testing (10%) Performance based test done in seven areas of fitness. Mile, sit and reach, sit ups, push ups, flexed arm hang, BMI & body fat testing. Three fitness tests will be given throughout the semester. Each student is expected to complete the test to the best of his/her ability. The final Fitness Test will be graded on what is considered the Healthy Fitness Zone by Fitnessgram standards 4. Tests/Final (20%). LOCKER POLICY: 1. All students will be issued a combination PE locker and lock for their use during the school year. 2. Students will use only the locker assigned to them. 3. Do not use another person s locker. 4. Do not ask for other people s locker combination. It will not be given out. 5. Locker fee is $10. Lockers will not be issued until fee is paid. ELECTRONIC DEVICES: All electronic devices have a no tolerance policy at Timpview High. If I see it, I will confiscate it and take it to the office. For more details check the Timpview agenda.
