1 FRA 105 Weight Training Spring 2018 Course Time: Course Location: Instructor: Office: Office Hours: MW 11:00-11:50 Whitley Gym 136 Dr. Vipa Bernhardt Field House 006 By appointment COURSE INFORMATION Materials No textbook required. However, you will need a folder for your handouts. PLEASE BRING A PENCIL AND A BOTTLE OF WATER TO CLASS EVERYDAY! Attire Students must wear athletic attire suitable for weight training, including athletic shoes, shorts or sweats, and t-shirt. NO DENIM or non-athletic apparel. You will be lying on the floor and on benches for some exercises, so be sure your clothing is modest. Students not dressed appropriately will be asked to leave and will receive an unexcused absence for the day. Course Description This course is designed for the beginning or novice weight trainer. The purpose is to introduce students to the basic techniques of weight training emphasizing the care and use of equipment, safety, and correct techniques. Learning Objectives By the end of the course, the successful student will be able to: 1. Appreciate weight training as part of a fitness program. 2. Demonstrate understanding of concepts related to resistance training and muscular fitness. 3. Demonstrate correct technique for a variety of weight training exercises. 4. Gain muscular endurance and strength as a result of participating in workouts.

2 COURSE EVALUATION Attendance makes up the majority of your grade. Being an FRA course, the idea is for you to participate. Because we all come to this class with a variety of skill and experience, your grade is not determined by how much you can lift, but by your willingness to take instruction, follow the safety rules and correct lifting technique, and get in a good workout! Attendance Knowledge Midterm Final Skills Total 140 points (10 per class) 25 points 25 points 60 points 250 points Grading Scale: pts A pts B pts C pts D < 149 pts F Nothing can be done to change your final grade once it is assigned (no extra credit, extra assignments, retaking tests, etc.). Extra credit opportunities One point may be earned for each Morris Recreation Center workout class you attend. Prepare an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper with your name, the date, the name and time of the class, bring it to the class, and have the instructor sign it at the end of class. Also include a short description of the class and your experience in the class. Show it to me at our next class meeting. You will only get credit one time for each different class you attend. A maximum of 10 points extra credit can be earned. I may provide more extra credit opportunities during the semester. The last day to turn in any extra credit is December 6 th at the beginning of class. Attendance COURSE AND UNIVERSITY PROCEDURES/POLICIES Attendance is REQUIRED. Excused absences include university approved absences and/or those of which the instructor receives appropriate notification ahead of time. It is the student s responsibility to notify the instructor ahead of time via if they are

3 going to miss class due to an excused absence and make arrangements for all materials and assignments that will be missed on that day. Five points will be deducted for each tardy up to 10 minutes. After 10 minutes the student will be considered absent. Situations of extreme absenteeism will be handled on an individual basis. If you miss a number of days that I determine will not allow you to participate in the class safely and effectively, you may be dropped from the class or not allowed to participate. Participation Students are expected to participate in class in order to receive credit for attendance. Each student is provided with a waiver that must be completed and returned to the instructor. This waiver states that the student is able to participate in physical activity and has no known medical reasons that should prevent safe participation. Any known medical concerns or conditions should be communicated to the instructor to ensure safe participation in physical activity. If special accommodations are needed please refer to the ADA statement in this syllabus, and contact Student Disability Resources and Services. Classroom/Student Expectations Students are expected to behave appropriately and be respectful to fellow students, the instructor, and the gym equipment. Appropriate behavior involves paying attention, actively participating, and following instructions. Cell phones, music, inappropriate language/gestures, and any other behavior determined to be a distracting will not be tolerated. Students who are considered to be a disturbance in class will be asked to leave. If at any time students do not abide by safety procedures, the student will be asked to leave the class and it will be considered an unexcused absence. Lifting (heavy) weight incorrectly can be dangerous to you and other students, if safety procedures are not followed. SAFETY FIRST! All students enrolled at the University shall follow the tenets of common decency and acceptable behavior conducive to a positive learning environment. See Students Guide Handbook for details. Academic Honesty Policy Texas A&M University-Commerce does not tolerate plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty. All persons involved in academic dishonesty will be disciplined in accordance with University regulations and procedures (see Student s Guide Handbook).

4 Campus Concealed Carry Texas Senate Bill - 11 (Government Code , et al.) authorizes the carrying of a concealed handgun in Texas A&M University-Commerce buildings only by persons who have been issued and are in possession of a Texas License to Carry a Handgun. Qualified law enforcement officers or those who are otherwise authorized to carry a concealed handgun in the State of Texas are also permitted to do so. Pursuant to Penal Code (PC) and A&M-Commerce Rule R1, license holders may not carry a concealed handgun in restricted locations. For a list of locations, please refer to (( res/34safetyofemployeesandstudents/ r1.pdf) and/or consult your event organizer). Pursuant to PC , the open carrying of handguns is prohibited on all A&M-Commerce campuses.
