1 Group Fitness Adlai E. Stevenson High School Physical Welfare Course Description: This program is designed to offer the students a wide variety of cardiovascular fitness activities in order to enhance physical wellness. Activities include: Step aerobics, High/Low impact, Yoga, Zumba, Aqua, Kickboxing, Rope jumping, Slide, trail and track workouts. This program also offers a variety of strength training activities that include: Circuit training, Body sculpting, Pilates and core work, and resistance/weight training. Multiple credits may be earned for this course. Fitness testing is conducted twice per semester. Content Objectives: By the end of this course, students will be able to: A. Perform the four fitness tests and improve scores from pre test to post test. B. Participate in moderate to vigorous activity C. Learn and participate in a variety of cardiovascular group exercises. D. Perform specific strength exercises. E. Lead and instruct the group through an aerobic activity based on prior knowledge of curriculum and current teacher practice. Course Expectations: Students are expected to: Wear appropriate physical education clothing and shoes. Participate in daily activity. Make up any excessive absences, unexcused or suspended days. Treat others with respect. Practice healthy hygiene by washing your P.E. clothes weekly. Course Activities: Step High/Low impact/ Zumba Circuit/Interval training Yoga Aqua Kickboxing Rope Jumping Slide Pilates Weight Training Resistance Training Track/Trail workouts Evaluation: This course is pass/fail. Students will pass based on: Daily participation. Appropriate dress for class. Completion of personal fitness tests two times per semester. Completion of personal aerobic routine. Each week your grade will be posted on infinite campus. You will receive a numerical grade of a five, three, or one. An explanation of each number is described below. 5- You are dressed and participate every day. 3- You did not dress or participate, received an unauthorized absence, or your teacher gave you a make-up due to excessive tardiness or lack of participation. You have one make-up to complete. You are in danger of failing. Your grade will remain a three until your make-up is completed. 1- You have two or more make ups to complete due to reasons listed above. You are currently failing. Your grade will remain a one until your make-ups are completed.

2 Make-up Policy: Make- ups can be completed during study halls or lunch periods. You will need to get a make- up card from your P.E. teacher. To fulfill your make- up you will need to attend and participate in another P.E. class, or work out in the fitness/cardio center. All swimming make- ups need to be completed in the pool. After completing your make- up, have your card signed by the teacher/supervisor whose class you attended and give it back to your P.E. teacher. Proper P.E. Attire: T- shirt Shorts Sweatpants Gym shoes Socks Sweatshirts Sports bra Clean uniforms (shirts/shorts) may be rented for 25 cents a piece

Participate in daily physical activity. B. Know and apply principles and components of health-related fitness. C. Exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings. D. Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. E. Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness based upon continual self-assessment. F. Demonstrate knowledge of rules, safety and strategies during physical activity. Content A. Participate in daily physical activity. 1. I can participate in activity that will maintain or enhance my fitness level. 2. I can execute a proper warm-up prior to vigorous exercise. B. Know and apply principles and components of health-related fitness. 1. I can participate in an instructor lead strength routine (i.e. circuit training, body bars, bosu balls, swiss balls, dumb bells, resistance bands, Pilates mat work). 2. I can adjust my form while performing an exercise, based on my instructor s feedback and critiques. 3. I understand the benefits of strength training activities. 4. I can identify the major muscle groups of the upper and lower body. 5. I understand basic strength-training terminology (i.e. repetitions, sets). 6. I prepare my lesson before instructing the students in order to show competency in the lesson being taught. 7. I provide instruction that is clear and concise for everyone to demonstrate correctly. 8. I design a personal physical fitness routine in showing my knowledge of an aerobic activity. 9. I recognize that making mistakes is part of the learning process. 10. I am able to break down skills into teachable step-by-step parts. 11. I can perform and self-evaluate my leadership assignment in my aerobic routine.

I can participate in an instructor lead cardio/aerobic conditioning routine (i.e. Kickboxing, Step, Slide, Hi/Lo, Jump rope, Aqua, Yoga) 2. I combine and apply various movement patterns. 3. I practice current aerobic activities that are in health club settings. E. Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness based upon continual selfassessment. 1. I can perform four fitness tests and improve scores from pre-test to post test. 2. I can achieve the healthy zone on the mile run. 3. I can achieve the healthy zone on the push-up assessment. 4. I can achieve the healthy zone on the curl-up assessment. 5. I can achieve the healthy zone on the sit and reach assessment. F. Demonstrate knowledge of rules, safety and strategies during physical activity. 1. I prepare my lesson before instructing the students in order to show competency in the lesson being taught. 2. I provide instruction that is clear and concise for everyone to demonstrate correctly. 3. I design a personal physical fitness routine in showing my knowledge of an aerobic activity. 4.
