Message from Jenny Allen, Chair & Carer Dear Reader, We are currently seeking new trustees in the Since the spring edition of Carers Voice we have welcomed new staff members, Louise Vladi, our Coordinator, and Nikki Hawes, our PR and Fundraiser, who bring a wealth of expertise and enthusiasm to the Association. north Wealden area. Trustees are the people in charge of the Association and they play a vital role, volunteering their time and working together to make important decisions about the charity's work. For more information, please contact us. In this issue you can read about Carers Week which runs from 6th to 12th June. It is an annual campaign which aims to raise awareness of the challenges that Carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. The Association will be holding events throughout the county during this week. We are also on the lookout for new members to join the Association. Membership is free and members can have a say on how we operate, who our trustees are and they can also vote at our annual general meeting. A member can be anyone who receives our services or has received them, is or has been a volunteer or someone who wants to support us. For more information, please call us. In June we will also be celebrating Volunteers Week with our two thank you meals for our volunteers at the South Coast College in Hastings and The Moorings in Pevensey Bay. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the lunch at the South Coast College. Best wishes Jenny Jenny Allen - Chair Patient Transport Services for Sussex (non-emergency) For non-emergency patient transport call 0300 111 2131 (local rate call) You may be eligible for a free service if you have a medical need. Support for Carers to Identify and Plan Residential Respite otherwise known as SCIPRR The Association of Carers have been funded for this service by East Sussex County Council. There may be many reasons why a Carer needs to look for a residential or Nursing home for the person they look after, these might include a holiday, a planned operation and recuperation or a regular respite break. However, there can be many barriers to Carers being able to look for a residential home for the person they care for, these can include time and knowledge of where to look for information in regard to homes for respite. The Association of Carers can provide a trained volunteer to support a Carer, either face to face or on the telephone, to help them find information to be able to choose a suitable home, using a variety of methods. The volunteer will ideally help the carer identify three potential homes, they could also visit the home with the Carer if required and support them to think about questions to ask and to make a decision about which home is most suitable. If the Carer has no family or friends to visit the person they care for while they are away, the Carer can request that we arrange for a suitable volunteer to do this. This gives the Carer peace of mind knowing that the wellbeing of the person they look after will be monitored while they are unable to look after them. If you feel that you need this support please give us a call on 0300 330 9498 (local rate) and speak to a member of the team. Volunteers Nominate a Volunteer Do you know of a volunteer who has gone above and beyond what we expect? This could be: Offering over 9 hours of support per week to the charity regularly Gone out of their way to support a Carer outside of the usual expectations Undertaking several different volunteer roles regularly Volunteering regularly in the face of challenges (i.e illness, bereavement) Supporting a carer in a complex situation that presents a more challenging task Gaining enough confidence through volunteering to get back into paid employment To nominate a volunteer you will need to call us on 01424 722309 and explain why you feel that they deserve the award, and how they have gone the extra mile. This could be an isolated occasion where they acted above what was necessary or could be made up of many smaller accounts. Each nomination will be assessed on its own merits. The closing date for entries is 4pm on Tuesday 17th May. The award will be presented during Volunteer s Week at the volunteer s lunch. Volunteer Spotlight Chris Jukes Chris volunteered for us for around 5 years. He started off with Befriending with Respite and more recently did regular driving, transporting other volunteers to their respite sittings. Chris was a reliable volunteer who was valued greatly. Sadly he passed away suddenly in April. He will be missed and our thoughts are with his family at this time. 4

Fundraising Sue Raises 240 On Sunday 20th March, the Association of Carers Director, Sue Palmer ran the Hastings Half Marathon and raised 240 for the charity. Sue is dedicated to improve the lives of unpaid Carers in East Sussex and would like to say a big thank you to everyone that sponsored her. We now have a fundraising team which meet up every 6 weeks at Jackson Hall in Hastings. We have also added up all volunteer hours for 2015 to 2016, which equates to 27,196 hours. If we worked these hours out at 10 per hour it would equate to 271,960! All of these hours and money will go a long way to help improve the lives of unpaid Carers in the East Sussex. Plea for Tombola Prizes We are organising a tombola for our stall at the Priory Lane Rally in Eastbourne on Sunday 12th June at Langney Sports Club. Donations would be really appreciated such as toiletries, spirits, wine and chocolates, etc. Donations can be taken to Jackson Hall, Portland Place, Hastings. Thank you for your support. 5
