Designed to Move The Neuroscience of Physical Education Brain Rules - Dr. John Medina (0:56-1:35) Exercise Boosts Brain Power In order for man to succeed in life, God provided him with two means, education and physical activity. Not separately, but for the two together. With these two means, man can attain perfection. -Plato 1
Spark - Dr. John Ratey Exercise is better than Zoloft at treating depression. cise-found-effective-against-depression.html Duke University studied 156 adult volunteers with severe depression. Spark - Dr. John Ratey A Dutch study of 19,288 twins showed exercisers are less anxious, less depressed, less neurotic, and more socially outgoing. y.nsf/0/c6247d71a3e97a da15b/$fi LE/Moor_PM_2006.pdf Exercise 3x a week for 30 minutes worked just as well as Zoloft and better as a long term solution. Paul Zeintarski Spark - Dr. John Ratey Naperville Central HS Study (7.:10-9:48) (7:55-9:19) What Happens when we Exercise? Increases blood flow to the brain Increases oxygenation to the brain Growth of nerve cells in the hippocampus Balances levels of neurotransmitters Development of nerve connections Produces neurotrophins BDNF (Miracle Grow for the brain) What is BDNF? Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor BDNF is a protein that is produced in the skeletal muscle cells and helps support the survival of existing neurons and helps encourage the growth of new neurons. Children with ADHD have lower levels of BDNF. Low levels of BDNF are often linked to Alzheimer s, poor neural development, neurotransmitter dysfunction, obesity, depression, and schizophrenia. You can increase levels of BDNF through exercise and diet. 2
Action Based Learning - Jean Blaydes Moize The Brain Movement facilitates cognition Bodily Kinesthetic in one of eight MI Most students are kinesthetic learners Exercise grows new brain cells There is a neural connection between the cerebellum and the PFC Healthy active kids make better learners Neurotransmitters Endorphins-Elevated endorphin levels raise selfesteem and self-concept. Positive social feedback and physical activity raise endorphin levels. Mike Kuczala TED Talk Dopamine-Dopamine supplies the body with a pleasure response. It also helps to control movement. Serotonin-Serotonin calms behavior and keeps our body/brain system running smoothly. Cortisol-Cortisol levels are elevated during stress causing learning to diminish and our body s survival systems to kick in. Vigorous exercise seems to reduce cortisol levels naturally. (2:18-2:57) -Traci Lengel & Mike Kuczala The Six Purposes of Movement 1. Prepare the Brain 2. Provide Brain Breaks 3. Support Exercise and Fitness 4. Develope Class Cohesion 5. Review Content 1. Prepare the Brain Creating a brain-compatible classroom Establishing safe and supportive surroundings Provide a community approach Make sure students are hydrated Incorporating movements that facilitate cognition. 6. Teach Content 3
2. Provide Brain Boosts Give the hippocampus time to process information Provide the opportunity for laughter and fun Develop social skills Reenergize the body and the brain 3. Support Exercise and Fitness Energize body and refocus brain Improve student s health and well-being Improve fitness levels Improve mental/emotional well-being Learning more efficiently Reducing stress 4. Develop Class Cohesion How students get along has a direct link to their learning state Improve communication and listening skills Create a fun environment Improve motivation and discipline 5. Review Content Provide opportunity to use repetition to improve retention Allow time for brain to process Allowing students a chance to engage in a social environment Develop a sense of belonging Improve self-esteem 6. Teach Content Increase understanding and retention Improve social skills and class cohesion Increase learner motivation Provide opportunities for problem solving and higher-level thinking Stimulate the brain/body connection The Association Between School Based Physical Activity, Including Physical Education, and Academic Performance 50 unique studies were reviewed and categorized into 4 groups, school based physical education studies, recess studies, classroom physical activity studies, and extracurricular physical activity studies. Across all studies, 50.5% positive, 48% not significant, and 1.5% negative 4
CDC Study Break Down School Based Physical Education Studies 11 out of 14 studies found one or more positive association on AP 3 were not significant Recess Studies All 8 studies found one or more positive association on AP Classroom Physical Activity Studies 8 of the 9 studies found one or more positive association on AP 1 study was not significant Implications for Schools Schools and physical education teachers can consider increasing the amount of time students spend in physical education or adding components to increase the quality of physical education class. Providing recess to students on a regular basis may benefit academic behaviors, while also facilitating social development and contributing to overall physical activity and its associated health benefits. Classroom teachers can incorporate movement activities and physical activity breaks into the classroom setting that may improve student performance and the classroom environment. Developing or continue school-based sports programs without concern that these activities have a detrimental impact on students academic performance.
