SMARTfit and BDNF Essential for Every Developing Child Early studies indicate that exercise stimulates one of the brain's most powerful growth factors, BDNF, which aids in the development of healthy tissue. BDNF exerts a fertilizer-like growth effect on certain neurons in the brain. The protein keeps existing neurons young and healthy, rendering them much more willing to connect with one another. It also encourages neurogenesis, the formation of new cells in the brain. The cells most sensitive to this are in the hippocampus, inside the very regions deeply involved in human cognition. Exercise increases the level of usable BDNF inside those cells. The more you exercise, the more fertilizer you create." Harvard psychiatrist, John Ratey refers to BDNF as Miracle-Gro for the brain. He calls BDNF a crucial biological link between thought, emotions, and movement. 3

SMARTfit Explained SMARTfit programs are designed to stimulate the body and the brain concurrently. This is accomplished by: Encouraging team participation and engaging sustained focus with short-attention grabbing computer games that are played sequentially to pursue mastery of skills Providing full body motor exercise using the hands, feet, eyes, ears, and vestibular system (stimulating the proprioceptive input to the motor and vestibular systems) in playing real games with real equipment (not simulated) Requiring high levels of attention and focus for success (staying consciously in-the-now ) Engaging in cognitive decision-making under pressure Delivering a cardiovascular workout in a game format 4

SMARTfit Neurons That Fire Together Wire Together When kids are challenged to think and make decisions while doing cardio, motor and skill exercises, the brain quickly adapts: Processing Information Faster Building memory, retention and recall Increasing Attention Span Managing Stress Better Improving Executive Strategy & Technique Under Pressure The Brain Interacts with the World Through the Body 5

Hebbian Theory Winner 2011 Nobel Prize Neurons That Fire Together Wire Together Neuroplasticity, the brain s ability to rewire itself in response to sensory experiences, is now accepted Science. SMARTfit programming goes further, embracing Hebbian Theory with technology and programming designed to simultaneously engage cognitive problem solving while requiring users to engage their whole body to deliver answers by triggering intelligent targets to earn game scores. 6

SMARTfit Releases the Happy Hormones Improving Mood, School Attendance, and Test Scores Dopamine Norepinephrine Serotonin Endorphins Reducing absenteeism, aggression and out-of-school suspensions 7

What makes SMARTfit different? SMARTfit target technology uniquely uses digital technology to operate target touch sensitivity. Target screens are driven by their own computer. Each target (up to 36 wired or wireless in a cluster) can interact with each other and are driven by their master controller. Targets are capable of delivering advanced scalable programming under user-defined settings. SMARTfit touch sensitive technology can recognize and adjust to a wide range of user-definable settings ranging from light touch of a finger to the heavy impact of a medicine ball. 11 SMARTfit Validated by Neuroscience Human nervous system functions invariably involve a combination of cognitive and motor components. I am extremely intrigued and optimistic that SMARTfit will prove to be an exceptionally effective and important tool that combines cognitive and motor training in unique and endless combinations to address a multitude of indications within the athletic and medical realms. I look forward to working closely with you to quantify and document these benefits, optimally integrating them within neurorestoration/athletic/academic training continuum. Charles Y. Liu, PhD, MD Professor, Neurosurgery, Neurology, and Biomemedical Engineering USC Director, USC Neurorestoration Center 11

SMARTfit s Goal Is To Train the whole person, including the brain, to be fit, happy, strong and well
