Using writing to teach your content ON DEMAND OUTSIDE OF THE ENGLISH CLASSROOM

THE BASICS HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT? Often include choice. Extended/Constructed Response Can be informative or argumentative Logically organized Has a purpose Ideas need to be supported On Demand Can be short or long determined by prompt Can use 3.8 paragraph

3.8 PARAGRAPH This is a scaffold to help struggling and developing writers. Many English teachers will be teaching it in their classrooms. (But not all.) Can be used for 1 paragraph responses or full writing pieces. May not be appropriate for students who are already accomplished writers that possess great organization and idea development already.

CURRENT STRATEGIES USED IN ELA CLASS For deconstructing the prompt RAFT For prewriting/organizing Five Paragraph Essay Organizer

EOC EXTENDED RESPONSE OD PROMPT This is NOT an On Demand Prompt because it does not include an audience or a format.

ONE REVISION COULD BE Your congressman has decided to run for president. He is claiming that Franklin D. Roosevelt s changes to the office of the President have ruined this country. Write a letter to your congressman supporting or criticizing his stance on Franklin D. Roosevelt s remaking of the Presidential role. Consider the role of government in the economy, the change in size and scope of the executive branch and the president s use of mass media before and during the New Deal era in your response.

ANOTHER EXAMPLE Hemophilia is a human X-linked recessive disorder that affects blood clotting. Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a human autosomal recessive disorder that affects the body s ability to use the amino acid phenylalanine. Females are less likely to inherit hemophilia than are males, but males and females are equally likely to inherit PKU. Using your understanding of genetics, analyze this description. As part of your answer, be sure to: Describe the difference between sex chromosomes and autosomal chromosomes. Explain why females are less likely to inherit hemophilia than males. Explain why males and females are equally likely to inherit PKU.

A POSSIBLE REVISION COULD LOOK LIKE THIS Your older cousin is about to become a parent. She wrote you an telling how excited she is about the upcoming birth of her daughter. She also shared her worry about the hemophilia and phenylketonuria that runs in her husband s family and wonders if you know anything about it. You know that hemophilia is a human X-linked recessive disorder that affects blood clotting. And that phenylketonuria (PKU) is a human autosomal recessive disorder that affects the body s ability to use the amino acid phenylalanine. Females are less likely to inherit hemophilia than are males, but males and females are equally likely to inherit PKU. Write an response to your cousin, Using your understanding of genetics, be sure to: Describe the difference between sex chromosomes and autosomal chromosomes. Explain why females are less likely to inherit hemophilia than males. Explain why males and females are equally likely to inherit PKU.

WRITING AN ON DEMAND PROMPT Determine the content you want to assess. Write a situation that provides background information and accessibility for students. Create a writing task that specifies audience, purpose (inform, argue, narrate) and form. Commonly used forms letters, speeches, feature articles, editorials

DO I HAVE TO GRADE ALL OF THAT??? Well, it s your assignment. What is your purpose? You will want to grade Purpose did they answer the prompt Idea Development did they answer/explain your content to the depth you wanted. The English dept. asks that you look for Structure 5 paragraphs, at least not word block As much mechanics as you re comfortable with at least capitalization and end marks. Some acknowledgement of the audience (what would that audience already know and need to know?)

GRADING STRATEGIES You most likely will want to create your own rubric. is a very popular one. Have students highlight content and even self or peer-assess using the rubric. Use the OD writing as a last chance formative assessment before a unit test. They can rewrite to a 4 as a remediation strategy.
