Firstly, a brief history of methamphetamine!
Origins of meth/amphetamine Amphetamine first synthesised in 1887 in Germany by Romanian chemist, Lazar Edeleanu. In 1893, Japanese chemist Nagai Nagayoshi used ephedrine to synthesise methamphetamine. In 1919, Akira Ogata (protégé of Nagayoshi), discovered a new method of synthesising the crystalline form giving the world crystal meth

Estimating the number of regular and dependent methamphetamine users in Australia, Louisa Degenhardt, Sarah Larney, Gary Chan, Timothy Dobbins, Megan Weier, Amanda Roxburgh, Wayne D Hall and Rebecca McKetin Med J Aust 2016; 204 (4): 153. used indirect prevalence estimation methods that have been widely applied in illicit drug epidemiology to estimate the size of more hidden and stigmatised groups of illicit drug users. Conclusions: There have been increases over the past 12 years in the numbers of regular and dependent methamphetamine users in Australia. the increase has been most marked among young adults (those aged years).
Trends in methamphetamine residues in wastewater in metropolitan and regional cities in south-east Queensland, Foon Yin Lai, Jake O'Brien, Phong K Thai, Wayne D Hall and Jochen Mueller Med J Aust 2016; 204 (4): Results: Consumption increased 4.8 times in the metropolitan area between 2009 and 2015, and 3.4 times in the regional city between 2010 and 2015 (Box 2).

POSSIBLE FLAWS Increased residues in wastewater can result from: Increased purity More people using Combination of the two
