Designing a scientific poster Similar to a platform (PowerPoint) presentation - fonts, tables/graphic, color scheme - lots of visuals, low word-count Differences - Personal interaction (therefore shower, brush teeth, perfume, etc) - Can coordinate attire
Dimensions and fonts Poster dimension: go to: Design > Page Setup (or Slide Size) > Custom > 43" wide x 34" high. DO NOT CHANGE THE POSTER DIMENSIONS WITHOUT MY PERMISSION Fonts: Arial or Helvetica Title: font size Name and affiliation: (check with your advisor regarding the order of names) Section titles (Introduction, Methods, Results, Conclusion): font size The rest of the text: font size References: font size This section is optional. Leave it out if you run out of space. Check with your advisor Acknowledgements: font size If you adapted/copy the poster design from somewhere, cite the source. Refer to the next page for examples. AU logo Download the AU logo here Use the AU logo once in the poster. If your advisor wants to have two instead, then go ahead. How to change the size of the logo: First thing first: R-click the logo > Size and Position > check the box next to Lock Aspect Ratio. Now you can go ahead and scale the logo without distending it.
*** Important *** You must cite where you copy/emulate the design of the poster. If you got the design idea from one poster, cite that poster as follows: This poster design is adapted from "Lee J, Chong R. Effect of Movement Speed on Eye-Hand Coordination in Parkinson Disease" located at If you got the design idea from multiple posters, cite them as follows : This poster design is adapted from: 1. "Lee J, Chong R. Effect of Movement Speed on Eye-Hand Coordination in Parkinson Disease" located at 2. and so on I will explain some more in class.
Use figures to explain your methods Single-limb landing procedure & EMG placement Light-touch condition no-touch condition

It is not typical to have this much text in a poster. An exception is where one has to explain a theory, a new technique or a piece of equipment. Because of the excessive amount of text, an Abstract is included at the beginning.
/ II9 Visuomotor prism adaptation deficits in Parkinson's disease Raymond K. Chong 1, Kyoung-Hyun Lee 1, 2 & Ji-Hang Lee 2 1 Department of Physical Therapy, Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, GA 2 School of Sports Science, Sungkyunkwan University, Suwon, Korea 1 rchong@mcg.edu INTRODUCTION METHODS The adaptation coefficient during Prism-Off: Previous studies have reported that the cerebellum, the premotor and the posterior parietal cortices are involved in different aspects of prism visuomotor adaptation. However, a complete neural mechanism of prism visuomotor adaptation is yet to be identified. Recent neuro-imaging studies reported activation of the basal ganglia (BG) area when visuomotor adaptation took place (Krebs et al, 1998; Shadmehr & Holcomb, 1999; Krakauer et al, 2003; Seidler, 2006). On the other hand, other imaging studies showed no BG involvement (Inoue et al, 1997; Imamizu et al, 2000). Further, while several previous studies consistently reported the visuomotor adaptation deficits among Parkinson s disease () patients (Stern et al., 1988; Canavan et al., 1990; Contreras-Vidal & Buch, 2003; Messier et al., 2007), others reported no deficits (Weiner, Hallett & Funkenstein, 1983). We believe such discrepancies may be partly due to the different experimental conditions used in those studies. According to Redding & Wallace (1997), two totally different adaptation patterns can be elicited by introducing different amounts of visual feedback during the task performance. Explain your To date, no other studies have clearly distinguished the results visual conditions used in the prism adaptation paradigm to measure the adaptation ability of patients. using In this study we introduced 2 different visual conditions (Full- vs. Terminal-Visual feedback) under the prism simple adaptation paradigm to observe possible dissociations of performance between the 2 visual conditions. RESULTS Normalized Error (m) Full Vision Condition group: 10, 3 (mean age = 66.9 ± 7.0 years, range = 59-78); Hoehn & Yahr ON = 2.1 ± 1.0; test-rest interval = 22.6 ± 19.6 days group: 5, 11 (mean age = 63.8 ± 7.9 years, range = 52-86); test-retest interval = 23.5 ± 27.1 days Pointing movements were paced at 1 Hz per cycle 3M Press-On prism lens: 20 diopter (~ 11.4 degrees) base-right Full Vision Condition Slight performance Full Vision Condition deficits during Prism-Off in both Terminal conditions Vision Condition Prism On Period Trial Numbers Prism Off Period Normalized Error (m) Terminal Vision Condition Terminal Vision Condition Movement error during the Prism-On & Off (group mean): Prism On Period Trial Numbers Adaptation coefficient during Prism-On: Prism Off Period Adaptation Coefficient Full Vision Prism-Off Condition Terminal Vision Prism-Off Condition * Total Shift (m) Slower rate of adaption in the group in Full-Vision Not able to discard the newly acquired set when the nature of the adaptation is rather implicit? CONCLUSIONS Adaptation Coefficient After-effects (after Prism-On): Smaller amount of adaptation in the group in Terminal-Vision Not able to change set on trial-by-trial basis? Full Vision Condition Terminal Vision Condition Although there seems to be a slight performance deficit in patients during the Prism-Off period, overall adaptationreadaptation patterns are quite similar between the groups. During the Prism-On period, both control and groups adapted similarly. However, patients showed significantly decreased amount Total Shift (m) * language Further, we investigated the possibility of set changing (changing internal constraints on action) function of the No significant difference in adaptation rate between groups Full Vision Prism-On Condition Terminal Vision Prism-On Condition of adaptation in the Terminal-Vision condition set-development deficit? BG by analyzing performance during readaptation On the other hand, patients needed more trials to readapt following the conventional prism finger-pointing paradigm. Adaptation Coefficient Adaptation Coefficient in the Full-Vision condition set changing/switching deficit? The results from this study support previous studies suggesting BG involvement in visuomotor prism adaptation. Further, related deficits in specific visual conditions suggests a set-related role of BG during prism adaptation.

Use colors to link figures Blue = Para Sp, Quad, Ab Green = Trap, Gastroc Red = Ham, Tib Ant
Another good example of using colors to link figures Also, notice how the experimental design is explained using figures and minimal text
Another good example of using colors to link similar data In this table, the data are color-coded based on whether a device that subjects wore was turned On or Off
A good example of using colors to link the outcome measures In this illustration, the outcome measures are color-coded making it easy to visualize what measures were taken during the various standing and walking phases Curtze, C., Nutt, J.
