2 Stoney Lake NFB Workshop, June 2013 Outline & order of PPs WILL CHANGE to meet group s needs. Primary Handout: NFB BOOK + Companion to The Neurofeedback Book (in press). (Extra handouts from Power Points 2013: Introduction to Fundamentals, Disorders & NFB, Neuroanatomy, Artifacts & Med. effects, Sleep, (perhaps some PPs from ADHD, Asperger s, TOPS, ) this schedule is designed to cover the BCIA didactic material (plus ) and this knowledge is combined with skills developed through hands-on experience of increasing difficulty. Dr. Sue Wilson may run SSS ( special-sports-sessions)- TBD (To Be Determined Later). Day 1 Monday Scientific Basis of Neurofeedback & Assessment Morning: 8:00-10:30 The Science Underlying NFB (Introduction to Fundamentals 2013PP) + advanced BCIA material,) i. Hands-on Practice in groups: attaching electrodes, checking impedance, and doing assessments, ADD Staff: (Andrea, Lena, Stephanie, Tanushree, ) & Technician (You can set up your own instrument to do this providing it allows you to record EEG, remove artifacts, & place 1 Hz uv mean values into excel for easy graphing.) Day 2 Tuesday Neuroanatomy, Neurophysiology, then begin More Complex Disorders that Require 19 Channel Assessment and NFB + BFB intervention Morning: 8:00-10:30 i. Neuroanatomy & Neurophysiology (Michael) with LORETA and case examples: Begin to learn how LORETA and the functional neuroanatomy of the cortex, using Brodmann Areas & cortical networks, help us to decide on sites for NFB. Begin to understand how the basal ganglia-thalamus-cortical functional circuits control executive functioning. Conceptually connect neocortex-diencephalon-midbrain-brain stem functioning using the Systems Theory of Neural Synergy to help us to correctly prescribe NFB + BFB intervention for various client presentations. (To paraphrase Korbinian Brodmann, 1909 structure dictates function ) ADD Centre / Biofeedback Institute; Lynda Thompson Ph.D ; addcentre@gmail.com; 1
3 10:30 Coffee & Snack Break 10:45-1:00 i. Neuroanatomy and LORETA (continued) &/OR Case examples: Anxiety, Panic, Asperger s, ADHD, Busy-Brain with Depression (Stress PP or aspe Lynda s edit wkshopohs.doc 1-45 ii. Perhaps: Two channel options and Scripts for: Depression with left frontal inactivity; Agitated depression & Bipolar disorder; Asperger s; ADD & Dyslexia (FundamentalsAust p74) iii. Coherence Training (may do at a later point) iv. LORETA NFB, z-score (Andrea will demonstrate) Evening: 5:00-7:30 i. Demonstration 19 Channel Assessment + ERP + HRV. (Case examples: Neuroguide analysis & LORETA) ii. Practical: Set up NFB/BFB stations: 2-3 people to each station (Use own instrument) a. Self Regulation: Learn how your mental state (and therefore how your client can experience how their mental state) corresponds to different frequency bands. ( F Screens (or Sailboat) to feel different states (high, then low, frequency band amplitudes. Try changing your ratios: theta, alpha, or thalpha / beta ratio changes; hi-beta/smr) a. Other including: Shaping (Skeleton screen); (??Coherence Training; Z-score training) Day 3 Wednesday Psychophysiology & NFB + Biofeedback; and Neural Networks Dr Wilson may do part of this morning and part of Thursday Morning &/or afternoon! Morning: 8:00-10:30 Psychophysiology & Optimizing Performance of Executives & Athletes (Dr. Sue Wilson will lecture on athletes) Stress Assessment & Begin Combined NFB + BFB Intervention (Disorders PP) i. What is being measured: RSA (Respiration & Pulse), EDR, EMG, Temperature. ii. Heart Rate Variability, Polyvagal Theory (Porges), HRV increases SMR (Reid & Nihon) iii. How to do a stress assessment, (possible side effects including over-breathing) iv. Stress: Discuss EEG findings, LORETA, AHPA axis, Anterior Cingulate hub of affective control affect network; v. Stress Management - Emphasis Heart Rate Variability (HRV) (connections HPA axis) 10:30 Coffee & Snack Break 11:00-1:00 Neural Networks: Affect, Distress, Executive, Attention, Salience, Default, Placebo More complex EEG Patterns You May See in your Practice (these may require NFB + BFB) (Tourette s, Seizures, then Asperger s as 3 rd, 4 th & 5 th Examples) i. Examples: a. Seizure Disorders & paroxysms (most often previously not diagnosed); Efficacy of NFB b. Anxiety / tension (Stress), panic & Depression; (HR, Resp., EDR, Skin Temp., EMG) c. Movement Disorders (Tourette s) d. Autism & Asperger s ( demonstrate that LORETA findings reflect observed symptoms) ii. EEGs for complex adult cases. Complex child cases including seizure disorders (Doctors may send with a diagnosis of ADHD but some children turn out to have undetected seizures). iii. Lecture on Stages of a Typical Feedback Session (Asperger s Script as an example) with reasons underlying each stage. (Asperger s PP) Evening: 5:00-7:30 NFB Intervention Decision Making Didactic: i. Decision Making Triangle (&/or Pyramid) Decisions based on: Symptoms/Goals EEG & Physiology -- Neuroanatomy (NOT protocols) ii. Complex Cases: Look at EEGs because Assessment Dictates Intervention - a. EEG findings, b. Functional Neuroanatomical Hypothesis, c. Intervention iii. An Overview of Electrode placements and typical screens for addressing various objectives: ADD Centre / Biofeedback Institute; Lynda Thompson Ph.D ; addcentre@gmail.com; 2
4 ADD ADHD LD including Dyslexia Asperger s Movement Disorders (Tourette s and Dystonia with Parkinson s) Depression Anxiety Disorders Seizure Disorders Pain Closed Head Injury - If needed: Demonstrate: series of screens for Children including the use of measurements for: % time above threshold > a constant; points for maintaining state, microvolts. - If needed: Demonstrate: Shaping Behaviour, remaining alert, using strategies, enjoying the process - If needed: Demonstrate: 4 Basic Steps for Training the Client & a 7 step Typical Session for a Child Practical: Set up intervention stations: 2-3 people to each station Do: Stress Assessment & EEG assessment for Anxiety and Ruminations Then do Self Regulation using NFB + BFB (AAA Script & depression Script) Day 4 Thursday Statistics; Head Injury; Optimizing Athletic and Executive Performance (Dr. V.
