HOW DO YOU DEVELOP A PRIMARY PREVENTION METHOD FOR CONCUSSIONS?
3/4 of men playing football will suffer a concussion CDC estimates that 1.7 million to 3.8 million TBI s occur each year 2 LAUREN CONNELL laurenm.connell@yahoo.com
The eyes account for 80% of the information taken into the brain. TIME TIME MIN SEC MIN SEC to react to visual stimuli to react to auditory stimuli 3 LAUREN CONNELL laurenm.connell@yahoo.com
The eyes account for 80% of the information taken into the brain. when a 10 year old looks at a card using peripherals A when we look at a card using peripherals 4 LAUREN CONNELL laurenm.connell@yahoo.com
primary prevention through visual training The eyes account for 80% of the information taken into the brain. Since implementing vision training, UC s football team has seen a decrease from 6 concussions in the pre-season to 0 in 2013 How they work: lights go off and the participant touches the light to turn it off as quickly as possible Dynavision Problems: surface should be ergonimcally rounded doesn t allow for much body movement turns off by touch but doesn t allow for any other action Fitlight Trainer Problems: modular but needs a pre-existing surface to attach to turns off by touch but doesn t allow for any other action 5 LAUREN CONNELL laurenm.connell@yahoo.com
NAME: Phil Jones POSITION: Dynavision Founder The Dynavision lightboard was originally intended to help athletes with their reaction times, but they saw the connection between reaction times and concussion prevention. NAME: Mike Gordon POSITION: Athletic Trainer There is only so much time in the day, if we have 30 minutes of vision training per day, that is time out of the weight room. NAME: Joseph Clark, Ph.D POSITION: Professor of Neurology Society uses less than 10% of their visual field. 6 LAUREN CONNELL laurenm.connell@yahoo.com
research conclusions FASTER REACTION FASTER MANEUVERS LESS RISK OF HEAD INJURY TIME MIN SEC + = FALLS BETTER MOTOR CONTROL = LESS CONTACT GOOD ACUITY GOOD PROPRIOCEPTION GOOD REACTION TIMES PLAYERS ENVIRONMENT TASK AT HAND: create something that increases motor control in order to help mitigate concussions for athletes 7 LAUREN CONNELL laurenm.connell@yahoo.com
Focus: peripherals + reaction time The althete runs through the arrangement of lights, and as he or she runs, a light on either and / or both sides will go off to indicate the user to do an action. Concept 1- Single Piece Light Tunnel Concept 2- Modular Light Tunnel 8 LAUREN CONNELL laurenm.connell@yahoo.com
Focus: peripherals + reaction time + balance The althete stands on the bosu ball, in the orientation shown or flipped, and the poles have lights that flash indicating a certain action. Concept 3 - Vestibular Circle Concept 4 - Vestibular Wall 9 LAUREN CONNELL laurenm.connell@yahoo.com
Focus: reaction time + balance The althete stands on the sensor mats, and when signaled with different tones via the ear piece, the athlete will move to another spot on the mat. Focus: peripherals + reaction time The althete stands on the omni-directional treadmill, and he or she will react to audible stimulation and / or peripheral stimulation. Concept 5 - Audible Jump Mat Concept 6-4D Simulation 10 LAUREN CONNELL laurenm.connell@yahoo.com
validation 80% ranked reaction time as the most important attribute to concussion mitigation A survey was created and sent out to people with medical and/or brain injury knowledge. Concept are not usable with the sport of football. Football players block out all noise while on the field, and so these would not help to mitigate concussions. The participants believe that relating the training back to real world situations is very important. If there are more measurable outcomes, there will be better information to evaluate. No one agreed upon which would be the best concept. Each question resulted in varying answers. 11 LAUREN CONNELL laurenm.connell@yahoo.com
