Final Resolution: Motion Carries Presentation and Discussion related to orientation and overview of current 8 th grade SHARE video titled, Sexually Transmitted Infections: What You Should Know The Committee viewed the current 8 th grade SHARE video entitled, Sexually Transmitted Infections: What You Should Know. The video is designed to presents the facts and symptoms of common sexually transmitted infections (STIs), the pressure teens experience to have sex, and the social and emotional fallouts of those actions. The committee discussed the positives of the video, to include: use of the term sexually transmitted infection rather than sexually transmitted disease; that symptoms are not always seen; differentiated between HIV and AIDS; and it depicted teens being mature and discussing the issues, having open discussions with partners, and respecting consent. Concerns with the video were also discussed to include: the mention of only latex condoms because of allergy concerns; the heterosexual focus of the video; the negative 2

3 stigma associated with AIDS; that abstinence is the major focus versus safe sex practices; the need for more medically accurate information about Herpes; and the impact of infections on individuals and infants. It was added that the previously viewed 6 th grade Bill Nye video also differentiates between HIV and AIDS Brooke Maylath, Transgender Alliance Group, commented that the overarching theme of the video was fearmongering, fear of STIs, fear of intimacy, fear of dying of AIDS, and that the focus should be on staying healthy and healthy activities Presentation and Discussion related to orientation and overview of current 8 th grade SHARE video titled, Teen Contraception The Committee viewed the current 8 th grade SHARE video entitled, Teen Contraception. The video is designed to dispel common myths about contraception and describes the full range of contraception options available, including abstinence. The committee discussed the positives of the video, to include: discussion about responsibility being with both sexes; and a lot of focus on female contraceptives thus empowering females. Concerns with the video were also discussed to include: lack of discussion on IUD, Plan B and more current forms of birth control; needs accurate and inclusive representations of anatomy; and does not address the fact condoms can be obtained free from health clinics versus buying them. Brooke Walker, Community Health Alliance, provided clarification on LARC (Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives) Presentation and Discussion related to orientation and overview of current 9 th Grade SHARE video titled, Contraceptive Choices The Committee viewed the current 8 th grade SHARE video entitled, Contraceptive Choices. The video is designed to cover the range of birth control methods available today, including abstinence. The committee discussed the positives of the video, to include: the video was the most accurate of the videos the committee has viewed; it was straightforward and covered a wide range of options; included a discussion of polyurethane condoms and reinforced that condoms are the only STI protection; and provided a summary of options at the end. Concerns with the video were also discussed to include: contraception does not apply only to heterosexuals. 3

4 There was additional discussion related to douching as the video discussed it but the subject is not included in the SHARE curriculum. Additionally, it was added that, from a medical standpoint, douching is not considered a health option today. One member suggested that if the video discusses the subject of douching, both the positives and negatives should be introduced. Members of the committee felt the video should be shown earlier than the 9 th grade. Brooke Walker, Community Health Alliance, made comment that the video was too long, and provided some inaccurate and potentially intimidating information. Samantha Fielder, Reno High student, commented that the pregnancy portion of the video is important and that many teens do not understand how pregnancy happens Presentation and Discussion related to orientation and overview of current 9 th grade SHARE video titled, Journey into Life: Human Reproduction 2.09 Presentation and Discussion related to orientation and overview of current 9 th grade SHARE video titled, Open Arms, Open Eyes: Power, Control & Abuse in Teen Relationships 2.10 Presentation and Discussion related to orientation and overview of current 9 th Grade SHARE video titled, Deadly Desires 3.
