In our working experience, we are continuously called to create new research projects and critically read the results of studies conducted by other colleagues. This course is addressed to those who want to acquire the essential tools to prepare a clinical study properly, and to those who wish to understand how to critically read scientific publications Introduction to the course Understanding key frequency measures: incidence, prevalence, relative risk, odds ratio Observational and experimental epidemiological studies, meta-analyses: pros and cons External validity of epidemiological studies: how they often hide pitfalls and ambiguities A critical reading of scientific publications: how everything and its opposite can be true Discussion and conclusions

3 COURSE 3: Organization models and cost management in HIV Coordinators: G. D Ettorre, S. Lo Caputo, G. Rizzardini As a result of structural reductions in regional budgets and the need to achieve increasingly challenging goals, Infectious Disease Units are getting more and more involved in general management issues, such as budget management, organization models and the new trends for improved resource management within the Unit, clinical practice guidelines and PDTs (clinical pathways), economic assessments and impact assessments based on real-life data. All these aspects are related to Clinical Governance, and should represent a practical tool for clinicians to optimize the management of healthcare system while improving the efficiency of resource allocation. The question is: what are the best tools to be applied in the field of Infectious Diseases? Objective of the short course The objective of this short course is to provide students with an overview and a background description of the healthcare system with regard to the application of Clinical Governance tools within Infectious Disease Units; attendants will become familiar with decision-making and healthcare management jargon through a diversified learning approach Introduction (front lecturing) Problem-Based Learning (PBL) sessions An area dedicated to the description of operational tools A first-hand account 3 Programme Clinical practice guidelines and PDTs: institutional pathways and operational applications Overview on guidelines: development and application criteria PDTs: the example of the Lombardy region or other region PDTs: their impact within the institutional context Clinical Governance: a management tool for clinicians Clinical Governance: definitions and description Clinical Governance and its control tools PBL exercise: application of Clinical Governance to the Infectious Diseases area
