1 CURRICULUM VITAE Nina Rafterman Derby Population Council Center for Biomedical Research 1230 York Avenue New York, NY Tel: PERSONAL DATA Born: November 22, 1978; New York, New York Citizenship: U.S.A. EDUCATION 2007 Doctor of Philosophy in Pathobiology University of Washington, Seattle, WA 2000 Bachelor of Arts degree in Biochemistry cum laude, high honors in biochemistry Smith College, Northampton, MA RESEARCH EXPERIENCE Senior Research Investigator (January 2012 present) Laboratory of Dr. Melissa Robbiani, Population Council Center for Biomedical Research, New York, NY - Evaluate the impact of poly(i:c) on dendritic cell (DC) and T cell biology and HIV/SIV infection in vitro and in vivo. - Oversee in vivo macaque studies of microbicide intravaginal rings and gels to prevent HIV infection - Supervise a research investigator and two research technicians and manage their projects (vaginal ring and gel microbicides, small molecule inhibitors of HIV, in vitro HSV-2 studies) - Increased leadership responsibility includes: greater role in intravaginal ring and gel microbicide study design, analysis, and manuscript preparation; assistance with grant writing; and presentation at meetings. Research Investigator (September 2008 December 2011) Laboratory of Dr. Melissa Robbiani, Population Council Center for Biomedical Research, New York, NY. - Investigated how poly(i:c) impacts DC biology and the implications for HIV infection of DCs and transmission to T cells using both in vitro and in vivo models. - Oversaw pre-clinical in vivo studies of microbicide intravaginal rings - Managed research technicians, contributed to grant writing, prepared manuscripts for microbicide studies, and presented at meetings. Postdoctoral Fellow (September 2007 August 2008) Laboratory of Dr. Melissa Robbiani, Population Council Center for Biomedical Research, New York, NY. - Studied how TLR ligation affects dendritic cell biology with implications for HIV infection of DCs and transmission of the virus from DCs to T cells. Investigated the mechanism by which the TLR3 ligand poly(i:c) blocked HIV replication, specifically the role of type-i IFNs and the innate intracellular HIV resistance factor, APOBEC3G. Postdoctoral Fellow (June 2007 September 2007) Laboratory of Dr. Julie Overbaugh, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, WA. - Helped complete a study on a cohort of HIV positive female sex workers investigating how the neutralizing antibody response to HIV infection impacts the susceptibility to re-infection with a different HIV strain. This study has significant implications for the potential success or failure of antibody-based HIV vaccines. Page 1 of 5
2 Predoctoral Student ( ). Laboratory of Dr. Leonidas Stamatatos, Seattle Biomedical Research Institute, Seattle, WA. - Characterized antibody responses elicited in animals immunized with HIV Envelope (Env) proteins. Investigated how broadly reactive neutralizing antibodies develop in a macaque model of HIV infection. Research objectives included the preparation and characterization of Env proteins; design of assays to characterize the epitope specificity of antibodies in immunized and infected macaques; generation and characterization of monoclonal antibodies in immunized mice; and examination of the ability of vaccine-elicited antibodies to protect macaques from virus challenge. Research Technician ( ). Laboratories of Dr. Rick Rogers and Dr. Maria Rupnick, Department of Environmental Health, Harvard School of Public Health, and Department of Surgical Research, Children s Hospital, Boston, MA. - Studied the role of vascular remodeling and angiogenesis in the regulation of adipose tissue growth in mice as a model for tumor growth using confocal and scanning electron microscopy. - Examined particle deposition in the lungs of neonatal, juvenile, and adult rats by aerosol exposure and confocal microscopy to understand whether neonates were more susceptible than adults to alveolar particle deposition. Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry Thesis ( ). Laboratory of Dr. Dany Adams, Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular and Cell Biology, Smith College, Northampton, MA. - Investigated the role of microtubules in cadherin-mediated cell-cell adhesion in embryonic zebrafish in vivo using microinjection, immunocytochemistry, and confocal microscopy.
