NOVEMBER 2018 NEWS LETTER From the Chair: First Notice of Intention It is that time of the year when the Club is obliged to announce its intention to hold its Annual General Meeting. As boring as these meetings are the local Cape Town members are requested to please try and come to support their Club. The 8 th AGM of the CBC will be held on Saturday 16 th February 2019 at the Dutch Reformed Church in Briza, Somerset West 10h00 sharp. Any member who wishes to propose an item for the Agenda should do so in writing and submit it to info@capebullmastiffclub.co.za before the 31 st January The Agenda will be distributed directly after final compilation and only items on the Agenda will be discussed. There will be no voting at this AGM as the present officials have a mandate for their duties until the AGM There are, however, vacant places on the Committee should anyone wish to volunteer. The annual trophies will be handed out to the recipients and refreshments will be available. Members are reminded that the 2019 membership fees are due prior to the AGM. The fee of R120 per annum still stands and the bank details are as follows: First National Bank, Strand Branch code Account #
THE ANNUAL TROPHY SPECIALITY SHOW Some of the trophies that are available The Annual Trophy Show will, once again, be held at Zimzala Canine Estate situated on the R44 with Judge Liz Raubenheimer in attendance. Liz is a KUSA level 6 All Breeds Judge and eminently suitable to judge the Bullmastiff. The sponsors are Canine Ultimate Nutrition and there will be two fun classes: namely Camper class and Visitors class. The Camper class is for any Bullmastiff that would be ineligible for BOB / BISS due to an irregularity of sorts e.g.: crank tail / mis-markings. The visitors class is for any other KUSA registered breed of dog e.g.: anything from a German Shepherd Dog to a Jack Russell. Only one exhibit per person and the Judging will be done after the BISS and the challenges. Entries for this class will be free. Come and enjoy the day with your colleagues and dogs
All members that have trophies please, if not done so already, get your trophies engraved before the seasonal holidays and returned to the CBC Secretary before year end. ************* KUSA SHOW SCHEDULE
Part two: THE ITCH THAT WON T STOP Dr Zambeli DRUG THERAPY Without going into too much detail, here are the PROVEN effective treatments: * Corticosteroids suppress the immune system, rapid itch relief, better for CAD than CFA. Many side effects, especially with long term and high dose therapy. Rather a low dose, with few mild side effects and the occasional scratch than high doses just to achieve no itching at all. AVOID with diabetes, liver or kidney disease or if infection or mange are possible present. * Antihistamines generally disappointing (3-30% efficiency). Useful for flare ups of seasonal CAD. Avoid with heart or kidney disease. * Omega 3 Fatty Acids (w3fa s) long term usage has been shown to have good antiitching and cortisone sparring effects. Best for FAD & CAD, can be used alongside desensitization. Few side effects (smelly fish breath and diarrhoea if dosed excessively) but costly. * Avoid Vitamin A/D capsules which can cause serious joint and liver disease in dogs as they are normally dosed for humans. Primrose, starflower, marine fish and flax weed oils and powders are fine, salmon oils can contain high levels of vitamin A/D. OTHER TREATMENTS Emollient shampoos shampoos containing wheat germ may soothe inflamed skin, and aid control of flare ups which predispose your dog to a secondary bacterial dermatitis. Antifungal shampoos skin yeast like Malasezzia can exacerbate or complicate an inflamed skin, even if it s not infected by bacteria (yet!) Frequent (2-8 times per month) washing with an antifungal shampoo can sometimes help keep a lid on the yeast. Yeast dermatitis makes your dog smell particularly doggy but then so do bacterial infections. Sunlight on irritated skin (whatever the cause) generally worsens the dermatitis, so avoid the hot hours of 11h00 to 15h00. Sunscreen is of limited value in dogs unless you have an atopic Chinese Crested or Mexican Hairless. Avoidance is preferable. Chlorine in swimming pools can exacerbate this, and bacteria love moisture. If your vet instructs you to add soothing or antibacterial/antifungal shampoos towel dry your dog well after bath or shampoo. If you must use a dryer, don t use hot air and don t dry the skin completely this can promote inflammation.
QUICK OVERVIEW FAD Flea Allergic dermatitis Allergy to flea saliva which the flea injects subcutaneously to prevent blood from clotting this binds to skin proteins and causes a reaction long after the flea is gone. CAD Canine Atopic Dermatitis (dog hay fever) This is an allergy to an environmental protein (weed, flower, or tree pollen, house dust mite faeces etc.) Humans with allergies get asthma, eczema, sneezing and conjunctivitis. Dogs manifest differently. CFA Canine Food Allergy This is immune -system hypersensitivity with anti-bodies against a foreign food protein. The most common dietary allergens in dogs are beef, dairy and wheat products (80% of allergens). Others implicated are chicken, fish and pork. While most CFA present with diarrhoea, as many as 40-50% of patients suffer from recurrent otitis externa. Vomition, anal furunculosis (especially in GSD) bacterial skin infections and very rarely, respiratory or neurological disease, are other manifestations. Merely having diarrhoea after eating a meal does not equal CFA! Many foodstuffs contain chemicals or molecules which individual animals may be unable to digest. No antibodies are involved just a chemical process. The most important concept is the itch threshold. It does not matter how many or what sort of allergies your dog has if you control just one or more of them to the point where your dog will itch- all the symptoms stop. Since fleas, bacteria, UV radiation and mites are the most common complicating factors, just controlling them may help. Cortisone raises the itch barrier it does not lower the actual allergies so it may allow additional diseases to develop under this barrier until they explode above it and then you have a much bigger problem! Dr Anthony Zambeli can be contacted at ant@inandavets.com ********** Comments from our fanciers over the last few months Fantastic, thanks for your continuous positive contribution Johan Smith Thank you for an interesting Newsletter Doreen Powell CBC President
