1 THE BENT TWIG A monthly newsletter of the American Bonsai Association of Sacramento October 2018 Tuesday October 23, ABAS Welcomes Jonas Dupuich Evaluating Bonsai Jonas will guide us through a repeatable process for evaluating bonsai critically. This program features an overview of the topic, a slideshow, and group and individual exercises designed to sharpen evaluation skills using member trees and/or trees provided for the program. This event will be good for all skill levels. Jonas has presented at previous ABAS Meetings and was our Show Headliner in This promises to be an educational meeting for everyone. Renee will be doing the Pre-Meeting Study Group (6:00pm) which will feature Fall Tree Care and styling and other advice on member trees. Please bring in your trees that you might have design questions, fall care questions or need a few suggestions to take them to a better place. The more trees we have to work with, the more we can all learn.

2 John has promised some special trees and related items for our raffle. Thank you, John. Renee will bring in one of her wonderful trees for the Formal Tree Display segment of our meeting. For Show & Tell bring in your fall color, any tree obtained from or worked on by Jonas and anything else you have that looks great right now. At our last meeting Tuesday September 25 ABAS featured Jennifer Price for her first visit to Sacramento. She hosted the Pre-Meeting session with what she calls Bonsai Inspiration where she quickly looks over trees brought in and suggests styling, pot selection and various other tips to make your tree even better. This was a lively session and many members brought in trees for the discussion. For the regular meeting, Jennifer evaluated and worked on a very nice collected (Yamadori) Sierra Juniper (collected by Phong, thank you!) which was raffled at the end of the Meeting. Kathleen was the lucky winner. The picture shows a plastic bag over a large branch on the top of the tree. The branch was left on to assure there is enough foliage to carry the tree through winter and will be removed in the future. The bag theoretically removes the branch so we can see the future design better. I know it looks funny in the picture but we need to know this technique when doing heavy handed styling. Phong also helped us with the Formal Tree Display with a beautiful Black Pine. Here are a few pictures of the evening.

This is a great opportunity to develop wiring skills and work with a fantastic teacher! Details are as follows: Renee's House, 900am - 4:00pm, Cost - $75 each. Donuts, coffee, and snacks will be provided, please bring your own lunch. Materials: bring tree, tools, turntable, etc.; we will use club wire for wiring projects.

4 We are sad to announce the passing of long time Member Don Casselman Many of you will fondly recall Don and Barbara's generosity. Twice they hosted our Annual Home Tour, most recently Comprehensive Pine Workshop Eight lucky club members will have the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive Black Pine Workshop including multiple sessions AND a quality pine to work on and keep forever. ABAS Member Phong Nguyen will be providing the trees and conducting the workshop at his literal Bonsai Garden Home in Elk Grove. Each participant will have a choice of material, some have had preliminary styling, others are untouched raw material. The cost will be $120 for raw material and $130 for trees that have had preliminary styling. This includes the tree plus 3-4 workshops; the first workshop will be Sunday, December 9, 2018 (preparing trees and initial styling), followed by workshops in February 2019 (repotting), June 2019 (decandeling), and an additional workshop if needed. A signup sheet will be at the October Meeting. Spring Bus Tour Dodie Newman has volunteered to chair the committee for our Spring Bus Tour. She is actively seeking potential destinations members would like to visit. We had a great time last year trekking through the East Bay and I for one am looking forward to visiting some new and different places this year. 5 Club Finances and Objectives Our current financial state for the club is good thanks to great participation from our members in fundraising events, raffles and sales. Our Membership is nearly 100 which we haven t seen for a long time. With the additional funds, the Board has elected to enhance the quality of our Monthly Raffles, elevate the quality of our Guest and Member Demo Trees and look to enlist more Expert Speakers at our meetings for the 2019 year. These items were selected with the idea everyone benefits and everyone has a chance to win the raffles. So enjoy the fruits of our good fortune by attending our Monthly Meetings. We need your help at the GSBF Convention October 24-28, 2018 McClellan Conference Center, Sacramento This year John (Prizes) and Sylvia (Staffing) with help from ABAS membership are in charge of the Raffle operation for the convention. Please contact Sylvia if you would like to volunteer to help at the sales table. Entrance to the convention the day of your service is included for volunteers. The Convention is a large scale endeavor for the GSBF and local Clubs to the Convention site. Many volunteers are needed to staff the wide range of activities such as security, raffle tables and door monitors. Please contact Renee if you can spare a few hours over the course of the Convention to help out. At the Convention there is a Bonsai Display (Show) for all to enjoy. This is not the competitive display. If you have a tree you would like to show, contact Renee with pictures and a brief description. Holiday Party Chairperson Needed The club could use some help organizing the Holiday party on December 20 th. This event is pretty well planned and the usual suspects are in line to pull off their respective pieces of the party. We d like to ask someone to step up and pull it all together and maybe add a new twist to the festive occasion. Contact Renee if you can help out. Club Refreshment Chair The Board feels we could use a Meeting Refreshment Chairperson to help coordinate refreshments at our monthly meetings. This would involve getting a sign-up sheet going and helping to set up the snack table before the meetings. If anyone is interested in taking this on for the Club, see Renee at the October Meeting. Garden Center Japanese Garden Maintenance The Board has volunteered ABAS to clean up and maintain the Japanese Garden in the Garden Center Courtyard. In turn John has stepped up to lead this project. To that end, we have scheduled a workday Saturday November 3 rd, 9:00-12:00 for cleanup and pruning. If you can make time to help John, our Club and the Garden Center would really appreciate it. Please bring pruning and clean up tools along with yourself.
