There are a rage of warig sigs ad symptoms that idicate mild to severe allergic reactios (aaphylaxis) ad immediate respose is ecessary. Allergic reactios do ot always lead to aaphylaxis but we eed to keep a close eye o those who may be at risk. Page 1

Iformatio There are a rage of people who ca help whe someoe has a allergic reactio. Our school has a Policy Maagemet Pla to help those with allergies. Adrealie (epiephrie) give usig a autoijector (such as a EpiPe ) ito the outer mid-thigh muscle is the most effective first aid treatmet for aaphylaxis. Everyoe eeds to cotribute to their ow health ad persoal safety. 3 Iformatio Allergy ad Aaphylaxis Basics for teachers What are allergies? Allergies occur whe the immue system produces atibodies agaist substaces i the eviromet (allerges) that are usually harmless. A food allergy is a immue system respose to a food protei that the body mistakely believes is harmful. Whe the idividual eats food cotaiig that protei, the immue system releases massive amouts of chemicals, triggerig symptoms that ca affect a perso s breathig, gastroitestial tract, ski ad/or heart. It is estimated that up to 2% of Australia adults ad 1 i 10 ifats aged 12 moths*, have food allergy ad some of them will experiece a life-threateig allergic reactio (aaphylaxis). Approximately 10 people die from aaphylactic reactios each year i Australia. What are the symptoms of allergies ad aaphylaxis? The symptoms of a mild to moderate allergic reactio ca iclude: Tiglig i the mouth Swellig of the lips, face ad eyes Hives or welts Abdomial pai ad/or vomitig (These are sigs of a severe allergic reactio to isects) Symptoms of aaphylaxis a severe allergic reactio ca iclude: Difficulty breathig or oisy breathig Swellig of the togue Swellig/tightess i the throat Difficulty talkig ad/or a hoarse voice Wheezig or persistet coughig Persistet dizziess ad/or collapse Youg childre may appear pale ad floppy *Osboure et al. Prevalece of challege prove IgE-mediated food allergy usig populatio based samplig ad predetermied challege criteria i ifats. J Allergy Cli Immuolol 2011: 127: Page 3

Iformatio A severe allergic reactio usually occurs withi 20 miutes to 2 hours of exposure to the trigger ad if left utreated, ca be fatal. Eatig a small amout of food ca trigger aaphylaxis ad playig with toys or touchig hads that have bee cotamiated by the food may cause a mild to moderate allergic reactio. What are the mai causes? There are ie foods that accout for 90% of allergic reactios: peauts, tree uts (waluts, almods, cashews, pistachios, pecas etc.) fish, shellfish, eggs, cow s milk, sesame, soy ad wheat.) The other 10% are triggered by foods such as kiwi fruit, baaa, chicke, mustard ad celery. Peauts are the leadig cause of fatal food iduced aaphylactic reactios. Curretly, there is o cure for food allergy. Avoidace of the food is the oly way to prevet a reactio. Other allergy triggers iclude isect stigs, (particularly bee stigs), medicatios, latex Why is it importat to kow about aaphylaxis? Avoidace of kow allerges is crucial i the maagemet of aaphylaxis. Schools eed to work with parets/ guardias ad childre to miimise a child s exposure to kow allerges ad reduce stigma, bullyig ad teasig that may result for some childre. Kowledge of severe allergies will assist staff ad studets to better uderstad how to help childre who are at risk of aaphylaxis. How ca aaphylaxis be treated? Adrealie (epiephrie) give as a ijectio usig a autoijector (such as a EpiPe ) ito the outer mid-thigh muscle is the most effective first aid treatmet for aaphylaxis. Adrealie (epiephrie) autoijectors are desiged so that ayoe ca use them i a emergecy. Parets/guardias should provide schools with a adrealie (epiephrie) auto ijector ad ASCIA Actio Pla for their child, which should be stored ulocked ad easily accessible to staff. If a child is treated with a adrealie (epiephrie) autoijector, a ambulace must be called immediately to take the child to a hospital. Page 4

Iformatio How ca aaphylaxis be preveted? The key to the prevetio of aaphylaxis is: kowledge of childre who are at risk, awareess of kow allerges, ad avoidace of exposure to kow allerges Some childre wear a medical warig bracelet to idicate allergies. Privacy cosideratios It is importat to be aware that some parets/guardias may ot wish their child s idetity be disclosed to the wider school commuity, this may also apply to the studet themselves. It is recommeded that this be discussed with the studet s parets/guardias ad writte coset obtaied to display the studet s ame, photograph ad relevat treatmet details i staff areas, catees ad/or other commo areas. Studets complete the before colum of Activity sheet 1.1 What I kow about allergies quiz either idividually or with a parter ad the after colum at the completio of the module. Clarify terms such as Epipe ad aaphylaxis. Discuss the aswers. The aswer to all statemets is True. Mark ad tally scores ad create a class tally. Thigs that most ofte cause allergie Year: Date: Dot kow I groups studets draw a Y chart titled Thigs that most ofte cause allergies o butcher s paper with the categories Causes allergies, Does t cause allergies ad Do t kow labelled. Cause allergies Does t cause allergies Usig the cut up items from Activity sheet 1.2 Thigs that most ofte cause allergies, studets place each item ito the category they cosider to be most appropriate i their Y chart. Ecourage studets to discuss their reasoig before makig their classificatio. Clarify ay items i the Do t kow category ad ay other miscoceptios (pumpki, Brussels sprouts ad rice do ot cause the most allergic reactios all other items do cause the most allergic reactios.) Page 6

Activity 1 Ask Were there ay items that were i the Causes allergies sectio that surprised you? If so, why? Do you kow ayoe who is allergic to ay of these items? What do you thik this perso eeds to tell his/her frieds so he/she ca stay safer? How do you thik a perso might feel about havig allergies? (scared, uhappy, left out, OK, special). What is some positive self-talk a perso with a allergy ca use to make him/her feel better about their allergies? ( everyoe is differet ; I kow how to stay safe aroud these foods/items ; there is o eed to be scared or uhappy, I just eed to be careful ; I am lucky to have good frieds who will help me stay safe aroud these foods/items ; I ca get other treats istead of food treats ; I get lots of extra love ad care from my family my allergy does t stop me doig lots of fu thigs.) What are some thigs you could do to keep a perso with a allergy safer? (remid them about their allergy ad ot to take food or these items from other studets; try to eat food that does ot cotai the allergy food whe you are with them; make sure you wash your hads before ad after eatig; stick up for them if ayoe is teasig them about ot beig able to eat certai foods or touch certai items; ever try to trick them ito eatig food they are allergic to; tell the teacher if they look differet or say they feel sick.) Why is it importat for a perso with a allergy to tell a adult as soo as they feel differet to ormal e.g. feel sick, get itchy, get a rash, have swolle eyes or lips, have a tiglig togue)? (because this may mea they have come i cotact with the thig they are allergic to ad their quick actio could help save their life.) What do you thik this perso s frieds ca do whe they see that he/she looks differet to ormal? (tell them to stay calm, get someoe to stay with them ad get a adult straight away.) What did you lear about allergies by doig this activity? Page 7

Activity 1 Why do you thik we are learig about allergies? (because kowig what thigs cause allergies ca help those who have a allergy avoid these thigs ad help others kow what to avoid eatig or usig aroud people with allergies. There is o cure for allergies. Avoidace is the oly way to prevet a reactio.) Studets write a summary of this discussio i their ow words ad complete the after colum of the quiz. Remark ad tally scores ad compare class tallies with the before scores. Graph results. At Home Activity: Studets desig the frot of a postcard titled Uderstadig allergies helps me ad others stay healthy, happy ad safe to visually iform their family of the thigs that most ofte cause a allergic reactio. O the back of the postcard studets write what they have leart from this activity. (Studets may refer to their correct quiz iformatio.) Sed Paret Iformatio sheet 1 Beig allergy aware home with studets ow ad a iformatio letter to parets if there are ay studets i your class with kow allergies (see page 11 for sample). 11 Paret Sheet 1 Paret Iformatio Beig allergy aware Dear family We are coductig a allergy awareess program i our classroom as part of our school health educatio program. Here are some facts to help you discuss allergy safety with your child ad some tips o what you eed to do to help your child at school if he/she has a kow risk of aaphylaxis. What are allergies? A allergy is whe the immue system reacts to substaces (allerges) i the eviromet which are usually harmless (e.g. food proteis, polle, dust mites, latex). What is aaphylaxis? Aaphylaxis is a severe allergic reactio that is potetially life threateig. What causes aaphylaxis? Aaphylaxis is commoly caused by food allergies. Ay food ca cause a allergic reactio, however ie foods cause 90% of reactios i Australia, these are: Peauts Tree uts (e.g. hazeluts, cashews, almods) Egg Cow s milk Wheat Soy Fish Shellfish Sesame. Page 11

Paret Sheet 1 Other causes of aaphylaxis iclude: Isect stigs ad bites Medicatios Latex. Exercise What are the sigs ad symptoms? Mild to moderate allergic reactio Swellig of lips, face, eyes Hives or welts Tiglig mouth Abdomial pai, vomitig (these are sigs of a severe allergic reactio to isects). Aaphylaxis (Severe Allergic Reactio) Difficult/oisy breathig Swellig of togue Swellig/tightess i throat Difficulty talkig ad/or hoarse voice Wheeze or persistet cough Persistet dizziess or collapse Pale ad floppy (youg childre). How ca aaphylaxis be preveted? There is o cure for food allergy. The key to the prevetio of aaphylaxis is: Kowledge of childre who are at risk, Awareess of kow allerges, ad Prevetio of exposure to these allerges. Page 12

Paret Sheet 1 How ca aaphylaxis be treated? Adrealie (epiephrie) give as a ijectio usig a auto ijector (such as a EpiPe ) ito the outer mid-thigh muscle is the first aid treatmet for aaphylaxis. What ca you do if your child is at risk of aaphylaxis? Iform staff of your child s allergies ad discuss risk miimisatio strategies Work with staff to complete a Idividual Aaphylaxis Health Care Pla Provide the school with a copy of your child s ASCIA Actio Pla that has bee completed by a doctor ad has a up-to-date photograph Supply your child s adrealie (epiephrie) auto ijector ad esure it has ot expired. What ca you do to help your child support a classmate who is at risk of aaphylaxis? Talk to you child about ot sharig food with other childre Talk to your child about washig hads before ad after eatig Talk to your child about the sigs ad symptoms of aaphylaxis ad the importace of gettig a adult s help if they see ayoe with these symptoms. How does someoe with self-respect keep themselves safe at school if they are allergic to bees? (tells their frieds about their bee allergy ad what their early warig sigs ad symptoms are; does t leave drik cotaiers uatteded ad wears shoes whe outside, makes sure the school has their curret Idividual Aaphylaxis Health Care Pla; tells a adult immediately if they are bitte by a bee.) Give me some examples of bullyig. (e.g. ame callig; always leavig someoe out of a game; usig the phoe or computer i a asty way; embarrassig someoe because they are differet; forcig someoe to do somethig they do t wat to; physically hurtig someoe; hidig or breakig someoe s possessios.) How do you thik someoe who is beig bullied might feel? (highlight feeligs such as ager, fear, helplessess, worry, ervousess, sadess.) Is it a perso s fault if they are bullied? (o, it is always the perso who bullies fault.) Why do some people get picked o more tha others? (they may appear ervous so other childre thik they are easy to boss aroud; they may appear differet or be differet i some way but this is ot a excuse to bully someoe; they may ot stad up for themselves whe they have bee teased i the past.) (they stad tall, they look people i the eye, they talk with a loud voice i a friedly way, they do t use a baby or silly voice, ad they do t igore it if someoe is mea to them.) Why do you thik actig cofidetly ca protect you from beig bullied? (you look like you have self-respect ad might stad up for yourself if you are bullied so someoe is less likely to be mea to you.) Why is askig a teacher for help what someoe with self-respect would do if they could t stop someoe from bullyig them? (askig for support meas you value ad care for yourself ad wat to keep safe. Askig for help is ot dobbig or gettig someoe ito trouble.) How do you thik someoe with allergies might feel? (highlight feeligs such as fear, helplessess, worry, ervousess, sadess.) Page 15

Activity 2 How do you thik they might look if they are exposed to somethig that they are allergic to? (might vomit, have swolle face ad lips; have red ad itchy ski; be coughig ad seezig; have watery eyes; be breathig fuy.) Is it a perso s fault if they have allergies? (o, it is just somethig their immue system does whe they eat certai foods or get exposed to certai thigs. They ca t help it.) Explai that it is importat to be cofidet ad thik for yourself. This helps protect us from beig bullied ad it also gives us the stregth to help someoe else who is beig bullied. Put Activity sheet 2.1 We ca stay safe o the iteractive whiteboard. Revise the five steps to help someoe who is beig bullied ad to use whe beig bullied. Ask studets for examples of the commets that they could make i steps 1 to 3. Explai that if they ca t help someoe who is beig bullied or stop someoe bullyig them, by followig the first four steps, the the last step: Ask a teacher for help is a rule they must follow at school. Discuss other appropriate adults i the school they could get help from if they could ot fid their class teacher or duty teacher. Studets work i groups of three to decide what each character o the activity sheet could do or say. Role-play the respose to each sceario usig figer puppets at the frot of the class. Page 16

Activity 2.1 We ca stay safe What you could do if you saw someoe beig bullied? 1. Show this perso you kow it s ufair 2. Show the perso who is bullyig that you kow it s ufair 3. Tell the perso who is bullyig to stop 4. Move away together with the perso beig bullied 5. Ask a teacher for help What you could do if you were beig bullied? 1. Igore them 2. Move away 3. Ask them to stop i a friedly voice 4. Stare ad ask them to stop i a strog voice 5. Ask a teacher for help ❶ ❷ ❸ ❹ Saji brigs samosas ad other Idia food to school each day for luch. For the last two weeks some boys have bee teasig him about his luch ad askig him why he ca t eat ormal food. This is makig him feel agry. What could Saji do ad say to stop the bullyig? This makes him feel sad. What could Tom do or say to stop the bullyig? Page 17

Activity 3 ❺ What could Tom s frieds do or say to stop the bullyig? Kate is allergic to latex. At swimmig lessos she accidetly touched her fried s swimmig cap ad her eyes got watery ad her face ad lips got puffy. Some of the girls i her lesso were laughig ad poitig at her mild allergy symptoms. What could Kate do or say to stay safe ow i this situatio? What could Kate do or say so this bullyig does ot happe agai? SORTING OUT ACTIVITY 3 Recogisig ad respodig to situatios ivolvig allerges Preparatio Activity sheet 3.1 Risky situatios? - photocopy oe per group Activity sheet 3.2 What does beig a MATE mea? photocopy ad elarge ad display i classroom ad i catee areas Scissors, glue Access to computers A autoijector traiig device (such as a EpiPe ) Teachig tips Everyday Cool with Food Allergies by Michael Pistier (available for purchase at (Uder Childres Books) focuses o a group of kids with food allergies called the No Big Deal Buch ad the rage of self-maagemet strategies they use to maage their allergies ad stay safe. A shared readig of this book would complemet this Sortig Out activity Explai that may differet thigs ifluece what we eat, some i a positive way, some i a egative way ad that eatig a healthy diet is ofte ot just about us havig the willpower to eat healthy food but it s also got a lot to do with maagig all these differet iflueces. Coduct a thik pair share where studets tell their parter about a time: - they have eate somethig because their frieds were eatig it e.g. a pizza at a football wid-up Page 18

Activity 3 - they have eate somethig because their Mum or family member put it o their plate or i their luch box - they have eate somethig for a special occasio e.g. Birthday cake, Easter eggs, Matzo ball soup - they have eate somethig because they saw it advertised o TV e.g. fast foods, cofectioary - they have eate somethig for a treat or a reward - they have eate somethig from the catee because it was all they could buy with the moey they had - they had eate somethig because it was the food of their culture or someoe else s culture e.g. sprig rolls, samosas, lassis - they have eate somethig just because it was available e.g. it was o the kitche bech, it was i seaso, at the catee - they have ot eate somethig because their frieds were allergic to it. - they have ot eate somethig because they were allergic to it. Hear several resposes after each statemet ad stress that a rage of factors affect eatig habits, icludig family ad peers, the media, special occasios, cost, cultural backgroud, availability ad food allergies. Explai that we all eed to make decisios about the food we eat to stay healthy. For example: I have decided to oly eat special treat foods occasioally because if I ate them every day I may become uhealthy because special treats foods are ofte high i fat or sugar. If I had a allergy to peauts I would decide to ot eat foods cotaiig peauts because if I did I might have a severe allergic reactio ad be very sick. Explai that some decisios about the foods we eat have more serious cosequeces tha others. For example: If I decided to eat just oe more special treat like a piece of chocolate cake, the cosequeces of this decisio would ot very big; maybe I would just feel a bit full. If I was allergic to peauts ad decided to eat just oe mouthful of a peaut butter sadwich, the cosequeces of this decisio would be very big; I would have a severe allergic reactio. My togue would swell up ad I would have trouble talkig ad breathig ad I might collapse ad a adult would have to give me my adrealie (epiephrie) autoijector i my thigh to make me feel better agai ad the call a ambulace. Stress that allergic reactios do ot always lead to aaphylaxis but that we eed to keep a close eye o those who may be at risk. Page 19

Activity 3 Show the auto ijector traier device ad explai that oly adults use this to help studets or visitors to the school who may have a severe allergic reactio. Explai that people with allergies ca help keep themselves safe by recogisig safe ad usafe situatios ad that other people ca help those with allergies feel safe, strog ad supported by also beig able to recogise safe ad usafe situatios aroud allerges (or the thigs that cause their allergies). Read each of the situatios o Activity sheet 3.1 Risky situatios? to studets. After discussig each situatio i their group, studets cut ad paste it uder the appropriate headig o a safe - usafe group T chart. Discuss reasos why each situatio is safe or usafe as a class. SAFE No 2 washig hads before ad after eatig aroud someoe with a tree ut allergy or ay food allergy reduces their risk of comig ito cotact with this food. UNSAFE No 1 ot tellig your frieds is usafe because they ca help you avoid peauts by ot eatig foods with them i whe they are aroud you. No 4 tellig your fried about your party gives your fried s family time to prepare food that is safe for them ad reduces the risk of them beig tempted to eat food that is ot safe for them at your party. No 5 tellig a adult as soo as you see the early warig sig of a allergy is the safest thig to do. Your fried may be allergic to eggs ad may have got a small amout of egg from the cartos o his/her ski. No 6 wearig shoes if you are allergic to bees reduces your chaces of treadig o a bee. Avoidace is the best prevetio of ay allergy. No 9 gettig a adult to help immediately is the safest thig whe you kow your frieds may have bee exposed to allerges. Do t wait for the early warig sigs ad symptoms of a allergy to appear. No 3 ever force ayoe to eat food they may be allergic to, eve a sip or a small mouthful, because this may be eough to cause a allergic reactio No 7 sharig someoe s drik bottle if you are allergic to a food is usafe because the perso may have just eate the food you are allergic to ad a small amout may be i their saliva o their drik bottle. This small amout may be eough to cause a allergic reactio. No 8 sharig food with frieds who have food allergies is usafe. Fidig out if food is safe for them is tricky, eve whe foods have igrediet labels. It s safer just ot to share. No 10 a out-of-date Epipe is usafe. Remid your teacher to check your Epipe oce a term to make sure it has ot expired Page 20

Activity 3 Ask or use Thik, Pair, Share If you saw someoe doig each of the usafe thigs what could you do or say? (cosider each situatio separately) How do you thik you d feel if you just igored the problem? What helpful thikig would you eed to have i your head to be able to do this i real life? Do you thik it would be scary to ask or do this safer thig i real life? Would it be easier or harder to ask or do this safer thig if you had your frieds aroud? Why? Would it be easier or harder to ask or do this safer thig if you had a teacher or trusted adult aroud? Why?
